Greetings indeed! I tried my best to capture the beautiful design and sound of the outboard. The plan was to restore the outboard and use it on a boat i renovated, but it didn't go as planned. Too much trouble getting the spare parts I needed then. Well, at least I made this video that everyone can enjoy!

I have the same machine except its a '63 and it has electric start. It didnt run and I was going to sell it.. but then started restoring it, got it running and ultimately fell in love. It has been a joy to work on.
FYI I found the wiring schematic here:
      i0.wp.com/www.aomci.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Wiring-1962-63-JE-40HP-Without-Generator-verified-fr.jpg?ssl=1
And all the exploded diagrams plus part numbers here:
      www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1963&hp=40&model=RDL-25
Yours might vary slightly if it's a different year, but should be able to find your model on those sites. Hope this helps! And thanks for sharing the video!

@@robbob5318 good luck with yours! Mine was basically free too - came on a boat I got for $150. Had about 80psi compression in both cylinders and the starter worked. New coils and spark plugs was all it really needed. That and a bit of elbow grease...

NO outboard should start like that. It is lean sneezing for one thing which means the low speed needle needs it come out a half turn to start and tune from there.....

Either too much air or to much fuel. Try adjusting the carburetor needle. If that doesn't work try closing the carburetor choke until something happens or fully closed. If none of those work, take apart carburetor and try again. If it starts once or twice there's at least enough of a spark from the spark plug. Disconnecting the thermal switch might help too. A little late but better than never I guess :J
