Would YOU Buy These Speakers?

Like I said in the video, this one is all about what YOU want, and whether you would buy a pair of the speakers shown in this video. I need to see a significant number of "yes" answers to that question to go any further with the idea.
Up front, the preliminary price for the pair is in the area of $2000US.
I would have to develop the project more to pin down the price exactly, but I'm pretty sure that would be the lowest. When you compare that to what's out there now for floor-standing three-way speakers at retail prices, that's a reasonable sum.
These are a simple, elegant design with a solid wood baffle, quality high efficiency drivers and a well designed crossover that gives flat response from 65Hz to 20KHz. They have excellent on and off-axis response and can be driven to normal listening levels with a low power amp.
Sensitivity at one meter is roughly 90db at 2.83V. AKA 90db at 1 watt at 1 meter.
Nominal impedance is 8 ohms.
Power handling is higher than your ears should be hearing. These are speakers for serious listening and they have more power handling (at low distortion) than you would ever need for that.
Being open baffle, they will need a separate subwoofer crossed at 60Hz to fill in the sub bass if you want that (I would!). Any sealed or ported sub from any manufacturer should work fine for that.
Drivers are a 10" woofer, a 6" midrange and 1" dome tweeter. All are high (over 90db) sensitivity and paper cone / soft dome.
The midrange in particular covers a wide portion of the frequency range and projects detailed, realistic sound in the critical part of our hearing. The response has been precisely tuned with a wide Q notch filter to blend perfectly with the woofer and tweeter.
Other stuff: I'll be building a final version of these in the coming months and that full build will be on my main channel. I'll be doing that even if this market research shows a lack of serious interest, because these truly are excellent sounding speakers.
IF the limited production run does go ahead, I'll use that experience to decide whether I'd want to go further with making and selling speakers. A possible follow-up product could be a subwoofer specifically designed for these speakers.
As mentioned in the video, this would be a KickStarter type arrangement where you'd have to commit the full sale price (plus any applicable taxes) to secure a set. Packaging would be included in the price, but shipping would be extra.
Lower cost options would be the plans only (with list of drivers and crossover schematics), or plans plus assembled and tested crossovers for two speakers.
I'm not sure about whether this would be available to buyers outside continental North America. The shipping might be too expensive or difficult. Sorry, not my fault!
I should say that there won't be any "custom" options. The solid wood baffle will be a light coloured hardwood, like ash, oak or maple. And the body of the speakers will be MDF painted a matte black. MDF is best for this in that it adds mass to stabilize the speakers.
Likewise, the crossovers will be made from fairly standard parts - not cheap, but not the exotic placeboes that a lot of audiophiles think are needed for great sound. I have extensive experience using crossover parts of various quality and have not been able to discern a difference when comparing good quality to over-priced caps and inductors.
Long and short of it is (from my perspective) that if it sounds great, it is great. And I KNOW that greatness comes from taking extra care of the important factors, and not pandering to the often misguided view that every detail counts equally. It doesn't work that way in the real world, and it doesn't work that way for audio.

Yes!
I paid half that for some Klipsch F-3's. dual 8's and a 1" tweeter. Price is OK.
@@kenanderson2216These are on a whole other level my man. Those are entry level. These will likely best many more expensive speakers. Nothing beats a well designed open baffle. And they will surprise you. You do need to pull them out into the room though. At least 3 ft, give or take. ✌️
@@kenanderson2216Also the quality of the parts will be light years better. Klipsch builds speakers to a price point. Meaning they use cheapo parts, and watch every penny. For instance I have a set from them (RF3 I'm pretty sure, same design as yours 2 8in, and a tweeter) that have cone break up so bad that they give you listening fatigue.
A simple notch filter that they could add for less than the $10 in parts (at Parts Express), because they buy in bulk. But left it out, because that's how these companies do things.
There will be none of that nonsense from this guy. Because he doesn't have share holders to answer to. ✌️
I have a similar dream as you, John. I think you need to reach out outside of the DIY community here that watch your videos to gauge if people will buy your handmade products. Clearly, everyone here wants to do it themselves.
I'd be interested in an "assemble it yourself" crossover kit, like a sort of in-between option.
Used to be called decades ago Heath Kit. Self assembled electronics. I still have amps that work. at 12 watts, pushing it, with very efficient drivers, that analog ambiance is hard to beat.
yes
Yes! That would be a fantastic project to do with your kids or whatever to get them into building electronic speakers, the whole 9 yards. It’s a great idea!
Me too!
Im down for plans and crossovers 😊
Honesty and openness Has always been something you have practiced and demonstrated over the years. Serious audiophiles appreciate those important qualities in audio. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Do it!! Make it a kit that we can assemble at home.
agree with this.. I've been looking for an OB kit
I think you're a very competent speaker builder. I would be interested in plans or a full DIY kit that includes everything in one box.
I moved to open baffle a few years ago and I'll never go back to box speakers for home music listening. I do still use box speakers in my living room for movies and tv, mostly because they are smaller and more durable. Kids are hard on equipment and my girlfriend is constantly moving them to clean. My expensive amps and open baffles stay in a dedicated listening room under lock and key. Good luck with your speaker business, I have no doubt they will sound amazing!
My interest in this project is high but I have my own shop tools and electronic skills. I would definitely buy the plans and possibly the crossover depending on the cost. I also think you will get 20 buyers right away because of the research you have done on this speaker design.
John, our community is well steeped and supportive of the DIY open baffle space and would love to be a supporter of this endeavor. I think we need more exposure to the amazing sound that open baffles bring to us as audio enthusiasts in an industry where low efficient boxes are being crammed down our throats. I as we am of the camp that probably will never go back to box speakers (god knows I’ve been trying to find a pair that betters open baffles). Curious as to the intended cost of the fully made version of your baffle? I didn’t recall it being mentioned. But we would love to support your endeavor!! Cheers buddy and keep up the killer work!! We love what you’re doing. 😊😊😊
Sell the plans John. Guys in Canada would buy from you for sure. You need to start a diy company and sell knock down wood cabinets and speaker kits with plans. I am very Interested!
Yes to plans plus assembled and tested crossovers for two speakers.
Very exciting prospect John. I am definitely keen for your second option, i.e. the diy plans plus crossover.
Love your channel and love the idea. I like making things myself, so would be interested in the plans but probably not finished speakers. Keep up the good work!
Hi John. Thanks for taking us on this journey with you. YES! I would enthusiastically buy one of your speakers. I like the idea of having multiple price points, because I would probably buy a flatpack from you and then build the speakers on my own.
ATTENTION!!
I need to clarify that the plans and plans plus crossover option would only be available if there were enough takers for the fully built speakers. The idea would be that the fully built speakers would offset the overall loss that happens when I make plans to sell at a low cost.
Plans take a lot of time to do and I doubt there would be enough buyers of the plans to justify making them and setting up to sell them.
If that’s your stance, then not interested at all.
I would think you could sell 500-1,000 sets of plans based on your 218K subscribers. That's $10-20K right there for your time to put the plans together with almost zero expense to you. I think you could also sell a further 50-100 crossovers for those of us who are woodworkers but doubt our electronics assembly skills.
I've been selling plans for 10 years from a channel that has over 1 million subscribers, so I know pretty well how many would sell. I can say that your estimates are a lot higher than reality.
@@IBuildIt
Do you have a link for where to buy these existing plans?
Type ibuildit into your browser and it'll take you right there. They are woodworking plans, mostly workshop projects and tools.@@Masterdebator881
This will be a very slanted marketing research, because you attract mainly people that like to build stuff. So this audience would not likely buy a complete speaker. Something to consider.
Love this! I’m on a similar journey. Right at the beginning but I share the same dream. You’re an inspiration I hope this works out!
I am a DIY guy that would like to suggest a couple options in the order of my interest. 1) Ready to assemble and finish wood baffle and base. Crossover schematic and driver part numbers. 2) Full set of plans for baffle, crossover schematic, speaker part numbers.
I've built and designed for individuals and companies. Imo, selling the plans is much more profitable than selling complete speakers. I rarely build for others as the ROI tends to be very low. Particularly doing it on your own.
I’ve been following your channel for quite some time and have used your guides to improve my home audio system. I would absolutely purchase either option you described. Put me on your list of committed buyers. Thank you.
Yes. This is a great offering. I would be interested in paying for your speaker design, list of drivers, crossover design, and baffle dimensions etc to assemble myself.
Would love to buy the plans, as I am in South America buying the assembled speakers wouldn't make sense, but the plans with crossovers and CNC files (for a price that makes sense, max 100 usd) would be great
I’m interested in whatever offerings you come up with!
1. Thanks for an enriching content.
2. I would buy the instructions
3. I'll be more tempted with a design that omits the need for a sub by 'closing a box' behind the woofer facilitating something around 35-40 Hz?..
so good to hear how passionate you are about this that's how I feel about speakers too
Yes! I would be interested...preferably complexly finished ( but interested in kit also). I live in BC - so no duty!...thanks for your research and attitude...bill
I would most definitely be interested in a set of plans with the crossovers. Love your channel.
i would be interested in buying the plans
I would commit to a kit that includes a built crossover and plans. I'd build my own baffle.
I am definitely interested in the plans plus assembled x-over.
Being a retired person on a fixed income, I'm sure they would be beyond my income, but I think this is a great idea for you as a very talented woodworker and superbly knowledgeable electronic design individual. Best of luck to you I've always enjoyed your woodworking videos.
Open baffle in room response looks fantastic. I bet they sound good John. I don't have time to watch the whole video right now but I would consider a set for my home, yes. The DIY version is more up my alley. I am a bit of a woodworker hack but I still have fun putting things together.
I'm in the UK so buying the built speakers is pretty much excluded for me, but the suggested price of around $2000 seems a very good price to me, so I hope you get enough people saying "yes" to also enable you to provide build and crossover plans that I would then buy - you suggest $20 for those which seems extremely low cost. I don't know about wood prices in Canada, but here in the UK real wood for the baffle is going to be expensive on its own, so if you could find a way of exporting it could still be worthwhile.
I would be very interested in plans + crossover and failing that just plans. I've wanted to build a 3-way open baffle speaker for some time but don't have the time/skill to do the required testing & measuring to do it the right way at the moment.
Hey John! Love your channel, and love your builds. I would definitely be interested in the plans with the crossover schematic. Keep up the great work!
Me too 🙂
I think it's a good idea...especially since you would offer different options (plans, plans + xo, entire kit, assembled speakers, etc.). Coincidentally I am looking to build a set of speakers soon and it would be nice to have an open baffle option.
Best of luck.
I am most definitely interested.
Hallo John, love your work and honest opinion. I Think its a great idear you have. Located in Denmark and loving diy, I would be partular interested in the options to just buy the plans. Keep up the good work!
I would buy plans and the supplies, especially if the crossover was ready to go.
We might be the wrong audience to ask because we’ve likely come to your videos out of a DIY disposition.
Yes, crossovers with plans would be what I would like as well
Love the options idea. I’d buy the premade crossover with plans.
I would be interested in the plans and the crossover (because I have no time to learn how to do that). I'm actually actively looking to add a really good set of speakers to my living room (which has minimal treatments). I subscribed to your channel from woodworking and came here because I have been an "audiophile" since I was a kid. I have wanted to make my own speakers for a long time but the right design and crossover is where I always get discouraged. This is exactly what I need. You take the guesswork and mistakes (i would inevitably make) out of the equation.
I'll second that!
Due to transportation costs, I live in Montreal Canada,
I would be interested in the Plans approach only with the list of drivers and the schematic of the cross-overs. In Montreal we have the possibility of having the crossovers built locally at Solen for example, with the desired quality of coils, capacitors and resistors. Sincerely hoping that your project moves forward!
Would love some plans and give it a go . But I am like you and like building speakers .
Don’t let any thing stop you , build a few pair and sell them give that idea a go and don’t let any thing stop you
I would be interested in the plans, keep up the good work!
Having watched several of your videos, it is clear that you approach speaker design in a very intelligent and methodical way. I have no doubt that your design will sound great, and I am interested in purchasing a set of your plans. After my interest in DIY speakers got rekindled several years ago, I have been building prototypes of my original designs that involve open baffle woofers for the upper bass and lower midrange,, with omnidirectional horn midranges and horn tweeters. Like you expressed, there is no going back to box speakers after hearing well designed open baffle speakers.
I'm all in on the "plans with the completed crossovers and list of drivers". I'm 70 yrs old and probably don't have a lot of time left but it has been on my bucket list since my 20's. I have built speakers for cars and trucks but I lack the knowledge to design crossovers for elite
sound room speakers. Hope this gets off the ground soon. Best of luck and health.
I built speakers semi-professionally in the early 90's. What does "semi-professionally" mean? At the time I owned an audio installation business that installed A/V in homes, small businesses, churches and other similarly sized entities. Back in those days, there were limited products available and I ran into situations where the customer wanted "X" and "X" was no where to be seen in the market. So I used my skills as a hobbyist speaker builder to suit the customer. I probably designed around 50 systems in the span of two years. While I made a profit off of each of those systems, if I compared it to the rate I made doing installation, I actually lost money. Time is the cost that a lot of people forget about when manufacturing something. If you notice I said I "designed" 50 systems, but probably only built 5. The rest I contracted out to a professional woodworker who could bang out my design in under an hour, no matter how complicated and it looked a lot better too. Good luck on your endeavor. Personally, I think you should go for it. Just remember, that trying to make money off of a hobby, means that is no longer a hobby. That is a lot more significant that what most people think.
I'd be super interested in purchasing plans with crossover designs because I plan on building my next set of speakers. Been wanting to get into OB for a while now and will keep watching to learn more. Thanks!
I think that's a wonderful idea. Looking at the project you do, I have a very good feeling. So much crap in the market, but yours look professional. Sadly being in Canada would make shipping very expensive, but buying the plan sounds good to me (hopefully if I can get the same drivers you can get).
Go for it John. I think its a great idea. You have the skills and talent. You and i both know how much better these speakers can be compared to mainstream offerings. Im producing my own line which i hope to release in the new year. Go for it. I wish you all the luck 🙏
I appreciate that and good luck with yours, as well :)
HI John, I think you're going about this venture in the right way. I certainly will be interested in plans and a built cross over. I have watched you on your woodworking channel as well as this one and I believe you have demonstrated a competent and creative understanding of speaker building. You also come off as an understated, down to earth guy who knows what you are doing. I have been thinking about attempting to build the Qualio Audio speakers (Please check them out, they seem to have the best of both worlds as to open baffle and boxed combo).
I think the problem here might be the target audience. Your channel seems to be geared toward the DIYer, who would be more inclined to build speakers, rather than buying a pair that's built already.
Would / Could there be an option of the Plans, crossovers, AND components BUT - We build the enclosures ourselves? This would save on shipping huge for both parties. It would also make each person come up with their own WOOD hahaha! Save us all on shipping. No need to ship wood all around the world. Love this idea. I am Canadian and $2000 'FREEDOM bucks is too steep for me..." Plus we still would likely want to add a subwoofer...unless that was created within the package then we could build that box/enclosure ourselves as well. Thank you great ideas. I love your content. Cheers!😎
Regarding subwoofers, I built two open baffle subs using 18" drivers meant for infinite baffles. It's true that box drivers of that size might produce more low bass, but I get plenty in my room, and the freedom from box resonances really cleans up the bass.
Can you get bass slam from open baffle subs? Or is that a box thing? ✌️
Or even bass punch. Any of that real tactile feel you can get from a nice floorstanding speaker. ✌️
I would be interested in buying your plans and building them myself. Although 2K is very reasonable for your the quality, it is too steep and the reason I am here is to be inspired to build my own. I like the plans and crossover option as well. I bet you can easily find 20 people with 2k to do this awesome project. I wish I was one of them.
Flat pack kit would be great! Not sure what the drivers cost, but to keep whole kit between $400-$700 would probably have a market. Shipping is the main killer right now. Wish you best of luck! Hope to see your speakers on some audiophile CZcamsrs channel one day!
John, being a woodworker myself I would committed to purchasing option 2 that you mentioned.
That price range seems reasonable - for completely custom workmanship!! The question I would have is what exactly makes them outstanding audio-wise? I value the woodworking part for sure but dont understand the distinction from an audio quality point of view. Signed - possible customer.....Dont care about the shipping because that applies to anything.
Good to see an efficient 6-inch midrange being used. I don't like the sound of anything smaller. And I prefer the sound of efficient drivers.
I would definitely be interested in purchasing the plans. And if I decide to build them I would prefer to purchase the already-assembled crossover.
I'm very interested in this project and to see where it goes from here. Would like to know more about the nuts and bolts of the drivers/ x-overs etc. but I love the general design parameters. I'm in Vancouver B.C so x-over /design might be more to my liking (if I could access the drivers needed) Not sure what shipping/duties on a full build would be but would like to explore both options. Looking forward to your future vids on this endeavor!
3-way crossover kit DIY would be great
One of the biggest challenges is logistics. Shipping costs really put a dent in things that are large. If you can get the drivers and components from a place that the price includes the shipping, then this would be ideal. If I was still working I would not hesitate to buy plans plus a crossover. I will still buy the plans to support your efforts. At the moment my limited $ is going towards room treatment as I have a small, low ceiling concrete bunker as my "listening room" and it has been a bear to work with. Your channel and those that you follow have been instrumental in helping me get it to the point where I can truly enjoy listening to my OB speakers again. I think that it may be a nice idea to include plans or plans plus PCB for a two channel amp that matches the speakers.
Definitely interested in the plans with the crossover
Siegfred was a great guy! He would explain the most basic concepts to people very patiently and was always eager to share his knowledge. He was special combination of theoretician and iterative designer. I loved the Orions and even more so the LX521.
Good luck on your project!
Im interested in the plans and crossovers and drivers. Been always liked open baffle type speakers. I think you having several options helps you and the consumer both. There will be people who want fully built speakers. Then there are the people like me, like the idea of building it ourselves. I already gave the wood and several subwoofers. So i hope everything goes well for you endeavors. Cant wait to see what you come up with.
I would love a full flatpack + parts as an option. Secondly the plans with a pre-built crossover. Looks exciting!
I would by the basic plan, the finished speaker is tempting.
I'm the same way. Big OB setup but the lack of a box sound, the sense of ease, just seems natural.
This definitely sounds interesting. Plans and crossover for me.
Interested …would complete my bucket list.
Hell yes! I would love to have one of your speakers.
I would be interested in an open baffle speaker like this. I might want one with a good ribbon tweeter instead of a soft dome. I’m an O/B believer. If I had a “flat pack” of pre cut baffles so I could assemble them, I would be very interested in that.
I'd buy plans for sure, especially if they came with schematics for the crossover
I would be interested in the plans and built crossover. I have a new wood shop I am building so this would be a great project. I am not a huge audiophile, have a pair of elacs and a sub right now that I have been wanting to replace.
GO for it from Canada Best of luck!!!
Plans and crossover would be something I would be interested in potentially.
I like the design of the speakers, the lean back of the face so the tweeters are further away, and the general clean design. I think I would be interested in plans as I have some Naim SBLs already for me. Maybe get a job lot of circuit boards and let the consumer get the components and solder then. That would be most cost effective for you in terms of postage and profit. The only feedback I have design wise is that the mid would look better moved closer to the woofer imo but this is purely aesthetic. Good luck with this project.
The midrange and tweeter are so close to each other because it helps in time alignment, (and the resulting better off axis response, especially vertically, or "stand up/sit down" differences), that way the sound is more even and consistent, as when compared to a design where the midrange and tweeter are farther apart. That's probably why he designed them like he did.
John, love the idea; I would buy a fully built pair. $~2k seems very reasonable. Any light-colored hardwood would be great, but maple would be perfect.
OBs are my kind of speakers bu I am most likely to build my own. Actually I did build my own which are 4" fullrange with 10" helper woofer. They are small room speakers but work fine in that environment.
My next project would be much higher efficiency with pro drivers using larger full range, 15" wooder(s), and helper wooder. Target would be at least 95db/W/m down to at least 40Hz.
No foul, I'm on the other side of the "pond". Your idea sounds brilliant though. I'm trying to develop OB p.a. cabinets. I'll be intrigued to see where you go with this. Clem in Finaghy
You made me laugh out loud four seconds in. Well done mate.
I’d be interested - I’ve always wanted some open baffles ever since I heard the Dahlquist DQ-10s, must have been 20-some years ago!
I’d buy the plan. Design is nice, and I think it would be a nice way to get into open baffle.
Any chance you have decided on offering the options you discussed? Since seeing your video, I'm stoked to get started.
Sadly, I'm no longer in the market for great speakers, my hearing has degraded fairly severely over the past decade or so. Curse of old age. But otherwise, I would be interested. Two decades ago, I bought a setup with a REL subwoofer and two Sonus Faber speakers. I think the speakers cost about what your target estimate is for, so that seems reasonable. I like the open baffle design. I can still clearly remember the impression I got listening to a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers in the mid-1970s.
I'd 100% buy the plans.
I am interested John.
I think with the cnc, a flat-pack diy sent with plans and components would work, and more than 20 sets
I would pay $2k.
I would be interested in purchasing a kit that included drivers, a complete crossover and plans. I would want to know the cost.
It would be helpful if you would show a completed unit first, demonstrate with a typical frequency/db chart, and specs including efficiency, weight and overall dimensions.
Interested. I've never used an open baffle speaker before. I would go for a kit that includes every thing but the wood. Or the assembled one. Not decided.
Salutation from Ottawa.
I'd be down for the plans of the build and XO but not one of the 20 pair you (MUST) plan to build.
Yes. I would buy the plans. How much do you estimate will be the cost of the drivers + crossover components?
Yes to plans or possibly plans with all crossover parts. I am way too cheap to buy $2000 speakers, lol. I wish I could understand these speaker/crossover videos, I can't seem to grasp what's going on with how to even make your own crossover. I needed more "intro to crossover videos," I guess.
I have been researching open baffle speakers and would love the ability to purchase a kit. My limitations are lack of woodworking tools. I could purchase very expensive speakers for the cost of all the tools required. I am comfortable with the wiring aspect of the crossover and drivers.
i would be interested in a DIY Kit only - 90% of the fun is building the speaker yourself. So, plans, crossover parts and drivers.. i would prefer to do the entire assembly / soldering myself. Similar to Troels Gravesen / Jantzen Audio.
I would be very interested. I moved to diy open baffle speakers a few years ago and am always interested in something new. I don’t need a prebuilt crossover. I would be more interested in a flat pack. But, if that is my only option count me in.
I think it's an excellent idea. Since I'm a diy'er, and have already built several designs myself (other peoples designs, mainly Paul Carmody's), I would be in on the lowest cost of the plans and crossover schematic. I'm not exactly cheap, but I am frugal. Why buy, when I am capable of the build myself. Couldn't design a crossover myself... 'cause I ain't got the time or equipment to do it.
HiJohn,
Love your videos and your projects. I agree with majority for start up of plans and assembled crossover (option #2). What sort of pricing for this option? Very interested.👍
Please post if you are short on orders for full speakers.👍
Plans would be great!
love your channel. enjoy the topics. $2000 is out of my range. im more on the budget side of audio hobby.
I would be interested in the plans plus assembled crossovers. I enjoy the woodworking aspect o the project and would like to buy the drivers myself.
