Oh my goodness! I just bought your book on pediatric PT documentation and now I've found your CZcams channel! I'm an SPT right now working in a school based clinical experience and your book and videos have been so helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom!

Oh Ariel, this comment brings SO MUCH JOY to my heart. I am so glad that they both have been helpful to you. Peds can be tough (I struggled so hard on my clinical because I had such a hard time with kiddo talk and resonating with them) but after a stint in ortho I fell back into peds and never left because it’s such a joy and so much fun. You’re already so far ahead of where I was and I’m SO PROUD OF YOU for looking for resources to make the most of your experience. Feel free to email if you need help finding anything lauren@girlsquadfit.com or info@drlaurenbaker.com (they both go to the same place I just run two websites 🙃). Thank you so so much for your comment.

Thank you so much for posting these videos! I am a physical therapist and have been working in inpatient rehab with adults for 5 years and am switching to the school system in the fall. There are limited videos with information on how to be a school based PT, so this is very helpful. I would love more videos on what school based physical therapists should know. Ex: equipment ( what things should PT know how to fix/adjust on wheelchairs, how to tie down WCs for transport, supportive chairs for sitting balance/standing frames)
I will probably use your 1 HR consultation at some point! Thank you!!

Melissa, you are so welcome! And I’m so glad you found this video helpful. School based PT is very different from inpatient rehab BUT it is it’s own kind of magical setting with a lot of flexibility, variety, and a whole bunch of nuances - I am absolutely here if you need me. To ease some of your concerns, tying down wheelchairs will mainly be the job of the bus driver, but it’s essentially a hook system with a seat belt (I have not personally tied any wheelchairs down on buses though always the school bus drivers job!). Equipment is always changing but you can often find PDFs of equipment on google by searching “xxx equipment name” + instruction manual ie “squiggles stander instruction manual” etc.

In total honesty, documentation will be the most new for you besides equipment and has the potential to be overwhelming at first. I wrote a book that includes school based prompts for evals, IEPs, and goals (along with soap notes etc) for PTs transitioning into school based practice. You can grab a paperback or get it free if you have a kindle unlimited subscription: amzn.to/3QgeNVM (that is my affiliate link ps or you can search “pediatric physical therapy documentation” and it will pop up.

As far as standers, most of the time a kid will have their own stander kept at school for the year to use, the school district will have a bunch of old ones, or you will have to “force/convince” the school district to buy one if a kid transfers into the school district with an IEP that has stander and either none are available or they aren’t appropriate. I say “force/convince” because most of the time it is a bit of both. The school district is legally obligated to provide the equipment but they are 2-5k each and often school districts don’t like spending that money if they don’t understand how it will benefit them long term. I can totally make a video on this - I think speaking about how to have successful equipment discussions with directors of sped could be very helpful! But honestly, this doesn’t happen every year so it’s not something I would worry about. Just keep my link and feel free to book something if it does come up!

As for my fav equipment: leckey standers, rifton activity chairs and pacer walkers, and easy stand (sit to stand stander) are probably my go tos. I will also say for preschool I did often have to write LMN for adaptive strollers (convaid is a common brand). There are other pieces of equipment you might use including gait belts, hi lo tables in bathrooms for changing, slide boards, hoyer lifts with an hygiene sling, and adaptive bathroom toilet chairs but you may be more familiar with those.

The other thing for equipment is often your SPED teachers will have some specific knowledge on equipment especially if they’re not new and the kiddos equipment is not new to them. They are usually awesome and more than happy to help you and teach. I’ve found most of the time if it’s a loose headrest they will simply fix it themselves and tell you they did if you ask. Also, asking if the school district works with a specific DME provider can be a great asset. I loved my people at
Olympic Pharmacy out in WA state. Nu Motion is a common DME provider nationwide

Hi Lauren, I am a PT with a background in the medical model of PT but have recently transitioned to school-based PT. Is there a way I could contact you to discuss some questions I have? Thank you
