Tier Harribel is one of the more mysterious Arrancar in the series and unfortunately never received a backstory in the canon manga. However, the anime would later fix this and give us an entire episode dedicated to her and the Tres Bestias, living in Hueco Mundo. In this video we take a look at that backstory and how it helped shape Harribel and her aspect of death - Sacrifice.

Wait, so her aspect was death clearer? I thought it was sacrifice or sg like that. But overall, well designed character and good history of her.
It's great that she and her Fraccion survived their misfortunes and are making peace in Hueco Mundo their goal.
Ironic that the media which censored her design is also the place where is is most fleshed out!
That made me think now. If they did her back story in anime, are they going to toy with Aizen in future? I am kinda conflicted on that, where can they go? I mean all we have are few lines of Ichigo after he defeats Aizen, basically pointing out how he was searching for someone similar to him... And ofc he says that to Urahara, which make sense since they are two opposite side of coin. But i don't know.. I'm kinda afraid they gonna fuck it up, you know what i mean? But then again, i can't say Kubo failed at showing Aizen in TYBW , everything Aizen did, was Aizen like... I am not sure my dear gentle Tommo, i am not sure...
Halibel is my favorite Espada. I'm glad the anime gave her an actual backstory because it made her so much more interesting. Her backstory fits her perfectly since she represents the Sacrifice aspect of death. The anime made Aizen betraying Halibel even more tragic because I got the sense that while Halibel is an antagonist, she still has some redeeming qualities. She deeply cares about her Fraccion and Halibel ruling Hueco Mundo makes perfect sense to me.
With all the new Bleach related materials coming out I hope we get a glimpse of Harribel and her Fraccion running Las Noches with Nel and a calming Grimmjow. It's been a while since we've seen the Hollow survivors of the Aizen and Yhwach conflicts.

Her parst is tragic yet heartwarming, stuck in a kill or be killed yet she made an effort to subvert that while rescuing the ladies who would become her Fraccion. It makes their double survival at Fake Karakura and the TYBW all the more triumphant and more so since they are turning Las Noches into a peaceful sanctuary.

I loveeee Halibel Shes honestly underrated. Not only having a cool design but also surviving against Aizen and Yhwach was dope. Hopefully she gets to appear more in TYBW when the anime comes.

It's ironic how many parallels there are between Ichigo and Harribel. Both are extremely dangerous fighters who generally dislike killing, use a giant greatsword that fires ranged attacks, have three weaker allies that they fight alongside, and tend to try to sacrifice themselves to protect those around them.
*Harribel could've been the Hero* of her own story, honestly. I wish we could've gotten more from her

This backstory and stuff like the Menos Forest filler is super appreciated, as it painted Hueco Mundo as not a place of total chaos (like Hell), but this eerie and somberly beautiful place.
Hopefully the anime will give us more content on other parts of the world, like the lands where the Beasts like Komamura lived in and the secret societies of the Quincies (which would be a nice parallel to the Bounts' societies and I'd like to see Anime Ishida learn more about it).
I respect the thumbnail design choice for this video. You have easily tailored it to a sexy photo of Harribel but instead, you chose a more dignified image of her. I notice that you do that often in your thumbnails. It may not always get the maximum amount of views but it's way more respectful to both the audience and the character itself. Thanks for doing this.
I just liked how she called out Tokinada and his destructive plans in CFYOW when part of Shunsui's improvised alliance as he ridiculed her philosophy on sacrifice and Hollow's primal hunger. It illustrates her concept of noble sacrifice vs Tokinada's want of war just to slate his nihilism. Night and day.
I wish she could have had more of a relationship with Hitsugaya, beyond just a water vs ice battle.
It really could have been a great battle of ideology between the two of them and their leadership styles and which one is superior.
It would have been so cool if through Hitsugaya sacrificing himself for his teammates, it gave Kira enough time to heal Hinamori and Matsumoto who comes to Hitsugaya's rescue to distract Harribel and give those two characters more time to shine.
And finally, Hitsugaya releases his ultimate ice attack to defeat her. Through preserving the life of his allies, Hitsugaya was able to defeat her.
I was really glad that Harribel got fleshed out a bit, even though she’s underrated. Her and her fraccion are my most favorites in the Arrancar arc, cause I love them a lot and I’m glad Kubo brought them to life. I’m thinking about creating a fanfic story involving Harribel and her fraccion.
Shouldn't the nurse looking hollow that was with Baraggan (before Aizen took over) been Vosto Lord level? She was complet human girl with a hollow mask on. This is why the Vosto Lords having human shaps is kinda off. The funny thing is she could have been a Vosto Lord but just didn't do anything accepte stand there and watch her master Baraggan get Blitz by Aizen.
In can't fear your own world novel some ancient hollow ask if harribel and nel are one of barragan's consort. So I think he have few of them as his mistress too

Momma was putting in that work, had no time to chill. But that the name of the game lol. Loved this video, she is a very special character to me. Great video. She’s one of my fav Espada. I like the little bit of backstory the anime gives us but wish we had a bit more. And a bit more of what happened to her after the Aizen stuff and even stuff after the Quincy. If we get more hell stuff maybe we’ll see her and her fracion again

Harribel is my favorite character, the only thing I didn't like about her backstory was that the arrancar she fought wasn't even an Espada. Bleach's greatest sin was nerfing the hollows significantly while boosting both shinigami and quincy to ridiculous highs, Vasto Lordes were hyped to be captain level upon introduction but even arrancarized ones were unable to defeat any non-vizard ones.
The power level inconsistency soured my view of Bleach for years but at least Harribel survived which left me hopeful that she and Nelliel will have some role in the future.
I mean, it would be darn cool if Barragan and Nnoitra returned from hell to attack Hueco Mundo but Harribel and Nelliel defeated them with a cool power up that establishes the new order over the old one. It would not just symbolically mean that hollows entered a new era but that they won't let their new peace be taken by past tyrants.

I like Tier Harribel and her Fraccion, and I enjoyed the anime backstory for these characters. I do consider the anime backstory as canon and I think that Tier Harribel was cheated in the manga. Tier Harribel is not shown surviving the battle of karakura town and her last appearance in the manga was her being captured by the quincy. Tier Harribel isn't even shown surviving the thousand year blood war arc, and neither are the tres bestias. It just feels unfair to Tier Harribel and her Fraccion. At least the anime gave Tier Harribel and her Fraccion a good backstory that shows how the four female arrancar became a team and ended up joining Aizen's team. I hope that the bleach anime expands on what happened to Tier Harribel and her Fraccion when the anime returns.
It would be great if the new hell arc gives us more backstory on Starrk, Barragan, and others who we way see again in hell.

What gets me in these discussions are power levels in Hueco Mundo. Vastrolordes are supposed to be super powerful and stronger than Captains. Yet Harribel was defeated by a plain arrancar (of course we can argue that the arrancar could have been Espada-level, but base Vastrolorde should still have put up a better fight since the base Hollow of the Arrancar wasn’t a Vastrolorde).
The entire Arrancar arc was building up so well but seemingly left Hueco Mundo incredibly weak. I mean Barragan, the king prior to Aizen wasn’t even taken out by a top tier Captain.
This and the Vaizards having a pathetic showing (unlike the Quincy, who posed a true threat to SS) were Kubo’s wasted moment from an otherwise perfect sequel to the Aizen arc.
Still love Bleach though.
I never noticed the symmetry between Aizen and Ywach. They both have power with the intention of turning on the recipient. Both sort of okayed the devil role.

Would you consider doing a video on why Ichigo when he first used his Bankai again Byakuya his speed was so OP and then after the 2nd half of that battle he never displayed anything like that again. It seems like compressing energy into small and incredibly fast/strong moves is so OP he could have won a lot of fights a lot more easily if he had kept up that strategy.
She’s def one of my top 3 favorite espada She’s so cool and badass and stylish. She was a girls girl and only accepted Aizens proposal so she could be strong enough to protect her friends. She obviously wasn’t a bad guy. I’m really glad she survived and I reallly thought this backstory was so well done it was really good.
Tsun-Sun Was My Favorite Character Design. Both Arrancar And Pre. The Snake Aesthetic I Dig And Her Sai Weapon Is Actually Pretty Cool. I Imagine Her Being Able To Fire 3 Cero From It Like Hiyori Can Do. The Female Arrancar Always Seem To Have Some Unexpected Ability They Use To Get One Over On Potential Opponents; Like Nels' Cero Double, Or Ayon From The Tres Beastias. But I Loved Hallibels Backstory As It Was Fitting For Her To Be Pious Enough To Not Use Other Souls To Increase Her Strength.

It was actually kind of jarring reading the manga after only knowing the anime for so long and seeing that hali bel had no backstory whatsoever.
To even imply that the anime isn't canon is kinda stupid bc Kubo was involved in making it and obviously meant by him to be canon. He has a chance to make more canon,embrace it. :)

Kubo did say that the anime studio did liberties that he didn't like. But he was given scripts at times and only approves ones that he liked, which is why I want to believe that Haribel's backstory is canon.
This is actually the only episode listed as Anime-Canon. And a really good one at that.

I assume the hammer-head arrancar is in his released form. He has no Zanpakuto that we can see, and he appears to be "wearing" his original hollow look. Perhaps he was sent on a mission by Aizen to locate other powerful menos to recruit and instead took the opportunity to assault Halibel and her group. I actually wonder if he was an early generation Espada.
Regardless, Halibel managed to hold her own against and even wound a presumably mid-level Arrancar who was likely in a released state (I doubt it was a low level Arrancar due to the sole fact that he was already an Adjucas and was altered by the Hogyoku around the same time Barragan was... Assuming of course Barragan was altered by the Hogyoku)
We have to remember that even Gillian Arrancar such as Shawlong were capable threats against Vice-Captain and Captain level Shinigami, and only lost as easily as they did due to being caught off guard.

I've always disliked this backstory. The Gotei believed Vasto Lorde were Captain-level threats even prior to Aizen. That a fraccion, even as an arrancar, would be able to fight Harribel just seems forced to flushout her sacrifice symbolism. I'm glad the anime gave Harribel more screentime, but it just seems off to me.
Well, the Hammerhead Menos Harribel fought was an Adjuchas, so him turning into an Arrancar was probably enough of a power boost for Harribel to misjudge his abilities and start the battle on the back foot.
Harribel always struck me as a level headed, well rounded fighter, so I can imagine she approached every fight with a strategy to preserve not only herself but also her Fraccion, whom she had to protect during this fight as well.
But yeah, I agree that maybe she should have beaten the hammerhead guy but suffered a bunch of damage still. Possibly defeating him, turning her back but oh no he's still barely hanging and ready to backstab her, but in comes Aizen to rescue her...
According to a website that tells you what episodes of an anime are filler, mixed, or anime only canon, the only anime only canon episode of bleach is the episode with Halibel's backstory.
I like the back story, but I actually don't like her vasto lorde design. She doesn't have a hollow hole and I feel like the mask looks like an overly simplified version of her arrancar mask. I also feel like her mask should cover her entire face. To me she honestly looks like she's wearing a suit rather than being an actual hollow.
I think Aizen didn't give an especially fleshed out speech to the hammerhead arrancar. He probably just offered him power and possibly revenge. That guy was doomed because Aizen wanted to force Harribel into a corner for their meeting IMO.

Several notes:
1. I assume that this is canon. Kubo reviewed the scripts, and for this, I assume he probably scripted some--if not most--of this himself, but decided that it would slow up the manga if he drew and inked the script right before Aizen jumped into battle with the Captains. Until a Klub interview, a new manga chapter, or added TYBW scenes retcon it, I think it's safe to call this Canon.
2. The timeskip is fairly significant: Aizen shows up with his post-rebellion outfit, so we can assume this took place shortly after he left Soul Society. This also lines up with the numbers of Harribel's Fracciones (very shortly after Tesla's--implying that Aizen left Hueco Mundo for a while to pursue the final stages of his plan, during which time, Nnoitra betrayed Nelliel and left the third slot open while Aizen was gone).
3. Aizen definitely gave that shark orders to go kill Harribel. A clever trick to deceive her into thinking he'd saved her.
4. It is interesting that a low-level Arrancar (in his released form, granted) could take down a Vasto Lorde, and it shows just how strong Arrancars actually are. Even though Harribel was a starved and deliberately-restrained Vasto Lorde (i.e., if she INDULGED in killing and growing, she could probably be "Stronger Than a Captain", but she wasn't buying that), she couldn't have been THAT much weaker than a Captain-class Soul Reaper. But that's one of the main purposes of this flashback: it shows that she was holding back her power the whole time, and it wasn't until Aizen came along that she finally accepted strength as a necessity, once she didn't have to kill for that power.

She was one of my first female characters o thought design was super interesting and ability was interesting. She had a very noble and regale vibe like a knight. Dope underrated character

Maybe I missed something, but I thought Aizen didn't get the Hōgyoku after he broke away from Soul Society?
I wondered how she didn't regress when she was an adjuchas(That is, if she still had the "I do not wish to create more casualties" mindset by that time) since adjuchas HAVE to kill and eat other hollows to retain their forms
She killed any who attacked her until evolving the final time, at which point she started sparing them because there was no point to kill them.
I just wanna know why the female hollows don't have holes like the male ones.... Is there a video or explanation for it?
They do, it's just it is typically under their uniform (eg. according to the data-book, Harribel's is at the top of her pelvis). The only one who doesn't appear to have one is Nel.
I thought if they didn't eat other hollows they reverted back to their old forms is there a continuity error here?

The one thing I disagree with you on is you considering the anime not canon. I believe that at least as far as Bleach is concerned it is. Mainly because the anime very rarely changes the canon. It more just adds to it.

I am sorry to burst your bubble, but that makes no sense. Masaki was eaten by Grand Fisher, who became an arrancar(a pretty useless one at that) and got killed by Isshin. So, whatever could be left of her, should logically be inside of him. I am not sure how the rest of hollow eating stuff works and what Kubo decided to make it be. I heard that in CFYOW, Ichibei says that if you kill an arrancar, all the souls he eats are released, maybe, idk.

@@randjan8592 Yeah, we were told she was killed by the Grand Fisher, but then suddenly she was attacked by Yhwach eating her soul. The thing about bleach is, people, lie, the first thing you are told can often be misleading or not true. We know the Grand Fisher attacked her, but we can't be sure he ate her. The craw here, is young Ichigo's soul would have been too tempting too (yes the Grand Fisher targeted women, but all hollows go after souls with powerful potential), which means that the attack of Yhwach probably scared him away, or Masaki did. In the end, there is too much about that encounter that never made sense.
