Well by-golly you did it! This was a really good video. I rebuilt the carb, new governor & throttle springs, cleaned gas tank, replaced fuel line, new spark plug, new magneto, new thermostat Ran once then tried to start, then nothing! This is my next diagnostic step. I learned what to look for without going over the top. Good Job!!😅👍👍👍
I have a Toro lawnmower and trying to figure out what to take off to be able to get to the head there like this. Came across your video. Funny how many videos I am coming across of guys fixing their lawnmower with no shoes on, just bare feet. ha
I have been trying to figure out what was wrong with my lawn mower for two weeks. This was the problem! Thank you so much for showing me how to fix it.
Thats what was wrong with mine thanks.removed muffler and cover. I just took some needle nose vice grips locked thelm on the small end of valve and rocked it back and forth.it freed right up
Fixed a rototiller and lawn mower with the same problem. Had to remove the head and tap the stuck valve back down with a plastic mallet after spraying penetrating oil (WD-40 or PB Blaster) around the valve.
Yelp i have two lawnmower model 20332 it's a Toro lawnmower and the other one is a Tory Bilt both are just about new well not new only never been used much it's doing the same thing since i seen your video im gonna try this first because i was gonna remove the intake valve with a valve spring compressor and clean it, Thanks buddy
I think I have a sticky valve which causes it to miss a compression stroke every 4-5 strokes. How long does this fix last? I'll get some PB Blaster and spray in the valve seat thru the spark plug hole. Tecumseh LV195EA.
I have a 12.5 Briggs and Stratton motor in a Yard-Man lawn mower which is about 17 years old. The valve seat ring on the intake feel out. Can somebody tell what made this happen . The mower was running perfect. When I pull the head off the color is not a burnt black. But a soft Gray. A normal-looking usage. Also the bends in the flywheel are not clogged. Just would like to know in case I'm missing something or just a rare happening
Craftsman eager 1....I I have a problem with the intake valve moving very minimally more like hopping up and down. Exhaust valve not moving at all. But I can spin them both by hand. I don't think valves are stuck. Maybe bad cam, are those push rods pushing on the valves? On mine they barely move so it looks like that it is not allowing the valves to open and close.... Sorry if I am not explaining this well. This is the first lawn mower I am trying to repair Thanks
@@redshirt-scotty Let me add that when I turn the motor by hand in the opposite direction both valves open and close properly. Eventually i cant continue to turn it because it gets to a point where it will not turn anymore. Just wanted to mention that. Thanks
@@MrChiest that's interesting. you clearly don't have the problem i'm working on in this video. the fact that your valves operate in reverse means they aren't stuck. you need to look for a solution elsewhere. i don't have any experience with an enginie with your symptoms. i'm totally out of ideas. sorry.
Hi a clear video , mines the same intake valve. I opened it up and the bottom central rod doesn’t look to be central in spring but moves ok. I ran out of oil and it popped and stopped. Ive a new spark plug filter etc and compression seems ok. Makes an air noise when starting. Any ideas. Can I send you a picture of the valves?
I found the exact same problem today, and unstuck it with a screw driver luckily. Are there no valve adjustments on these? I cant find a valve cover, lol????
I got a 5 hp Briggs on a reel mower. I started it for the first time this year. Second pull she fired right up. Well it sat for about 3 weeks. Posted it on Craigslist for sale. Someone calls says they want to come take a look. I go get some fresh gas put it in. And pull the cord. Same shit as the one in the video. So I took a wire brush and cleaned around the valve. I sprayed it with PB blaster waited awhile then took the pliers and carefully and gently moved the valve. Spun it over and it seems to be working fine now. So I put it back together an it started right up. I suppose it was the PB blaster it smoked like a sailor. But then stopped. and ran as good as ever. One thing I did you did not mention. Be very careful when spinning the flywheel over by hand. I got my finger caught between the coil and flywheel. And that hurt. I do not know if this will help or not. But after doing this I went back and changed the oil.
sure, intake valve was totally glued in place by the bad gas that sat wrapped around the valve stem during the hottest part of the year. i let the engine sit for 3 weeks (no rain for 4 straight weeks in august) and it froze right up.
I have that fvcking problem in my 5 cylinder 2,5 l Audi engine after standing for a year. I'll try this and share my experience... At least I have two engines. And noone is working, soooo... Wish me luck.
What would cause a situation like this? Had my brute 22" with the briggs 6.75 ft/lbs 190cc stick the exhaust valve. First thing i did was pull the cyl head. Happened after cutting on a steep slope going up and down. Then i stop the mower to move some things then ended up talking to the owner of the yard till my mower cooled down. Wouldnt start after. Checked the oil, was full. Maybe cutting on the steep slope caused lack of oil to the valves??? Anyway glad and concerned to see its common on briggs engines (*・~・*)
wow, i don't know what would cause the exhaust to stop working. bad old gas can stop the intake as in the video but won't stick the exhaust. you should check the valve springs. i think there is also a compression relief mechanism that can fail. but i'm really out of ideas. good luck with your fix.
@@redshirt-scotty bad old gas huh? Good to know. Im running premium all the time. Really wanna keep my mower in great shape. Valve spring is fine. After i tapped the valve back down using mineral oil as lube i put a piece of sand paper between the valve and seat to see how well it grab it. Like i said i got it running again on my 4th lawn job yesterday. Ive never encountered this situation b4. And im having a rough year. Melted aluminum head gasket on my china doll, broke 12 spokes on my trailer wheel, blew one briggs motor that was given to me, the next day picking up another mower broke off the wheel mount on my trailer now this? Man. Well, this will forever be known to me as the year of breaking (⊙_◎)
Interesting as the same thing happened to me. On a slope, popped stopped and checked was out of gas. Now I’m stuck as valves look ok except bottom one rod doesn’t look central but moves ok when I pull starter rope. Cleaned carburettor new spark plug air filter. Any ideas on what else it could be. Thanks from76 yr old lady
@@daphnekite578 are you 100% certain the valve seats completely? Maybe the valve seat popped out because thats what eventually happened to me not long after. I had to pull off the cylinder head to put it back in. But it will pop out periodically. So what i did was with a punch i pinched the aluminum around the seat so it mushrooms over it slightly. It will help if you take the seat to a sand paper or flat stone and reduce the height a little bit. It does not pop out now.
yes, close to pulling the valve but why? the repair was 4 years ago. engine still runs like it's new. run some fresh gas through to finish unclogging the valve guide and that's all it takes. a few months ago some joker insisted that to do the repair proper i needed to lap the seat. too funny.

Really good video, to the point and we’ll explained. My job for this morning on a motor that’s been sitting a on back bench for long enough, thanks.
Hey Scotty! Thanks for this video. I am about to check the valves on my lawnmower. I'll let you know how it turns out!

Run a capfull of Marvel Mystery Oil or just ATF in every tank to prevent this problem.

what you should do is take some vid of your engine and talk and show what you have tried so far. then post the vid to your channel.

it has no valve adjustments at all. nice when all it takes is a screw driver.
How often do you change out the oil ?
i go by engine hours and that typically puts me at about once every 3 years. i do sharpen the blade 3 times a year though.
