- Many of us wish we knew more about the people who came before us but delay or avoid sharing what matters most in our own lives-what we have learned, value, regret, yearn for, believe, and love. A Life Letter says it all and is an enduring gift to ourselves, our communities, and our loved ones today and over time. A Life Letter can be handwritten, typed, or spoken aloud. It can be a few pages or more, just not a book-length autobiography. A modern twist on the ancient practice of ethical wills or legacy letters, the Life Letter can be used to clarify legal estate documents and convey the “why” behind decisions and giving.
Research shows that resilient, multi-generational families who stay together during hard and good times value the kind of connection, growth and learning that a Life Letter conveys far more than the tangible assets passed down. Your life matters. Your story matters. Sharing your words connects the generations and allows you to live with greater purpose and well-being today.
Nancy Sharp is an author, storyteller, speaker, and Life Letters coach. She is passionate about helping others share meaningful life experiences as a legacy for loved ones and to foster greater resilience, well-being, and purpose today. Hard-won wisdom led Nancy on this path, as told in her award-winning memoir Both Sides Now: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Bold Living. Nancy holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction and has been published in several essay anthologies; articles, essays, columns, and letters of hers have appeared in The New York Times, AARP’s The Ethel, Next Avenue, The Huffington Post, and elsewhere. She has guest lectured at the Lighthouse Writers Workshop, The New School, and New York's 92nd Street Y. Nancy works with corporate and nonprofit groups large and small, as well as private clients. A certified instructor in Guided Autobiography, Nancy teaches storytelling and Life Letters workshops online, and at numerous events and retreats. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Why did I just write two pages yesterday with my thoughts with all my values and regrets and aspirations and then this gets uploaded? This gave me chills 🥶
Serendipity!
Beautifully said! I now think differently about what it means to leave a legacy, thank you Nancy.

I’m 71 years old, single, no kids… have a very good portfolio… not sure what to do with my money…
What are your passions? Find a way to pass your legacy on through that. If you’re into helping kids, community, and health, lmk. ❤
why worry , cant take with you -. 71 years must hv given you at least some lessons or wisdom to look around and find something or someone worthy of your help
Find a cause you believe in or find a family that would put it to good use. There are lots of young families with aspirations and strong work ethic, but that are still lacking the means to make productive steps.
Invest in something that will be life changing for someone else or a group of people. E.g. Buy a school for kids or just invest in a project you have a passion for 👍
Siblings? Cousins? Nieces or Nephews? Family is more than just kids. And then there are friends... High school or college buddies? Some of them might be struggling right now...

My life won't matter alive or dead. My children and grandchildren don't even talk to me now.
That doesn't mean your life doesn't matter.
@@leaf842, okay, I will rephrase what I said....."I feel that my life doesn't matter because I no longer matter to the people I love."
Sorry you have this experience. Donate something to a charity or cause you love. They'll appreciate your gift.
You matter. Without you, there would be no grandkids! Whether you’re in touch or not, you make a difference. ❤
@@CoachLove, that won't work for me. I have very limited resources. Must take care of me first. $10.00 can make a negative life changing difference in my life. So nothing goes out to anything but basic essentials. If you can't understand that then be glad you are in your world.
