@@marlborothief Ok fair enough, but not for me. The original artist was almost always not putting this much thought into things, it just came out the way it did because they were relaxed and accomplished musicians. All I'm saying is that your time and effort will be much better spent learning the therory of music and improvising more, rather than making sure every finger is in every exact position on some tab. In my experience trying to exactly replicate something is time consuming, boring, and results in a really robotic and uninspiring sound.
Some of us are sick about sounding like the recording. Its a challenge to me and its fun when you finally nail it! Im especialy horrible about sounding like original plus im a huge Jethro tull fan. I spent many hours on learning Thick as a brick both on bass and the acoustic so when we have a band practice they have to listen to 40 minutes of my shit 😂

A compressor before the amp might help. A healthy amount of compression pre amp can help even out the dynamics so the strums sound more consistent, and it might also get a little thiccer and punchier to cut through the mix for "that" sound. This is a technique commonly used with bass for the same reasons
Eddie Murphy did it for me, Absolutely, that’s what got me enthralled with the sting and Police. I bought every album, nearly 40 yrs later. I’m still sold on this amazing music.
The problem is that Andy Summer's is using all 'Up Strokes' and muting the strings immediately after. Compression sure but the tight up strokes and shutting down the strings is what gives it that sound. I learned to play Roxanne in '81 from an instructor who would later become Stings Touring Guitar Player in '85.
Yeah Sounds like all the high notes are missing here. Looking up live recording of Police playing it, and the only difference is that there’s more reverb, but that tends to happen when you play in a stadium.
The mixing console has dynamic expansion/noise gating gating feature which can make the guitar recording a little extra tight. The reverb goes after that so you can't tell it's happening most of the time.
Listen closely. The tape is being sped up. Paul McCartney uses that trick all the time. Also sting accidentally sat on the piano at the beginning and they kept it in
The bassline also sounds simple but the timing on it takes chops and feel because Sting is rockin' slightly offbeat. Rio by Duran Duran is also syncopated but is somewhat easier because John Taylor walks around a bit on that bassline and it helps keep the time. Cool. 😎👍
Roxanne by the police came on the radio the other day when I was riding with my teenage daughter. I started to tell her the story of the first time I ever heard that song was exactly the way you explained it. I wonder how many people heard Roxanne for the very first time thanks to Eddie Murphy?
Try picking the bottom three strings with your 1,2 and 3 Right fingers at once. It gives the chord a much “snappier presence” (assuming the video isn’t mirrored)
It almost sounds like he’s timed it perfectly with one of those petals that incrementally increases and decreases the volume, but he’s turned it all the way up so it’s just mute and unmute.
Saw them do that song on the 83 or 84 Synchronicity Tour Tangerine Bowl. Reportedly 70,000 people. All of the stands and the entire field and surrounding areas covered with people. The Fixx opened and two other bands after that, then the police. They were never bigger. Good ol MTV days. Killer show, killer drum solo, killer video synchronization and light show. Well worth the $23 to sit or stand anywhere and move anywhere at anytime. Huge, huge show. Great sound. Back when things were truly cool. Senci and Gainesville Green also senci. If you got arrested, you weren't paying attention or just being stupid. Top 5 concert memories. So disappointed in Sting going solo. Never liked him after that. Except for Dune. "I WILL KILL HIMMMM!!!!. Commercial trailer
Try turning the Attack knob up all the way on your delay pedal,,,,it offers somewhat of a snappy ness to this type of strumming,,,mine is broken so I am not sure If It will help,,,Good Luck. ,!!! What a great song. ,!!! 😎✌✝💕
Most of the bands I saw sounded terrible in concert because they relied so heavily on studio tricks to make the records . I’m going to the concert to party . It’s not going to be the music i liked on the record mostly .
Tempo is all over the place in the recording. Analize that! The second verse it slows down for an example. That recording is like a living breading organism. Masterpiece
If Andy (Sting) couldn't play it right I'm person, it's undoubtedly because he was stoned out of his Gourd. I've seen several interviews with him before/after/during concerts and it may just as have well been Jeff Spicolli talking... 😆 At least in the studio they can hold him to a slightly higher standard of performance and get a good riff. out of him because, they know those "hooks" (the unique part of a song that sticks in your head) are what sells albums. 😀
Andy Summers came on CZcams himself to show us how to play the songs properly and got taken off…!? He played it on a telecaster so the snap came partly from that.
Roxanne re Bert’s back to a Bible Story when Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho . They went into the city and she noticed Joshua’s Sandals. They where old fashion and she hid them out , Joshua said how will we know a was here is hot Place so we won’t destroy it . She said I will tie a red Scarf 🧣 to the window . Rahman and he family where spared .
I don't takeaway the issue as being how you are playing it so much as the timing of the reverb and maybe a noise gate used on the recording might be a little tricky to work out since the reverb is super shallow and that clipping is probably (in my opinion) a noise gate. It is really important to keep track of settings (and equipment) used when making a recording. It is pretty common to stumble onto a great sound or effect only to lose it because of not taking the time to make a note of it, or better yet, keep a notebook with effects settings. Another possibility could be a combination of mic placement and whatever room the rhythm part was recorded in. That could explain why even Andy may not be able to sound "like himself" live--Open space live environment versus a small, enclosed room in the studio.
Breaking news. It's hard sound exactly the same live as in a recording that was obsessively and meticulously mixed and doctored to perfection in hundreds to thousands of hours. The guitarist should just play the intro a couple hundred times every concert until it's the exact same as the recording.
Lol why are so many of you butt hurt over people who find it fun to recreate the sound from a recording. It’s not like he was saying summers live performance was bad, just different from the studio album
Don't obsess over sounding like a recording, just have fun.
maybe it’s fun to some people???

Some people chase perfection, some people just play for the enjoyment of it, let people do what they want to do

"Roxxe- put on the red light" is definitely how the song goes
thats how eddie sings it in the movie
watch it
That’s how everyone sings it when they’re by themselves right?
What 48 hours? He’s sings Roxanne y’all are deaf
@@guitarscovered1606 he was singing the way eddie sang it lol
It actually sounds like "London Calling" by TheClash
Never realized that
Actually it's the other way round:
"Roxanne" release date: april 1978
"London Calling" release date: december 1979
I listened to It in the movie Good Burger🤣
Holy shit this unlocked childhood memories
Yeah, It came to me when I listened to It😅
So good
Haha, same
Same
The drummer Stewart Copeland wrote the score for that movie
*Last chord rings*
“It’s been a hard dayys night, and I been workinnn like a dog”
Woah.. i hadn't noticed that but as soon as i read this comment i realise it..
Easily one of my favorite songs by them. Keep up the great work man!

Indeed
Yep, I’m pretty sure the mxr dyna comp was the only pedal that Andy turned up all the way.
Eddie Murphy did it for me, Absolutely, that’s what got me enthralled with the sting and Police. I bought every album, nearly 40 yrs later. I’m still sold on this amazing music.
Probably delay or some pedal of some sort. Summers is phenomenal
That's awesome! You're awesome!
Love the videos. Keep em coming 👍
You must have been living under a rock if 48 Hrs is the first time you ever heard the song!
As a drummer first trying to play "Roxanne" I was stumped for a bit. You just have to get used to the time signatures of the whole and get grooving!
48 hours and another 48 hours are classic films!
The problem is that Andy Summer's is using all 'Up Strokes' and muting the strings immediately after. Up strokes and muting is what I'm hearing too.
It was probably double tracked in production, like several other Police songs.
Nope. You can't do it either.
😂😂😂
Harsh, man
Accurate

You need to tune your axe man
my second favorite police song, behind Synchronicity I
The mixing console has dynamic expansion/noise gating gating feature which can make the guitar recording a little extra tight. The reverb goes after that so you can't tell it's happening most of the time.
The Police sounds like really simple music but beneath the surface pure it's genius
Listen closely. The tape is being sped up. Paul McCartney uses that trick all the time. Also sting accidentally sat on the piano at the beginning and they kept it in
That was the first time u heard it was in a Eddie Murphy movie. That is hilarious!
THAT'S WHAT I SAID I HAD IT ON VINYL AT 8 YRS OLD
OVER PROTECTIVE PARENTS MUCH???

John 5 gets it right in his live medleys.
Not the only deceptively difficult song by the police
Roxanne by the police came on the radio the other day when I was riding with my teenage daughter. I started to tell her the story of the first time I ever heard that song was exactly the way you explained it. I wonder how many people heard Roxanne for the very first time thanks to Eddie Murphy?
I was taught to play this on top four strings only apart from Sus chord at the end.
My brother in Christ, you want snappy? UP. STROKES... Not. Down!
Try picking the bottom three strings with your 1,2 and 3 Right fingers at once. It gives the chord a much “snappier presence” (assuming the video isn’t mirrored)

There’s an overdubbing of different root notes on the recording. On the thirds. Saw Andy talking about it.
Givin me flashbacks to when me and my dad were haulin down the 5 when I was a kid, shout out 95.5 FM!

I believe that snappy sound you hear is because they’re upstrokes.
Most of the bands I saw sounded terrible in concert because they relied so heavily on studio tricks to make the records . I’m going to the concert to party . It’s not going to be the music i liked on the record mostly .
They're upstrokes, that's why.
Meant to have a reggae feel I believe.
That's like harder than polyphia
Tempo is all over the place in the recording. Analize that! The second verse it slows down for an example. That recording is like a living breading organism. Masterpiece
Andy Summer is a beast
I love that dead milkmen shirt
Saw them in 15 killed it
I honestly can’t believe other pro guitarists couldn’t make that opening riff sound “quite right”? Doesn’t seem impossible.
Right
Tight Compression is your friend for this one
Lol 48 hours was great I remember that
Sounded like London Calling (Clash)
that's the first time you heard that song? no offense but how old are you!!?? i'm 51 and i heard it at 8yrs old i had it on vinyl!!!!
Spot onn...u got it man
Need the right analog sound mixer for the delay!!..😉
That’s when I heard it first
That DMM t-shirt in the back is badass!
Very true.
Roxanne got me into playing guitar. Roxanne also made me put down the guitar.
Anyone have to do push-ups to this song in gym.
Half the class would do it on Roxanne the other half on red
My dog was named after that song. We called her Roxy. She died about 3 years ago
The secret policemans ball a Monty python style movie. Check out stings solo. Wow.
Probably has something to do with playing along to Steward Copeland in a studio
If Andy (Sting) couldn't play it right I'm person, it's undoubtedly because he was stoned out of his Gourd. I've seen several interviews with him before/after/during concerts and it may just as have well been Jeff Spicolli talking... 😆

Roxanne a worldwide hit in 1979, where were you to not hear it?
UNDER A LOG!!
I think we can learn from Andy of Pro Guitar Shop's tutorial video
I need the tee shirt in the back
I’m pretty sure on the record version Andy summers used all up strokes
This guy just hypes up unimportant things in songs to seem like an expert.
And then doesn’t do it right
Awesome Dead Milkmen shirt

I always thought it was up strokes
The tape in the record changes speeds while the intro plays
Similar to Amen in Chord progression 🙏
That is hard!!! I can do that in my sleep
Rocks sand
Close, but nope
That looks like Jerry Larson cow in the background on that shirt
I wonder what happened in all those other timelines

Third chord is Ebmaj7 hes just not playing the bass note
Try doing upstrokes instead of downstrokes. It should be like hitting reggae chords in a reggae song,
Sounds spot on!
Bless you
Yeah dude, they had serious touch...
You f …up at the end bro !
Damn that's a sexy ass guitar
Wow.. yes! You got it 😉👏👏
You almost nailed it
i think its the studio compressor at work in the album
Great!
Think about when it was recorded though. The real secret is getting just the right amount of coke in each nostril before starting off.
The Richards ratio
@@DJCALFOREVER You just can't overdo it lest you wind up like poor Stevie Nicks takin it up the backroads after she wore her nose out.

I always thought it was upstrokes
I wondered that too, but I watched a video of Andy summers and he’s playing it with down strokes
It’s like he’s partially palm muting to limit the sustain that much more. It seems like it rings out too much with the reverb if you don’t.
You need to pick up not down, that will help with the snap
Now do the Richie Blackmore Solo from Highway Star
They have a few very different songs on guitar harder than you think even Every breath you take is a stretch on the fingers
Eddie was like a black dude, singing like a white dude, trying to sing reggae rock. Not for commercial reasons you understand.
They played it different live for a reason. Pay attention, teacher....
I would be embarrassed to admit that was the first time hearing Roxanne...
Your videos keep popping up in my feed. You seem like a good dude. I would say your guitar skills are maybe moderate. Keep playing and you'll improve
