    The bee video is still so cool to me. The fact there's no swelling means the bee is consciously not injecting venom. It means if you're patient and you let the bee remove itself you end up with less pain than if you tried to smack or squish it. So neat.

    • @pijcab
      @pijcab Před rokem +98

      Dunno about conscious l’d guess it's more a of a mechanical thing. I remember reading the venom being inside the stinger, so it's probably like holding water inside a straw the moment u release the other side it flows which would equate to the stinger breaking or detaching from bee (with its intestins).

    • @ndnm819
      @ndnm819 Před rokem +20

    For the halo around the shadow at 1:28. It seems that the pavement happens to reflect more light back towards the source, rather than diffuse it evenly. So the pavement is mostly reflecting the light of the sun back towards the direction of the sun.
    So the light that goes into the camera that gives the image of a halo is bouncing off the pavement from the sun, and going straight back, which will surround the shadow of the person (as in this case, the phone filming is in line with the sun, person, and shadow).
    If the person moved the camera to the side, the halo would surround the shadow of the camera on video, not the shadow of the person. Although with his own eyes the person will still see the halo around his shadow himself.

    Your shadow's halo is made by something called "back scattering." This happens whenever sunlight enters a dewdrop. The sunbeam enters the front of the drop, then a certain amount of light bounces off the back. This light streams back out the front, almost exactly in the direction it came from.

    As a beekeeper, I've seen this behavior plenty of times when I've cared for my bees, but I have my reservations about the bee "changing its mind". Whenever they've decided to sting, it is because they either defend themselves in the field, or the hive if you're close to it and they consider you a threat.
    Bees have no problem dying for the hive, because they as individuals don't matter. One must not think of a beehive as thousands of individual bees, but a sort of "superorganism". The only thing that matters is that the hive and the queen (the only individual to actually matter) survive. One bee's life is meaningless.
    Indeed, just to make the honey you put in your tea, hundreds of bees have died in the field, be that as prey, exposure, starvation, or simply their wings being worn out.

    This morning, I was having breakfast with a friend outside and a bee just decided to come and chill with us. Stayed with us for the 30 to 40 minutes we spent there. Tried to get in my coffee a couple times, but I gently pushed it away every time so that it wouldn't burn nor drown itself, and every time it would come back and hang by the side of my cup or on my finger.
    These lil guys are amazing if you just chill with them and don't make them feel threatened.

      I remember once there was one stuck on the bus into town, and I felt bad for the poor thing constantly flying into the window, so I calmly guided it to an open window and let it out, and it actually stopped for a second as if to say thanks before flying off. I think bees are more intelligent than people think. It's like any other creature, if you approach it calmly, it will know that you're not a threat.

    Love the video, thank you for making this one! Just one piece of information. The bee doesn't necessarily apologize when it does this. The sting gets stuck in the multiple layers of our skin. By flying away the bee will rip off it's own sting and possibly/likely die from the injury. So it is more likely that the bee was trying to safe itself having realized this, which is still pretty neat if you ask me.

    0:03 Just FYI: Bees don't actually "change their mind" about stinging someone. "Everybody knows" that bees die after stinging, but that's not actually true. It's only after stinging humans (and a few other animals with a similar skin type). Our skin just happens to have the right combination of elasticity and stiffness to trap the stinger, meaning it gets ripped out when the bee flies away, killing it. And even then, it only happens in about 80% of stings; in the other 20%, the bee successfully pulls out its stinger and flies away unharmed (as demonstrated in this video).
    1:26 Actually, there's *always* a halo around your (sun) shadow, about where your eyes (or the lens of the camera) would be, but it's just not bright enough to notice on most surfaces. It's caused by the fact that most materials will reflect light back in the general direction of the source more strongly than in any other direction, and since your eye is directly between the sun and the shadow, you see that light.

    Seems like it's mostly about stinger depth. I've had 'full' guts ripped out stings that aren't deep enough and half stings that swell pretty bad. If I get the chance I'll try to flick the whole bee off with my hive tool/knife, preserving the bee. If you freak out and use your hands or something not sharp you'll near 100% get a guts ripped out sting that will swell.
