Dog has curious encounter with seal pup

- A pet owner and his curious cockapoo encountered a seal pup that had been washed up on Bridlington beach, UK, on March 14.
Footage filmed by Dave Naughton shows the moment he and his dog Ted came across the marine mammal.
Naughton told Newsflare: "As we strolled along the sand, we noticed a small, stranded seal lying on the beach.
"At first, we weren't sure what to do. We knew that stranded marine animals needed help, but I didn't have any experience with rescuing wildlife. But Ted seemed to sense my hesitation and nudged me with his nose as if he was urging me to take action.
"Together, we approached the seal and assessed its condition. It looked weak and disoriented, and we knew that it needed immediate attention. I called the local marine rescue centre and explained the situation.
"As we waited for help to arrive, I and Ted stayed with the seal, keeping it calm and shaded from the hot sun. Ted even entertained the seal with his playful antics, chattering and flapping his ears to make it smile.
"Finally, the rescue team arrived and assessed the seal's condition. They carefully lifted it onto a stretcher and took it to their facility for treatment and rehabilitation.
"As I and Ted watched the rescue team drive away with the seal, we felt a sense of satisfaction and gratitude. We had made a difference in the life of a stranded marine animal, and Ted had played an important role in helping to keep it calm and relaxed."

In my country, department of conservation requests dogs to be on leads and to keep way back away from pups to reduced their stress. Especially during times when they are being weaned from their mum and they’re often exhausted from trying to find food for first time by themselves and just need a sleep on the beach to recover.

I walk beaches often if I see a seal pup sleeping, as I continue to walk I politely warn dog owners they are approaching a pup. They say “thank you” and use their brains and put their dogs on leads. It’s not that hard. Let them rest, they need it.
So its your fault then. You were no where to be found and did not warn this man and his dog and that is the reason this seal pup got brutally attacked by that vicious Labradoodle type dog. You should be ashamed of yourself.

He is recently not anymore with his mom and need to hunt alone for his food and was surely exhausted from it and needed a sleep. Another sad part is that seal can drown in water from exhaustion even if they are water animal... the excuse of " I did not know" is not really great when the consequence is the potential death of another living being. I would respect more the person who say that he does not care that it die than the one who lack knowledge cause it is not the job of other to educate people like I did.

The baby was evidently separated from his family. Seals come to shore to rest. As kind as that look to send them back into the water if he was really tired he could just round. Perhaps leaving nature alone would be the best idea. Thank you for keeping your dog away from it.

@@kilisloe3474 I disagree. I've seen too many instances of dogs disrespecting the space of larger animals too (horses, bison, kangaroos, etc) and getting hurt. Unless the dog is trained and can be easily recalled, it really isn't a good idea to let them loose in certain places.

Dog wasn’t tormenting the pup. He was curious and rather polite and dog didn’t force seal back to water. He chose to go back.

You can’t agree with me about that but surely you can agree that the dog wasn’t aggressive, wasn’t barking or trying to attack the seal? Not only this but this particular breed , doesn’t have aggression in them. Just like my Irish red setter. Head not very tall but is very long and a decent wedge of a dog and he gets scared by tiny dogs that go for him. I’d totally understand you being angry if the dog attacked the seal. I’d also be angry because I’m an absolute animal lover . Animals and wildlife is my biggest passion in life. I only have a few passions and wildlife and animals in general are the biggest.

Rule of thumb, always keep your dogs in control on the beach and never let them approach Aquatic Life. It's a respect thing.✌️

Yeah the seal was terrified because a dog sniffed him because the dog had never even seen a seal before. If this little guy was terrified from a curious dog then he probably has full blown depression and PTSD seeing an Orca murdering his entire family.

The point is that it was stressed/disturbed into returning into the sea, where the number one risk for it seems to be exhaustion (harassing seals is an offense in the UK btw, as both seal species present there are protected).
Here’s what I found on a marine research website, about seal energy expenditure (the reason why tired young seals need more rest on land and can easily die in the water:
“The presence, activity or certain human behaviors near seals can be a source of disturbance and in particular cause flight or defense behavior. The energetic impact can then be considerable (the seal returns to the water and expends energy to swim and thermoregulate while it was in the resting phase). Repeatedly, these situations which cause additional stress can have very negative consequences, especially for already weakened animals. During the breeding season, disturbance can also cause mother-young couples to separate, leaving the young alone, which is generally fatal.”

There’s a Lot of seals in Southern California...they come and go on and off the beaches. They have flippers but can walk in and out of the water when they want to. That baby was A-ok, they’re not like Dolphins or whales.
