Normalizing stalking culture should not be encouraged. There is a demarcation between "fun" and making someone uncomfortable.

Having lived in Kota for a year, I can certainly say this gedi culture is quite prominent even there. You will find many vehicles just making rounds in the evening and especially during the weekends. Many end up following till the hostels and some even asking out. Tbh this actually made us feel unsafe and especially during diwali when most of the students return their homes, the city is half empty, never felt more unsafe than those times.

It depends upon the people of the place, Chandigarh is generally full of young students, max of them went there for fun only because the place is good, unlike Mumbai, the people there from starting have maintained equality amongst genders at home only, plus the Nirbhaya squad has done wonders there,, thank you for showing the reality .

I am not from Pune, but o understood this while staying there for few years. We should always learn if someone is better, rather than outright rejecting that there are flaws in this gadi culture. Students hai to padhai karo, hustle karo, ye bedi ka time hi kaha hai. I am from West Bengal , I stayed close to 1.5 years in Punjab. I really loveddd punjabi food, Now in kolkata i hunt for punjabi food only in weekends! Specially the nonveg ones are mouth watering.
But this gedi culture which i have seen to be true sadly, is tarnishing the name of beautiful rich punjabi culture.
I have observed in states where sex ratio is low, female foeticide happens there these kind of social evils surfaces, such as dowry, honor killings in intercaste marriage, misogyny in every sphere of life. Actually when women are treated as commodity to be breeded and making babies having father's surname, then these evil will surface. We indians need to improve a lottttt.
Anyway hope this culture ends soon.
    Wahe guru!

Originally the term "gedi" only meant to go out on a drive with friends and have a good time with them. However, lately desperation and wrong thinking has come along with youngsters, the college students, leading to a negative and pessimistic culture. And it's not okay, when people have normalised it. It was never there, I don't know what happened.

being from Mumbai, this is unacceptable. men stalking, gawking, teasing women is already disgusting and top of it that girl says "content" mil jaata hai !!! she considers girls including herself Content" Unless you respect yourself dont expect others to respect you.
I feel all this is far more deep rooted than what your eye meets. female Infanticide to begin with. We all know the statistics in certain places of Punjab and Haryana that there is so much shortage of women that sometimes a single women is married to all the brothers in the grooms family. she is literally married to 4-5 men !! Polyandry is rampant in these areas.
If these men grew up in a family culture of sisters and aunts who were "Respected" as sisters and aunts or wives, there probably would be no Gedi at all. its just a culture thing here to treat women like a piece of meat. The very bringing up of these men is toxic. very sickening. The cop came over to question you what you were doing but never came when so many cars and men were lining up to Gawk at women who are students !! these girls want to study and dream of having a good future for God sake - leave them alone. it is because of these disgusting men that most girls are deprived of higher or good education becs parents find it unsafe to send their girls to colleges or hostels. This entire Gedi thing as a whole should be scrapped off by some very strict law and rules.

I feel the most unsafe in Chandigarh from the DAV College Gate to the Auto Point in Madhya Marg.... i cannot tell you the amount of time I came running.....
