  • BACK AT WHEAT and LISTERIOSIS IN THE SHEEP BARN.
    After a few days out of the fields, we are back at it.
    Unfortunately, these few days have been frustrating for me back in the barn. Looking like we may be dealing with a potential listeriosis issue in our first cut haylage.
    I’ve been on the phone with my vet this past week getting updated on symptoms to look for, a treatment plan, and preventative measures to practice.
    Bottom line, if you don’t catch them early, the prognosis is not good.
    We successfully got a couple more fields of wheat harvested, and finished our custom harvesting for our friend Brett. However, we met up with a SKUNK!
    Let’s just say, the combine spend a couple nights outside and not in the shop…
    Stay tuned for the final few days of wheat, including BALING STRAW footage!
    Thanks so much for watching!!

    Poor little sweetheart, that is painful to watch. I do greatly appreciate you sharing it all, the good & the bad. People understanding more about their food and the troubles that come up and how hard farmers work to fix problems is a good thing for everyone (at least it is for me!)

    Sandi, thank you for those drone shots - the machinery, working in tandem looks like an elegant dance! All in the beautiful wheat coloured background. I also watch "Just A Few Acres Farm" on CZcams and the difference in size of farm equipment is totally amazing! I know I'm watching a vlog from wheat harvest 2019!

    God bless your honesty and transparency. Many would be mortified to admit a mistake, even if wasn't their purposeful doing. I have adult sheep, which are sick right now. just figured that out day before yesterday. runny green diarrhea. I think they got into a tub of grain that I'd mixed up. Or poisonous plants in the field. Three of the ewes have babies.
    I separated the ewes from the babies, so the lambs wouldn't ingest fecal matter while nursing, which may have possibly already happened, but they are bottle feeding well and nibbling on grass/alfalfa. For the adult sheep, I wormed them just in case. mixed some DE in water w a tad of milk replacer to make them take it easily to help kill any bugs. Gave them the diarrhea cure= juice of 2 lemons+1/2tsp baking POWDER...added some Power Punch to this concoction to give them a boost. Gave B Complex shots to the two worst ,...cause they held still for it. This morning I gave them each a dose of PROBIOS(in case I/they messed up their good gut bacteria) mixed w a good bit of water in case they weren't drinking much. Definitely helps to use a drench gun instead of a syringe w/o needle. I hate having to try to get that syringe in their tightly shut lips, but drench gun...no problem, easy, less stress for them.
    They are, ThankYou God, doing a good deal better today. I thought I might lose the Burnie, one of the mama's, but she's a bit better today....
    yesterday I took advantage of the situation and used her weakened state to go ahead and "shear" her w tailor's shears. I got to spend time with her that way as well.
    I love all my sheep. I keep them to fertilize the ground naturally and to mow lawns ;)
    We're trying to have organic fields, so I am worried that we won't be able to keep up with the fields weed load. We're not established yet, but working on it.
    Thanks a million for all your "OOPS" videos. Very helpful and humble.
    ps. just learned how to mild 4 days ago, right before this crazy sick sheep get toghether.

    Thanks for discussing your soil building efforts, it’s great that soil health is being recognized and increasingly acted upon. Sorry some of your sheep have been hit with listeriosis, sick animals are always worrisome and you are extra busy with wheat harvest. Would love to see Jack’s handy stoplight system in action; pretty clever. We have skunk sometimes come through our neighborhood - our neighborhood borders rural/open space - and I only know they’re around because of the smell. It’s really strong for a little while - and overwhelmingly in your nostrils - then just fades away. Too bad people on the road don’t understand you’ll be off again in no time, they just have to slow down for a little bit.

    Drivers are terrible with machinery on the road here too. We have flashers & beacons & signal lights & they still try to go around you when you are trying to make a left turn. A couple of years ago our neighbor was making a left turn into his driveway & a driver wasn't paying attention & rear ended his chisel plow & totaled the chisel plow & his car. Luckily nobody was seriously hurt. They need to realize that if they like to eat among other things machinery on the road is something they have to live with. Thanks for the video.

    Wow. That Listeriosis is a serious bummer! How much do they know about this disease? Questions i would have - is it contagious between sheep or only from dirt? That lamb broke my heart with its circling. And those losses were serious in every way you look at it. Did any of those that came down with it survive?
    As a city raised girl who comes from farm stock - i had NO idea those combines were so absolutely massive. You see them in the field at a distance and you don't have anything to help you with the scale. Until i was watching you fix that machine....omg they are huge!
    Those rude drivers need to get a grip. It is such a short lived inconvenience for them, at the end of their trip - i really doubt it will show any difference in time on the road if they just slow up and give way! It's like playing chicken with a train. There is no way to win that one. If you make it - you grow confidence and try again some other time and eventually - well.

    Here in France you can’t go on the road by yourself if the tractor/combine or thing is larger than 3.5Meters or 105feet you need a véhicule in front to warn the people on the road and you can’t go on the road with the header on the combine only if you can fold it smaller than 3.5meter/105 feet

    Sandi, I had a bad outbreak of listeriosis in a flock I was running back in 2014. I had the finishing lambs with cattle that we were fattening on an all grass program using baled grass silage. We were feeding on pasture that winter. Since then I've tried to avoid silage when possible for sheep, but that's easier said than done. It was pretty miserable to deal with, lost 10-12 out of 120 from what I remember. It happened fast and spread fast. I stopped feeding the silage as soon as I saw the issue and it still took a while to work out of the animals. I'm sure you'll get it under control, clean feed is so important.

    Hi Sandi! Hope y'all are doing well. About the listeriosis in your sheep, I have a question, and I hope it isn't a stupid one. Have you considered cleaning your sheep barn with a good cleanser and a pressure washer? I know it would be a hassle with the size of your flock, but I thought that maybe it would help clear out any residual bugs that could be hiding in the bedding, and reduce the chances of the listeriosis spreading to other sheep. Just a thought -- Y'all take good care!

    I understand what you're saying about skunk smell, a couple of my dogs have been sprayed by skunks over the years and have come yelping., they literally were still wet from the spray and I immediately threw up it was so strong. That stuff sticks around on a dog no matter what you use. So gross !

    How are you treating the listeriosis? You folks in Canada have a lot labeled for sheep that we in the states do not. Fortunately, I have a good vet who has watched some of your vlogs and is good about working with me. Good luck with the sheep and wheat! You are an inspiration for me!

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  Před 5 lety +2

      Antibiotic, dexamethasone and thiamine... as per vet. Funny enough, we here feel like we still don't have near enough labeled for sheep...

    Battery drain down could be caused by extra radios not wired correctly, auto steer, GPS location all improperly wired. Remove the battery post + and run a tester to measure the draw and confirm something is sucking your juice been when all switched off. With a meter you can even know how many amps are being lost.

      Hill Grimmer I don’t think Sandi has understood, you also need to add a silage additive and generously remove any mouldy patches should they occur. She cannot possibly do that with her system.

      @@SandiBrock I didnt know if you would see my comment so I decided to wait until you saw if you did to give the reason. I appreciate the time you take to make your videos, as soon as one of your videos is posted I immediately start to watch it. The reason I watch your channel is because I am a 12 years old and my dad is a regenerative agriculture rancher. Our goal is to have healthy soil heathy grass healthy cows and healthy people. ( its our motto) I am was and still am in so much love with what we do that I decided I would try and contribute to what we are doing. I got a sheep herd. This is when I found you, I searched for sheep people but since most of them are kind of uninteresting I almost gave up. That is when I found you, you are funny, educational, and great in every way. I watched every one of your videos in a day or two, and am always waiting for new ones!!! Sorry that I went on a rant there but I love your channel so much! Thank you for making videos. That is why you are an inspiration to me.

    What happens when you hit a skunk with a combine? Does it go through into the hopper? Does it negatively impact the load, or in the grand scheme of things, do you just push through and by the time the grain gets where its going no one notices?

      @SandiBrock  Před 5 lety +10

    Great channel Sandi. Question. When unloading the buggy into the wagons, why do you start at the front and back up instead of starting at the back and driving forward? Is it a weight thing? The lighter wagon (if there is one) will be at the back? Keep up the great work.

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  Před 5 lety +1

      I'm never really sure... its just what was drilled into me when I started running grain cart... I think its partly the weight thing... If we have to quit and the back one isn't quite full, not a big deal, but if its full and the front one is empty, that can cause issues? I'll have to ask again...

    Maybe I missed it, but what are your concerns with the bits of sod as it relates (or correlates) to listeriosis? I know nothing of that disease. And I hope y’all get it sorted, whatever the cause! Good luck! Thx for the content!

      Bob Crone She talked about it from 2:04 to 2:30.
      Listeriosis is a bacteria that lives in the soil.
      The tractors and implements were throwing small chunks of soil when they were cutting their hay. When she went to feed that crop, the soil was still in the feed and some sheep ingested the chunks and got sick because of the bacteria in it.
