So it is OK to put baby in this position as part of learning to sit, my baby is like this baby, but I am afraid of that wobbling trunk, so this is a way to go? Thank you!

yes, so as long as baby is able to hold their head up to 90 degrees while on their tummy and has mastered rolling, this would absolutely be appropriate. I would not do this before a baby was 6 months, prior to six months I would work on rolling, tummy time, back and sidelying play. If a baby needs more assistance, you can more your hands up closer to under their armpits or mid trunk, hands on hips requires a little more control from the babies than hands on chest/under armpits.

Thank you! Yes, he can hold head at 90 when on tummy, no problem at all with that, but head is a little bit wobbling when I hold him in sitting and the trunk is vertical, he can lift his head, but his chin goes often to chest, I am not sure is it because of him wanting to look down or it is weak neck. But when on tummy head is 90 degree, so is wobbling head when vertical in sitting also normal, and head when on tummy is what it counts?

@@jednamalagaravaaaaaa for some reason this comment was held by youtube, and I didn't realize it. It sounds like there may also be some upper body weakness and possibly side neck weakness contributing to the "wobbliness" that you are seeing. If the baby is less than six months of age, I would make sure that the baby has everything they need in the Tummy Time / Learning to Roll free online course and if all checklists look good and they are over 5 months, to move onto the learning to sit course -- both are located here: drlaurenbaker.com/courses
That way you will be better able to determine if something is missing: specifically looking at whether a baby can hold tummy time for 10-15 minutes, pushing through elbows, and pushing through extended elbows to lift chest, rolling back to belly over left arm AND right arm, rolling belly to back over left arm AND right arm. If not quite mastering all of those would go back to focusing more on rolling and tummy time, sidelying play, and core strengthening before moving onto sitting. If over 9 months and not yet sitting on own or over six months and not rolling in either direction on own, would contact a local pediatric physical therapist.

Can you please add ages for these expectations?

    • @DrLaurenBaker

Hi Daelenepiampracha! thanks for your comment. Age expectations for sitting are 4-5 months for propped sitting (placing weight through arms to help sit with supervision) and 6-9 months for independent dynamic sitting (baby can sit unsupported without difficulty and reach in all directions to get toys). By 9 months we also want to see babies move from lying on their back to sitting up by themselves. To be honest though, 9 months is a little late if a baby is not really close to independent sitting and if they are struggling with sitting by 8 months I recommend reaching out to a pediatric PT for proactive interventions. I do have free courses here if you would like more strategic proactive play options: drlaurenbaker.com/courses (there is rolling, sitting, crawling, and walking!)
