- Hey Horse Lovers! THE DAY HAS FINALLY COME!!!! I WILL OFFICALLY BE RIDING MUSHU my beautiful Gypsy Vanner for the first time today. Mushu is a registered, imported Gypsy Vanner from England. He is Hermit Cob (bloodlines) and comes from a fantastic place overseas. He is now 4 years old, 14hh, and ready to be put to the test! HAHA! I will be showing you how I go about introducing him to under saddle work and showing the entire process. I will also give you some tips, tricks, and ideas when it comes to working with young horses and preparing them for their first ride. He did so good for the first time. He's so calm. He really trusts you and is a testament to the bond you have with him. You're a great trainer and move at your horses pace unlike other trainers who want the horse to move at their pace.

Now that is how i like a first ride to go. No worries, no sillies just taking it all in his next step stride. Of course he is a perfect special boy 🥰but you can have some of the praise for preparing him so thoroughly and patiently. He seems to love being with you and trying to please.😁

@@freespiritequestrian Ha, yes, poor you. Green horse's seldom makes their riders look good; even pro's. He's got to figure his balance and what you are doing. I think it shows your faith in him using a brand new saddle too. Most trainers would be too worried about damage. I'd have been a bit distracted as it was wearing in, settling and shifting. You did well ignoring all that and concentrating on mushu. I'm interested to hear how the fit progresses as the flocking settles and whether it will need tweaking; back to the maker?. Our big barrel no wither gypsy cobs are quite hard to fit for saddles and likely he'll change more as he gets more muscle from being a ridden horse. Super cosy bareback though.

Mushu looks beautiful after his whole body clip. Love his coloring and of course his mustache! I had never ridden a draft, shire type or a vanner, always had quater horses and arab/quarter crosses. My friend called me over to her place one day and said she had a surprise. It was a HUGE beautiful draft type horse, so long ago now I can't remember what breed or mix of breeds he was. I watched her ride him and I thought wow, that looks so smooth and comfy from the ground anyway. Then she said, come on, you try him out. I was a bit intimidated thinking what if he takes over with his strength and I end up on the ground! Nothing like that even hinted at . It was like the difference in riding in an economy size car and in a luxury car like a Mercedes or Lexus. Smooth, wonderful, even at a trot, it was like floating, no jarring at all. We even later took him on trail up a mountain preserve nearby and again, I tried him out. Moving from my Quarter horse to this big guy showed the comfort difference immediately. Loved it so much. So I assume this Vanner cross is much the same.

Shae, I nearly laughed seeing Mushu trot. He is a chonky boy and his front end looked kinda disconnected from his rear as he tried to coordinate everything. How cute! I suspected the saddle needed adjusting when you first put it on him -- but then I'll bed they all need a bit of tweaking. Mushu was such a good boy! You look like you're trying to straddle a hippo in the front-on shots! How cute is that?!! Wahoo! 🤠🐴🧡🧡🧡

So happy to see my favorite of your horses, Mushu, is doing so well! I was wondering how he's been since his buddy Buzz went to a new home. Looks like he's got a lot to think about now that he's just getting started with saddle work. And of course, he's such a wonderful guy that he was doing his best. This was by far the most "serious" I've seen him -- no hamming it up for the camera like he frequently does, but his good attitude is still obvious. I love that little guy!
I am not from the horse world, so seeing how horses are trained in an optimal situation such as yours, Shea (as opposed to old tv westerns, where they get "broke" by a cowboy who essentially wears them down and dominates them...and then the horse somehow magically knows what's expected of them by the next scene), is a totally new concept to me. Thank you so much for explaining that they have to actually figure out what it is that you're trying to get them to do. It never occurred to me somehow, but now it seems so obvious that even with all the lunge work, etc., you and the horse are still speaking two distinct languages and getting on the same page takes a lot of work from both of you! It really makes me respect the effort that YOU put into it (all 5-foot-nothing of you!) and how you make it look nearly effortless! I stumbled upon one of your videos entirely by chance, but I'm a true fan now! (And starting to feel again like I did as a 10-yr-old when I was IN LOVE with horses...but "outgrew" it just like everyone said I would.)

The Gypsy horse is a bred I would consider buying! Was raised with Hunter/jumpers and Quarter Horses. This is where I learned to care for leather and brass. My Dad hated dirty leather (saddles, reins, etc., and bites and brass) and lived to a clean tack room. In our family the animals (horses, ponies, steer, cat, dogs and raccoon) because we brought to our house! Family. To me, there is no better smell then a clean stable/barn and tack room.

I can never get over his little mustache! He did so well! I cannot believe he is 4 years old already! I was wondering how Ezzy would react to seeing Mushu. So cute!
I got launched off a baby I was starting. Was using my Pass ier dressage saddle. Left me quite shaken. I called about getting an Australian stock saddle. Colin Dangaard, owner of outback saddle co. answered the phone. I explained the situation. He hesitated, then asked me "Are you INSANE?! That's A G. D. LAUNCHING PAD! I told him I figured that out (I was seriously hurt), and that's why I was calling. That stock saddle, a Somerset Poley, was the best saddle ever. Great if you needed to ride something with a buck to it, great for hacking and trails. Also super for insecure riders. I gave my to a handicapped riding organization. Seeing you starting Mushu in that (new!) jumping saddle reminded me of my flight off of Navarre, a 17.3 TB/Clyde cross. It hurt. Hygs to good boy Mushu ❤

I'm definitely the camp for riding every sort of horse and pony available to you (within reason). I consider this to be the reason why, alright, my riding style isn't exactly super refined, but I'm super adaptable to what the horse or pony responds well to, needs guidance through or even just riding through in the event of spooks and tantrums (Yeah... one mare that was sweeter than sugar in summer would be an absolute nightmare in winter; even the paid instructors tried not to ride her! I rode her most in the winter and as a baby at 4, they weren't spooks, she was very deliberate in trying to get out of the work.)
I also rode a very wide gypsy cob. Hopefully Mushuu turns into one like him... albeit a bit smaller. This cob was super hary and 95% of the time, a super safe ride. He HAD actually come from a hunting background and was gelded later at about 7. I think he retained a bit of a spark for jumping, especially with the right rider.
It was absolute riots when I got to ride him for jumping, while slightly taller at 15.1hh, I usually rode him in jumping lessons with Thoroughbred x sportshorses and warmbloods. My instructor thought it was absolutely hilarious because he absolutely LOVED it. He'd jump up to 3 foot effortlessly and it was honestly hard to keep him in check to get a good stride.
And.... well I don't know how Mushuu is, hopefully similar, but this horse was a literal armchair ride. He's the smoothest horse I've ever ridden.

Lovely first ride! When the day comes that you decide to move him on, .....he will be a FABULOUS family horse/pet! Under your training Mushu will become "bomb proof" and be a wonderful safe animal for children, seniors and handicapped people to ride. He would be a perfect candidate for a Therapy Program.
