This is the one time I look at the growing affection of a woman to a man in a harem anime and go. "Yeah, that's natural progression."
Yeah they handled this surprisingly well. I feel like relationships usually form pretty jarringly in aniem, but this was just... natural.

This is why Belle is popular. He's sincere, thoughtful, truly cares about the people around him. He isn't doing things to impress anyone or get into their pants, or get their attention or affection. He does good for the fact that it's good, not because he stands to gain anything. As far as his "crush" on Ais goes, it's more admiration and a desire to be on her level. He is loved because his motives and mindset are pure. Untainted by lust, greed, jealousy, or selfish intent. The man is a hero.

He does act selfish, but as in for the sake of someone, like so many times in the series people told him not to do something because it's dangerous for everybody, but he'll still go save that one girl. So I'd also argue it's mainly plot armor that he got so many girls, but I do like his kindness to everyone and the scenes he led us to see if you know what I mean.

Up until then it didn't feel like Bell's ideals were challenged all that much but that time he tarnished his own reputation(and his familia's too), put his friends and innocent people that had nothing to do with it at risk.
And there was the aspect of, yeah, the monsters may be acting nice but who's to say they'd actually never hurt anyone? Bell did not know for sure that what he was doing was right, so he had to either follow logic or his heart.
Bell repeatedly says he loves Ais. His skill flat out says it runs off him being in love. Don’t lie to people.

Ryu best girl of the series and this moment was like the best in the season. Bell showed a side of himself that yeah Ryu is a very powerful experience adventurer but also saw that she is more then just that. She is a beautiful elf woman.

- Eina Tulle's Mother: Fell in love with a farmer who took care of her when she got sick despite the harsh treatment received from her and Riveria.
- Elf from Hermes Familia: Fell in love with Bell after he saved her in the dungeon from a reinforced version monster. Got scared away by Ryuu when she tried to invite him on a date.
Basically not having pervert thoughts, be kind, pure, be hard worker and of course not be a hairy dwarf (they unreasonably hate them)
Fun Fact: Danmachi Elfs tend to have small breasts becouse of a veggies diet only and hate consuming meat and fish. Thats stated when Lefiya in her training in the dungeon note herself more tired and losing weight in dangerous levels, so she force herself into eating meat to compensate and Tiona screamed at her becouse her bust increased a lot in 1 month.

In the LN, all these scenes were written from her perspective and explaining her feelings in those moments. This is obviously a way for the reader to truly feel with her and see, that her love for him is genuine and not superficial and therefore it should be easy for each one to feel with and cheer for her.
Just started reading from Volume 1 once again. Obviously, Ryu is 100% the girl that Bell was looking for from the start - a beautiful elf, being saved by him in the dungeon, really nice person, helping him all the time and so on. She is the perfect match for Bell in every way. He is just not yet ready to fully understand it by now.
He might have deep affection, admiration and even a heavy crush on Ais, but a crush is not genuine love. And yes, she likes him very much, too. But in all the books I did not see a single hint of any romantic feelings on her side, besides being addicted to giving him lap pillows and cuddling his hair. But she would do the same to her little brother. After reading all of SO I do really like Ais and fully support their friendship "plus". But she does not seem to be waifu material at all. Just imagine being married to a woman with such devastatingly awful communication skills. There is no way that could work in reality! But of coure, Omori will decide in the end.
Btw. Ais might have been the trigger to develop his skill, but as I understand it that does not necessarily mean that his crush needs to last to use it. As long as he wholeheartedly strives to archive his goals (being a hero, saving the xenos, ...) that should be sufficient.
Why are people this delusional? It's outright spelled out that he loves Ais. It's not some "crush", it's love. The kanji for the skill's name literally translate as "being in love". Hestia and Freya spell it out, Bell himself makes it clear so many times, to think he doesn't actually love Ais is simply being willfully blind.

Yeah, sure Bell is "in love". Are you a great expert on this topic? As we all know, all 14 year old teenagers exactly understand everything about their own feelings and when they have feelings for someone it is the one and only true love but never just a crush. This 14 year old boy fell "in love" with a powerful mysterious beauty head over heels when she saved his life - a long time before they talked with each other for the first time. He blushes almost each time they talk und both are hardly able to say anything important for various reasons even after spending lots of time together for months. Even after 6 months Bell knows hardly anything about Aiz because she tells him almost nothing personal. And when Bell tried to have a real conversation with her on a difficult topic (Xenos) she did not want to listen to him and just felt like he suddendly is so far away...

Compared to that Ryu is so much closer to him from the start. Just consider her understanding reaction after he peeked on her on Level 18. He told her the truth and she trusted him right away, although she hardly knew him at that point. And then she even told him a lot about her dark past, giving him the chance to see who she really is. That's a foundation for a lasting relationship.

In volumen 18 Ryuu confess her love for Bell. But Bell remained silent not knowing what to answer, Ryuu then changed the subject saying she will join Hestia familia and wait for his answer. It is funny becouse Ryuu discovers that 99% of the girls have feelings for him including the goddess and all try to spite her advances towards him. Ryuu stated "If I didn't know you, I will thought you are the worst"

Dear god, why is the best relationship development I've seen in any anime in the last five years (at least) coming from a friggin' harem anime?! Just... how? It is a big shame that House Loki and House Hestia don't get more chances to be together, the dinamic is there specially with both Bell and Aiz trying to meet up despite their own God's restrictions.
I think it's a cultural thing, but I often find these sorts of scenes to be written from a weirdly immature place. Don't get me wrong, I like the sentiment, and I like that we get to see bonding between characters, but there are certain things that make it feel more... contrived for me. The reason I say this is that there is always this trope of nudity, and awkwardness, and "oh I'm not looking" but "I want to make excuses to be close to them" going on. And it is almost always written in a way that there are some aspects that just don't make sense because censorship requires the writer and animators to be 'safe', for example all our clothes are soaked, we are threatened by hypothermia, but we're still going to wear pants because we don't want to risk a higher rating for this one scene. I'm not saying they should 'lewd' the characters, I'm just saying there is a lot of pretense that goes into making these characters feel vulnerable when normally they can punch down steel walls, throw fireballs powerful enough to kill demigods, and survive 100 foot falls into raging subterranean rapids. I guess in a weird way, their physical/magical capabilities far exceed their emotional maturity, which feels a bit odd for people who literally risk their lives and lose comrades (experience death) in a dungeon environment.
I think part of the disconnect for me comes from the comedy that always seems to worm into the writing for these kinds of scenes, it's an old overdone trope. I feel like it would be more compelling to _have_ the characters 'look', to acknowledge each other as more than just their bodies, to show that their concern and feelings for one another overcomes a silly sense of shame and arousal, and accept that they can be nude in front of one another without it becoming a joke. "I'm shaking, it's cold... but more than that I want... I need you to hold me. I don't want to feel alone right now." Instead of something mature like that, something direct, we get this wishy-washy back and forth where they keep making excuses. Some more adult shows incorporate scenes like this with little dialogue, instead letting the characters actions and directness speak for itself, which I find to be more powerful scenes overall.
It's sort of a stirring pot of all the things that go into a "will they, won't they" stew designed more to titillate the audience than it is to expand the depth of the characters themselves. From my perspective, this is sort of a crutch for the writing to allow them to discuss feelings and develop intimacy, which could be done with a more mature tone rather than making excuses. It's fine for characters to not be emotionally mature enough to be direct with their feelings and communicate them well, but it is sort of weird when a life threatening situation is just an excuse to get the characters close together.
But this anime isn’t an “adult show”. Despite some of the scenes in the show, Danmachi is, by all intents and purposes, a show directed toward 15-20 year old males. If you are to hold this type of show to the same standards as an actual adult show, then do the same for kid shows. Not to mention, a lot of your so called “adult shows” have just as contrived dialogue that you probably don’t realize is there because you aren’t reading captions with the dialogue.
@@williamjaramillo5105 I mean, if you don't consider a 20 year old an adult, I am not really sure how to address that. But to your point of holding children's shows to an adult level, let's use Bluey as an example that handles it's content with emotional maturity.
For reference Bluey is a children's show targeted at 4 to 10 year olds, about a family of anthropomorphized dogs in Australia. The show mostly follows the titular character, a young girl dog, her younger sister and day to day activities with her family and school.
Bluey's content tackles issues like empathy, trust, learning to acknowledge others sense of self, being considerate of others (and your own) limitations, and patience and it approaches them with a level of emotional maturity that is extremely rare among shows directed at very young children. The children experience new situations and learn to make decisions and think about the consequences of their actions and how they might make others feel, and it does this in a charming and organic way that isn't just sing-song nonsense and slapstick routines. If we compare the level of complexity, the types of issues that are encountered and the developmental benefits of engaging with Bluey to say... any of the 3d Mickey Mouse cartoons targeted at the same age group, the difference is night and day. In that instance Mickey and friends are empty calories compared to the rich meal that is Bluey.
So when you say I should hold 'kids shows' to the same standard as 'adult shows', my point is that I do that already. I get exposed to a lot of different shows from my family and I watch anime with my niece and nephew. Not all shows handle things well, and as far as this scene goes it does the job of conveying how uncomfortable these two are with being direct and with nudity. I just find that it feels awkward to require this much "set up" for characters to develope a sense of intimacy, and a bit disappointing that they don't have the self confidence despite their obvious capabilities to express their feelings without these circumstance.
I'm not attacking danmachi, nor am I insulting the fan base. Though I think you might have taken my comment that way, since you are randomly attacking "adult shows" in general or my ability to read captions. I am just pointing out that it is very weird that this instance of intimacy, vulnerability and openness comes paired with a contrived set up and the often over used nudity tropes, which are a mix of 'this is awkward comedy' and 'will they won't they' titillation for the audience.
As you say, the show is directed at adolescent males, and it's a power-fantasy setting, so I'm not exactly expecting a complete shift of tone to adult behavior. I am just pointing out that it's sort of weird that these characters, who _are adults_ by the standards of their own world are so flustered by the concept of huddling to stay warm while their clothes dry. I mean, they engage in life or death fights every day, serious injuries, maiming and even the topic of murdering sentient creatures is touched on in the show, so it feels odd that all that violence doesn't register even a little bit toward the maturity level that should be present just because "boobies exist". The elf is literally not wearing any less than the belly dancer themed sword chick does on the regular.
Bear in mind, I'm a lot older than the target audience, and I grew up in a very rural area where it was not uncommon for lots of us (as kids) to go skinny dipping in the lake together, so nudity was never a big deal growing up. Anyone who got all pervy at such events was usually treated as a weirdo and shunned by the rest of the community at large. So like I said, it's probably a cultural thing, where they need these excuses to be naked without having the universe shatter due to the embarrassment of it all.
IIRC the scene was written during the writer's bad time (his girlfriend broke up with him and as a coping mechanism wrote whatever happened during this) so he definitely wasn't immature when writing this in the light novel.
Sadly this anime is not on that level~ i couldn't bare this show after S1.. I can only imagine how awesome this show would be if it carried the same weight as Made in Abyss..
