- Instantly improve your home's curb appeal by making a modern decorative wood column to cover up an existing wrought iron column.
In this brief tutorial I show the basic steps to assess, plan and build a wood column to cover up an existing wrought iron column. For less than $100 this DIY friendly project makes a major boost to the home's curb appeal. This is purely decorative column, not made to hold any structual weight. This is to give you an idea of the process to make a big improvement to your home.

Supplies used were 1/2" plywood with a smooth side (for painting or staining). I used 1 and 1/4 sheets of plywood. Depending on your column size and width will dictate the amount of plywood you need for your project.
1x4 Pressure treated wood used to make trim board for the base and top of the decorative column.
Great job and explaining
Glad it was helpful!
Great detailed post, this is exactly what I was looking for. The existing wrought iron columns [which I always thought looked cheesy] are load bearing and hold up the patio overhang. Although this will be a cosmetic change, I anticipate a major improvement in my patio's curb appeal. Thank you!!!
Glad to hear it helped inspire you to do the same! It does increase the curb appeal. Good luck!
Thank you very much for posting.
Great job
Great job!!
Thank you!
Helluva job! I need your help lol
Thanks Mario!
At the top of the box on backside is there an opening or did you cut a small piece of wood to cap it off? We have alot of birds squirrels & wildlife, just anticipating one of them dropping down the column from top and burrowing a hole out. Trying to get an idea of the shape of that piece or how to connect it, if I were to completely close off the top
Yes I did put in a small piece of wood to cap off the top to prevent that very thing. Sorry I didn't show that in the video.
Do you think I could box it out and then put cultured stone wrap on it? I'm trying to avoid taking the wrought iron off and having to put a 6x6 on then frame it out. I'm thinking it may work the way you did it?
If you were to add the cultured stone then I would frame it out with 2x4's then put on the plywood so it's more of a solid and stable surface to be able to install the stone on.
Will the weather not cause the wood to warp and rot?
It's been a couple years since this project and it's still in good condition. It was painted with an exterior paint, so that keeps it protected. If you can find pressure treated plywood then that would be a better option.
How did you know it’s not load bearing and for decoration only ? I have same thing but inside living room
The box I built is not load bearing and for decoration only. The wrought iron column probably is load bearing in this video. You should probably consult with a contractor or structural engineer to see if yours is load bearing if you are looking to remove it. Otherwise you could build a decorative box to cover the wrought iron in your living room.
