Oh yeah, changing the whole system huh? No. Because the system HASNT changed and it’s in more trouble currently than it EVER has been because we are passing and graduating students with this SAME EXACT PROBLEM!!! Reading, writing, math levels all below grade level 4. Maybe look into what’s going on Baltimore RIGHT NOW and finding out that 75% of graduating seniors couldn’t pass the state wide test MADE FOR FIFTH GRADERS. And they’re hardly the only district facing these issues. Kids are in 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade and aren’t potty trained. They can’t sit still long enough to learn simple math and reading and are just being passed because of no child left behind. We are currently in the most technological advanced phase in history and churning out adults who won’t know how to count to 10 without their fingers, they can’t tell time, they don’t know who the first president was, they can’t fathom how math and science work, how very simple things work. It’s not a joke- we are currently 25% lower for our average IQ than in our ENTIRE HISTORY. That’s AVERAGE IQ meaning that there’s plenty of people who are much dumber than that. We currently have more mentally ill, autistic, adhd etc people than has ever been recorded. Ask yourself how it’s now 2 in 5 people have one of these or a mixture of these things that used to affect less than 1% of the ENTIRE population on earth- ENTIRE POPULATION. That means it’s now increasing at a rate of 38% a year now in order to be 2 in 5 against the current world population. And I would bet 90% of people who read that, don’t understand how to calculate statistics so don’t understand how you find that number.
You should be worried and stop believing in the fantasy of feel good movies. SMH.

@@bradenharris8718 wow Braden, it's crazy how you make such an insanely long comment and completely missed the context. Obviously this is a movie. So it doesn't directly translate to real life, so you need to chill...also this movie is in the context of the teacher teaching homeless kids, so it has nothing to do with your regular youth in the United states. I'm sure that you know a lot about it and yes it's a problem, but aside from talking statistics, what do you propose that anyone does to solve the issue? What do YOU do to help the problem? Or do you just like to complain about shit online every single time that you have the chance?

My Dad had no real education, before he ran away and signed up for service during WW2 he was 14 and a tall lad for his age and able to conceal his true age for the next few years and into the Korean conflict. When he got back to Canada 🍁 and met his love of his life, Mom a part of veterans care hospital were they met. Dad had about a grade 4 education but he had been given a blessing because Mom had been teaching in the village where she grew up in. And as all us came along he would do homework and lessons with us all and he would go on to be a crossword fanatic scrabble in English and French. And then numerically he could see the numbers as monetary fractions could add subtract multiply divide columns upon columns without a mistake. And his hand writing still gives me a glow in my heart that his writing was like a swans grace it was so beautiful flowing and I have never seen anyone else that could match it. Not even calligraphy could compare it was that beautiful.

It would mean that the school system failed you if they allowed you to pass out of school without having those skills. I find it highly admirable that anybody can be illiterate in this day and age and managed to survive when reading and writing or so necessary to survival. Clearly they are far from dumb because they definitely managed to hide the fact that they cannot read or write and still survive still hold a job still provide for their families. Nobody should ever be ashamed of not being able to read and write and everybody around them who knows they can't should help them as much as possible to learn those skills.
Again I highly admire anybody who can survive in the world without those skills period to be able to do so is a great accomplishment

Pop was only able to pass 11th grade as the 12th grade English teacher hated him, so he failed in her class twice, married Mom at 20 and her only 15. She and he raised 5 kids, adopted one and she home schooled the last. That one went to college beside two of their grandchildren, my Son and Nephew. Now my Granddaughter is in college, and doing well. And we still respect his Silver Star from the Air Force. He didn't need a degree to get that.

I remember my late grandma. She can cook rice cakes of all sorts, can cook the best meals I know...but can count money, read and even write in cursive but in a slower phase. Can sign her name slowly. She didn't get the chance to have a formal education but she's the best mother figure I ever had. No shame on my own mother, but my grandma has always been gentle. I miss her so much.😢 She died at 83. 😢

This is such a powerful lesson. If we offer help. Encourage the person with kind words and reminders of why its important such as it helps your children if you can read. And letting the person know that you will match their efforts and will be there for them. The reason we have such a hard time getting through to people usually is because we can't see that they are struggling and sometimes that means they will lash out. Fighting fire with fire just causes an out of control fire so if we take a breath and remember to be kind, give them some grace and continue to encourage them to take our hand so we can help them we can actually make differences in all our lives. Honestly it would even allow for those who don't care or don't want to be bothered by difficult people or stupid people to have a "better" - easier and more efficient life. Because these people would be reached and able to function better meaning there would be less difficult people. I say that because at the end of the day if the intentions are wrong but the actions make the world a better place its not that bad and definitely better than staying ignorant and continuing the vicious cycle those people are in.

My grandfather was a block Mason for 40+ years. He provided for his family and he is the funniest and most humble man you could come across. He was never taught to read because he had to leave school in elementary to help the family run their truck farm. That's why he had such amazing work ethic. People are on here criticizing something they REALLY know nothing about. My well read grandmother could have taught him to read. Some people prefer to leave others ignorant for the sake of their own gain. Or he was just not at all interested. He made great money and never wanted for anything. Because he made sure with his own hands to literally build a life, along with building much of Columbus, Ohio. Why bother reading?

It's great your grandaddy was okay not reading but firstly that doesn't work in modern day and secondly being kept ignorant or being willfully ignorant is the saddest existence you can lead
Knowledge is a beautiful thing although no one should EVER be shamed for not being able to read EVERYONE should have the opportunity and everyone should be able to so they can seek their own knowledge and views of the world

reading is essential. it’s not possible in modern day to succeed without reading. my grandparents couldn’t read either and had to rely on their children to decode basic paperwork. my grandfather managed to build a house and support a large family, but couldn’t fill out hospital paperwork when my mother got sick as a child. your grandfather did well, so did mine - but that’s an exception not the rule.

So people won't take advantage of you. Knowledge is power. There's no shame if somebody doesn't know how to read. That's not their fault that they weren't taught as a kid. Now as an adult in control of your life, to willingly choose not to learn something is staying ignorant.
If you can't read a contract, you don't know if the terms and conditions are in your favor or out to trick you and put you at a disadvantage. There are evil people who will take advantage of your ignorance. They can lie to you something means something because how would you know any better? This doesn't diminish any of your grandfather's accomplishments. He sounds like an amazing person otherwise you wouldn't be so proud of him. But please do not belittle the importance of reading.

I planned with the 14 people and came up and set up school and facilities after much pressure to the govt.

She was leading some Sunday school/Bible study class of other adults and proposed that everyone would read aloud. Someone pulled her aside after and said she probably shouldn't do that as it embarrasses the people who couldn't read. Blew my mom away. This was a group of modern day adults (it was the late 70s) how could they not have learned to read by the time they were adults?! So yeah, don't assume everyone your age has had your level of education!

I was 12 before I realised my grandfather couldn't read.Unbelievably,he'd somehow managed to hide it his entire life- my grandmother had apparently known but she had died long before Ii was born.He could scrawl his signature but couldn't write anything else.My four year old little brother was learning to read before he went to school so I borrowed his books in secret then sat with my lovely grandpa.I know now there are books more suitable for adult learners but I had no idea then.He lived in the next street so I saw him every day.-he minded myself and my brother until my parents finished work at 6pm.Once he had the basics of the alphabet,he caught on very quickly although my "teaching"method probably left lots to be desired-I just made it up as I went along.Of course,it was secret but occasionally, when at my own home and he came round,he'd remark on something written, such as a birthday card, saying that's a lovely card from Jack.By the time I was fourteen,he was an avid reader and able to read whole adult books-he practically lived at the library.I never told anyone-no one knows to this day-but he lived for another thirty seven years with a completely new outlook on life.

An inspiring true story is that of Ben Carson the surgeon who ran for president. His own mother could not read. He and his brother were unaware as she made them recite their homework daily and redo it if it didn’t sound right…..instilled a work ethic and learning ethos that is often missing today. I believe she did eventually go back to school and now has a masters or doctorate. Her encouragement gave him the fortitude to keep pushing and never believe he would not succeed.
