    Hello! Thanks for these videos (SDI / R.S.; and, SBPT Evaluations) . I have a question as to why physical education which is a required subject for all students with disabilities was barely mentioned; maybe twice. If a student is experiencieng gross motor concerns (among other problems) within the school, the general physical education teacher should also be contacted to provide input as to how the student is meeting grade level expectations for the physical education curriculum. Typically, a lot of school administrators and special ed teachers do not really understand our roles with respect to PE and APE. We know that both areas frequently overlap however, we have specific roles and responsibilities. It would be terrific for PTs to encourage the IEP team to make sure that they understood "functional in the school environment" is significantly different than "meeting grade level expectations in the PE curriculum". PE and APE specialists utilize a variety of motor assessments including the TGMD -3. Most school Physical Therapy services are "schoo-based" (access to the total school environment) rather than medical/rehab models and in my 40 years experience most PTs at IEP meetings do not adequately explain that PT does not replace or can be substituted for physical education and/or Adapted PE (SDI) instruction. As many people watch your videos, it would be very helpful if you included PE/APE needs through licensed qualified PE teachers who are familiar with the PE curriculum. Please encourage including a PE observation in your evaluation steps. PE and APE specialists are a critical part of the special ed process. Thanks for listening. Dr. K. McPeak, CAPE.

      Hi Dr. K! Thank you so much for your thorough comment. I absolutely agree, while I try to include as much as humanly possible in all my videos, it isn't always as thorough as I want it to be or as it could be. I appreciate the comment that you left, so that everyone who watches this video can see how INCREDIBLY important general education PE teachers, APE (adaptive physical education) teachers, and all their support staff are. I absolutely agree, that every child who has any movement concerns, especially those who are in the process of being evaluated for school based PT have the APE/PE teacher included both in the assessment process (whether it is a conversation of concerns, observation, sharing of data, etc) as well as even having shared goals if appropriate with PT. I have not in my experience as a school based PT been in a situation where there was a conversation about PT and PE being interchangable or supplements for each other and I agree that would be incredibly inappropriate. I think they can work well together but are very different and should each have their own focus on an IEP if appropriate. I would love to share more information on APE/PE, if you could send me an email info@drlaurenbaker.com I would love to reach out when I start doing interviews again (if this is something you or any of your colleagues would be interested in). You are really passionate about PE/APE and I love sharing other disciplines especially those that are experts in their fields!

    Quick Question: Does school based PT require an MD order for treatments?

    • @DrLaurenBaker
      @DrLaurenBaker  Před 2 lety

      Hi Mercy, the answer would be based on state law. In NC we did have an MD sign yearly plan of cares back in 2016. In WA we did not require an MD to sign a plan of care or have an order. You can usually find that information from the department of instruction or the main governing body over the public education (they sometimes have different names). Is there a specific state your curious about?
