    That Live Bait Sunfish looked good til you flipped it around and to me that BIG lead weight spot just ruined it. It looks so natural till you showed the other side that will be seen by fish. Wonder why they didn't conceal the weight inside the sunfish's body to not ruin the natural and realistic view. So that's the one I'll be looking for you to fish with and check out the results.

    On the live target blue gill the hook up ratios are pretty bad out of the box. The way they are weighted they sit high on the surface so when bass come up and hit it it pushes it out of the way. Pull out the weight in the bottom and put some split shot inside of it. Itll sit down on the surface alot better. Alot better hook up ratio.

  • @gizmocarr3093
    @gizmocarr3093 Před 5 lety +2

    Top water frogs with flexible tails draw strikes but fail hooking fish more than ones without a tail. The first hollow frog I used was Mann’s The-Rat designed by Lloyd Tallent around 1980. They had tails that made them worthless until you took the tail off. Few anglers use them because they cost six bucks and fishing heavy weeds and Lilly pads was not popular. They were soft as butter and had a short life span. I still have a half dozen of them, I never told anyone how amazing they worked because keeping it secret meant more fun for me. All hollow body frogs catch fish, some are better than others, try every color and size, and fish them all. Any lure made by Rapala will catch fish if you find its niche. They are so many models it is hard to find the one you are looking for. When you find one that slays fish buy a bunch and keep your secret to yourself. Terminator Spinnerbaits work great, T-1 titanium models are my favorite. Zoom Bubble gum Trick Worms work great for bedding fish and clear water smallmouth. Yo-Zuri Pins Minnows are great lures. I have a box of the tiny sinking ones that trout love. They are affordable and work good or better than more expensive ones. Megabass Dark Sleeper, Pow, Ka-Boom, Wham-O, toss one of these into a suspended school of deep water Hybrid-Stripers and hold tight to your rod. They may not hit for a few casts but once one does you can fill the boat. The bait often is deep inside their mouth; I suggest a good hook remover to prevent ruining lures and retie your line often. I use one with a V shape end that pops hooks straight out from the inside of the hook bend. I have no idea how they would work bank fishing but that is for you to discover. I have over twenty of them in my boat, does that tell you something. Keep it a secret if you read this far. If they don’t get murder before they hit bottom swim them all the way back close to the bottom they catch everything.

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes! I'm excited to get some fish on the dark sleeper. I threw the terminator spinnerbait this weekend and I had a LOT of trouble getting it to swim right. I checked the wire and messed with it a number of times to make sure it was straight. It appears the head was a bit misshapen...I'll have to try the other color.

    • @gizmocarr3093
      @gizmocarr3093 Před 5 lety +2

      @@DEBOSFishing When I use small ¼oz or smaller spinnerbaits, I never use a trailer because it defeats the purpose of downsizing the lure. I bend the wire so the end of the blade is parallel or slightly short of end of the skirt. Small spinnerbaits sometimes require a slower retrieved speed; they tend to roll on a fast retrieve. The blades may be too big for the head weight to handle so a smaller blade size may work also. Line is another thing to consider they work better when tied to small diameter line. I sometimes bend the wire to make it track left or right so it swims into and under cover. If they are both duds, get your money back.

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  Před 5 lety +1

      @@gizmocarr3093 yea, that's a good point about retrieve speed and line. I'll try downsizing and see how it does. If the stock blades give it issues, that's a problem. A company shouldn't sell something that is wrong out of the box. I'll do some experimenting. Thanks as always for your feedback, Gizmo!

    • @gizmocarr3093
      @gizmocarr3093 Před 5 lety +2

      @@DEBOSFishing I agree but some bargains turn out to be duds and some turn out to be wonderful discoveries. If you are looking for a small profile, killer search bait look for Strike King’s Rocket Shad. They sell them at Walmart, Cabela’s, Tackle Warehouse and many other places. They come in sizes 1/4, 3/8, and half ounce. You can reel them as fast as you can and fish clobber them. They work deep and shallow and they cast so far you will be amazed. Burn them back and cast out as fast as you want. They catch everything, use strong line and retie often. When they hit the water just reel like hell or let them sink to the bottom and then reel like hell. I was fishing one of these thru weed clumps in 10-feet of water from my Kayak. I would rip thru most of them easily but got stuck in one. So I pull up to the stuck lure and began pulling it free. It started to move and then all hell broke loose. A Musky launched out of the water the size of an ICBM missile. I saw my Blue Rocket Shad stuck on the side of its giant head. It landed on the other side of my kayak and the lure shot back and impaled my left shoulder. I wee-weeded a little in my kayak shorts, as the second splash doused me like a water balloon. There is a good reason they still sell this lure after all these years.

    Them pink finesse worms work excellent in the right conditions. Weightless texas rigged with a 3/0 or 4/0 hook offset ewg (though I prefer straight shank instead of the ewg- I get more hook up ratio) They also work really well on the drop shot nose rigged with a wacky style hook 1/0 or 2/0. Tons of action.

      @@BuckeyeRiver if using the pink bubblegum zoom worms I like to put the hook in and out of the bait just barely where the tip is sticking out than back it back into the worm so you can't feel the hook tip. Your more prone to snagging rigging it this way but when the fish hits it the hook is able to be set very easily. A cold front came through a few days back and I caught 13 large mouth, 6 of them I caught in a half hour on this same worm rig. Frogs catch some monsters 👍 I plan to throw a frog when it warms up a little (near later spawn season). I still have fun throwing my 20 year old top water zarra spook hedon in bullfrog color.

    I've used the Live Target Sunfish, but it isn't as successful as a top water frog, and for it's shape, it doesn't cast as well as one might think. One thing I like to do with it, which I saw in a video, is to remove that plug, add a small split shot or 2, then put the plug back. It increases the cast distance, and also causes the lure to sit straight up in the water instead of just floating broadside on the surface, and seems to increase the hook up ratio. One of my fishing Buddies uses the Scum Frog, and it does just as well as any of the others. I've used many brands of frogs, but now mostly use the Snag Proof Phat Frogs, because of the inner tube technology, I don't have to squeeze out water as I do with others, which I call "making the frog pee", haha.

    Bought some Fireline on sale. Never used it before. I don't know if I got some bad line or what, but the line was sticky, the black came off on everything and the line was impossible to cast. I finally stripped it off of everything and now it is taking up space on the shelf as I consider how to use a sticky, messy, impossible to cast expensive line! Maybe mine was defective, but I wouldn't give it any stars at all!

    On the Live target sunfish bend out and up the hooks will improve hook up ratio ... Most rubber frogs you can do the same and will help your hook up ratio big time just don't over bend and break the hooks!(i know old video but anyone who see's now can atleast try it)

    Take some scissors and make some cuts on the tail a bunch and make it kind of stringy like.. like the frogs have stringy legs.. make the tail like that an it makes the tail alot more flexible. That's what I did an it made my hook ups a lot better. But only if they try an hit it from the tail end. Some times they try an come up an hit it from the side..but cut the tail up.. also the dark sleeper is an awesome bait. U can swim it like s swim bait just try an maintain bottom contact.. U can also fish it like a jig for sure. And last the scum frog.. thumbs down for sure. I bought a hand full an literally threw them away.. but.. to each is on! Fish on tight lines

    Debo, as always, great video! You have enticed me to go out and go on the same quest and find new and cheap baits to try out. I also wanted to let you know that your videos like this are done quite remarkably; the hands on with great video quality and audio. Showing lures to the camera like the V-shaped hull on the pike lure you snagged definitely gives a great visual. Thank you for the channel and all of the great vids! Oh and shoulder update, might not have a torn rotator cuff, my chiropractor popped it and its much better. Im just a pansy and should be 100% in no time. Keep up the great work man! I just watched this video....kinda snickered when you talked about the rooster tail. I've fished them for a long time myself. They are so simple yet flat out catch fish. I had tremendous luck this past spring fishing the bumblebee pattern. Caught tons of bass, a 3' pike and had an amazing evening when I caught 12 channel cats all between 4&8 lbs. Keep up the great content and if you ever feel like taking a road trip, give me a buzz. I'm located on the fox chain o lakes in Illinois.

Might have to try more braid as I've been out the loop with braid because my rule of thumb is no braid for any finesse but then I realized my REAL rule of thumb is I hate braid and don't use it. Then just now I realized that maybe I'm biased and need to revaluate my stance on braid. Usually I use sunline if I have the money or seagar red label. I'm very partial to red label and don't notice a difference with seagar vs sunline. There probably made in the same factory any way.

    nice bargain bin tackle grad Debo! as far as the Live Target sunfish... great lure, and for me, I've had better success with the smaller 3" size. The bass seem to like to come up under and knock the lure up instead of eating the bait, so I like the smaller size for me, they seem to take it in their mouth better instead of trying to knock it away. Also the retrieve I use is very slow, almost a walk the dog/twitch in place, unlike the typical hopping or walk the dog forward retrieve. Good luck brudda!
