My favorite lens that I ever shot with was Canon's old EF 50mm 1.2. It was such a joy going back and reviewing everything I snapped. I've since moved on from Canon and don't miss much that they had to offer except for that lens. So far from what I've seen this Sony lens is looking every bit as good and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
You're the first one that i know that talk about the shutter sound on a92 and a1. This is why i like your review. Because it's a real world review from a wedding photographer point of view. Thanks again. Also don't need this 50 i already have the 55 1.8 and don't use a lot. Waiting for your 35mm gm review to push the trigger!
Great video mate. I’m still brand new on my CZcams journey as a photographer but channels like yours keep me inspired and motivated. That shutter is so quiet. Good for wedding ceremonies.
Great review, and thanks a lot for comparing the shutter sound of the 2 cameras, for me it's a crucial factor in deciding which camera to buy!!! Thanks!!!
I didn't have a 50mm full frame lens, so I bought the 50mm f/1.2 GM for nighttime street photography in Tokyo next month. I'm very impressed with it and even some of my test shots turned out to be keepers. The control I have over depth of field, its sharpness wide open and excellent high speed focusing are what I appreciate the most about this lens.
Super review, Chris- I always appreciate your down to earth no hype approach. Cheers for validating my trusty old 55mm Zeiss lens! Looking forward to your 35GM review.
Cheers Chris 🤙 my 55 isn’t going anywhere either. I now pair it with 35 1.8 and I love that combo 🤌 Extra 20mm reach seems to be just enough difference
Thank you for a very good review and comparizon. I have both the 50mm f1.4 Zeiss and 55mm f1.8 Sony, like them very both. Have been considering the GM but looking at the raw files i must say that the old planar olds its own. Marginally better bokeh on the GM at f1.2 but only the photo geeks would notice and i would save a lot of money :) Will stick with what i have. The 55 mm is mostly used on the A7C, fits that body very well. Would like to see a portrait shoot with the 50mm GM, 85mm GM and maybe even the 35mm GM.
Awsome video Chris ! So glad you did a comparison between the 55mm and the 50 1.2. Ill stick with my 55mm, not that i ever truly considered the 50mm gm, simply because I dont have the money for it. Cant wait for your 35mm review 😃
I pre ordered this one partially because of the 1.2 but mostly because it seems to be the only Sony lens that has good manual focus and autofocus ability.
Trying that out now, will make a video next week on the A1, but man. Honestly if I had the money I would 100% buy 2 of these right now. I’m super impressed
The shutter sound on the A7Siii is so nice that like you, I see little reason to use the electronic shutter other to save wear on the shutter. :p For now, I will be sticking with the ZA50 and for when I want small and light I use the Samyang 45 f1.8. I did not go for the A1 either. I got the A7Siii for low light no flash allowed events and I'm really hoping that there will be a 24 Meg A9iii with the A1 tech.
I love your reviews, so you get a like again, but I also want to point out here that the Samyang 45mm.f.1.8 from their Tiny series is in my opinion actually quite good .... Cheers Jess
Hello. Even if the mechanical is so quiet why would want to use it instead of electronical? It is only when you need to use flash at high speed that mechanical would be needed. Right ? 50GM looks great.
Hi, stupid question from me :) I just sold my 24 70 and 70 200 gm ( i also have 35/1.8 and 85 /1.8) , so now i will buy 24 1.4 gm (i don t have a good alternative here) and i really don t know if i buy 50 1.2 gm or 55/1.8 . So i have the money (from the 2 lenses that i sold) but it is worth?? I don't live from photography, I only earn let's say around 4000 euro from photography/year, but...you know you want always the best..(.for weddings and family portraits)hope you understand a little :)) ..or you have other sugestion, thanks
Picked up mine today and noticed that the aperture ring f-stop markings don’t fully align with the indicative marking on the lens, and are ever so slightly off. Have you come across this? I’d expect a lens with this price tag to be spot on.
Haha, I was messaging other people when I got my 135mm GM, the glass was moving. Love your photos and edits! Did somebody drop those leaves or were they falling on their own? I'll be using my 50mm more now after seeing examples. Just need to wait for months.......... The size difference from 55mm is huge but just imagine Nikon's 50mm 1.2 vs 55mm.
Really helpful video, Chris. Question: I'm a professor looking to create better instructional video quality...what lighting did you use in this video? It all looks great.
The a1 doesn't have mechanical front curtain, which is probably why its shutter sound is so silent. I'm afraid it will also affect the quality of bokeh, so sticking to electronic shutter might be the better way to go.
Hi Chris, you said the sample photos were edited with "Pack 2 & CTM 3 Preset", which presets are you referring specifically? I'm a bit confused, thanks for clarifying..
Thanks for the review, raw files are not helping much because focus points are different for each lens, would be great if you could shoot a complete scene rather than a small camera from 2 meters.
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer I’m looking for a “portrait” lens that can be used when traveling. I already have 24 GM and thinking to get either 50 or 85 GM.
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer vertical battery grip. Interesting to see a kiwi doing this stuff. I just ordered the GM - delivery will be in August. Still waiting for an A1 after 6 weeks.

Chris, your voice was trembling when you said at the end that you wouldn't buy the 50 GM... I am sure you want it and it's a lens to cry for.
Great in-depth review! Currently using the 35GM & 85GM. Wondering if the 50 would be necessary...
That A1 shutter is so quiet! 😯
Glad the 50mm f/2.8 didn't make an appearance, that thing is just painful to use.
this one has the new focusing system hence its making the sound. it has those floating motors so, the move abit when the lens has no power

The Sony 85 1.4 GM or the Sony 50 1.2 GM? Maybe you can do a comparison video for us
I'm going to replace my 85 f1.8 with 50GM. Personally, it would be a perfect match with my 24GM.
Waiting for the 24mm 1.2 in 2024
Awesome review as always. Speaking of budget 50(ish) lenses, have you tried the Samyang 45/1.8? I’m curious to hear your thoughts on that lens.
Yeah I’ve tried it I’m not a fan of 45 in general but it’s fine for the money

Chris can you do a review with the 24mm GM and the 35mm GM? I know the 24mm has been your favorite for a bit
Sony, PLEASE make a CCD full frame or crop medium format mirrorless camera similar to the a1/a9/a7.

I love the shutter sound of my XT4 over the Sony bodies 😅 btw, these G Master lenses are crazy good 😅
Please make a video of all the cameras shutter sounds. I need this ASMR in my life.
😂 just for you suckle

thanks for the review. i think i'll stick with my 55 zeiss. i'll take a look at the 35 gm instead
did you ever buy the 50 1.2?
Really helpful video, Chris. Question: I'm a professor looking to create better instructional video quality...what lighting did you use in this video? It all looks great.
Hey mate I used 2x Godox SL60w lights. You could easily get away with one and a soft box. Probably go for one about 1m wide
🔥🔥🔥
Totally dig your colour profile. But, man, do give your lenses some good blows.
The a1 doesn't have mechanical front curtain, which is probably why its shutter sound is so silent. I'm afraid it will also affect the quality of bokeh, so sticking to electronic shutter might be the better way to go.
I have mechanical front curtain off on my A9ii and same with the A1. It makes so little difference it doesn’t matter at all.
Can you customize the aperture ring on a Sony G master lens? Like if you wanted to change it from aperture to iso is that possible?
I don’t think so, could be wrong but I didn’t see that option
Hi Chris, you said the sample photos were edited with "Pack 2 & CTM 3 Preset", which presets are you referring specifically? I'm a bit confused, thanks for clarifying..
Ctm3 is a preset on its own and it’s in pack 2 :)
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer I see, the one you named The Universal?
How does it compare to the Panasonic S1 1.4?

hello super video, I need your opinion I have a 24gm and 85 gm that advise me on the 35gm or 50 gm thank you for your return

I am a tattoo artist and take photos of my tattoos within a studio.

I’d go the 35 or even the 24 depending how big your studio is

Definitely

I’d use a 50 over 85 for portraits alone anyway. But that’s just me
