      Dallas, what do you think about great smelling fragrances with bad performance?
      Annoys the shit out of me when I find a scent I love that doesn't last or project.
      Recently bought a By Kilian fragrance that was supposed to be extreme (Straight To Heaven Extreme) but doesn't project and doesn't last. Paid almost $400 plus shipping.
      I think I'm going to start being way more selective with my fragrance purchases when it comes to performance.
      I'll miss out on some great scents sometimes but I'm a lot happier with my fragrances that perform well.

    In all honesty, I don't need my old cheap scents to do anything for me. It's about the journey and where I started to where I'm at now. A true collector isn't looking at it the way you are. We all start somewhere and you were proud of them at one time. I'm proud of all the ones I bought because I bought them. Who cares if anyone else doesn't like what I bought. Everyone I got holds a memory for me and that's what's so cool about this frag thing. Stop overthinking things, people good grief.

    Great video man. One point to not be overlooked should be that cheap and inexpensive are 2 very separate and distinct things. Cheap = low quality. Inexpensive = low price.
    I usually buy frags in the $30-50 range and you can find some absolute gems from more obscure houses that are niche quality. You just need to know where and how to look. I’m really into watches as well and couldn’t agree with you more on that point. Buy quality, regardless of the price being low.

    I have been WAITING for someone to say this. So, so, so true. Unless you have $20 to spend and NO MORE (which is probably, NEVER), don't buy cheap fragrances. You'd be WAY better off to have 1 great fragrance than 3 bad ones. I cringe every time someone recommends Sean John Unforgivable, essence of cardboard (and everything else on that quality level). What is even the point?! Even if YOU haven't sampled enough to discern the difference in quality, people around you WILL, just by nature.

    • @CarpathianLife
      @CarpathianLife Před 5 lety

    • @fkasample1543
      @fkasample1543 Před 5 lety +1

      @@CarpathianLife I've found that not to be the case. Common "cheapies" (like CK One Shock, Perry Ellis 360 Red, Sean John Unforgivable)... are pretty horrible; composed cheap and smell cheap. A $20 Nautica is quite literally more valuable being considered "$20 off a good fragrance" by not buying it. I hate seeing people do cheapies list because it's a waste.

  • @acidic6706
    @acidic6706 Před 5 lety +2

    Agree so much. Cost of a fragrance might not always indicate the quality 100%, but it's a spectrum imo. The cheaper it is, most likely it isn't using oils as good as it's more expensive counterparts. Finding a great fragrance in the $20 bracket is very challenging, and there are few and far between great frags in that $15-30 bracket. As you explore more expensive fragrances, there will be a higher percentage of greater fragrances within that bracket. And I'd say most niche over $150 is fantastic quality (with some misses here and there), even if the notes aren't your thing. I think the market will naturally correct itself if an expensive brand is bottling the same quality that fragrances under $30 use; that's why fragrances hit discounters too. Buying cheapies is definitely a gamble, especially since they're blind bought way more often than expensive ones.

    I get what he is saying. He's simply throwing a "caution" to those who are starting out. I went through the very same thing. I blind bought/bought a bunch of subpar frags when I began this journey - many of which I now regret. It's weird, but it actually stresses me to look at them, Lol. A reminder of how important it is to really slow down, take time, and sample a frag first. Get over that natural tendency to act on impulse. It's also difficult not to want to purchase it NOW, out of fear of an imminent reformation!! If you wait for something to hit discount, you are likely not to get the/a "vintage" formulation.

    But I won’t be buying more as I want the £ for the 20 or so I really like. I’m half way there but for now it’s useful to own cheapies because they stop me digging into the good ones so much for no whilst I’m building up the ones I want.

    I disagree. I bought some retro quite cheap scents and they smell great. The problem is that slowly one by one they're disappearing from the market and the prices of now so called "unique" smells also go high very fast. For example, who would have thought that cheap Masumi by Coty in vintage bottle will cost so much now? My grandma used to wear it, it used to be a cheapie.

    I've been obsessed with fragances for over 20 years and you are spot on. Most of my cheapies (and by cheapie I understand as something under $25 USD for 100ml ), have turned into gifts for others or expensive bathroom or car air freshener. But just like everything else, there are exceptions. I always wear Preferred Stock (that is where my "journey" started), Aqua Quorum (great office - summer scent) and Lagerfeld Photo (sadly discontinued). Sometimes if I foresee a day without any type of excitement at work, I do not feel like applying good shit and since I'm a proud oversprayer, I'll reach for the cheapest of the bunch. Good advice mate.... I would say have no more than half a dozen cheapies in your collection.

    Depending on your age I guess because if you are young then a big collection of various fragrances is acceptable, but if you are an older man , then there’s no point in buying many fragrances because you won’t be able to wear them all. Also it all depends on your situation, if you are a man who is a business person, then some good quality fragrances is recommended, however if you just hang out with young friends then some good cheaper fragrances is okay.
    But yes you do start to appreciate good quality fragrances as you grow older. Kinda like wine and many other designer products. Lastly it all depends on your budget.

  • @RubbelisPro
    @RubbelisPro Před 5 lety

    I've found my experience to be the opposite, I find more appreciation in my cheaper fragrances than I do in the one's that I splurged on. I think people regret buying cheap fragrances because instead of doing the proper research and testing/smelling samples and decants, they blind buy cheaper fragrances online and they end up not liking whatever they received. So, the end up searching for that one perfect fragrance that will be the end of all fragrances, their signature scent so-to-speak. Consequently, they end up with multiple 3 oz+ bottles of fragrances that they don't even necessarily like, that they won't be able to make a profit on through decanting. When in reality, this whole thing could be avoided if these newjacks just sat down and figured how how to read note breakdowns and really understand what a fragrance smells like before they buy it. Otherwise they'll never figure out what they truly like. For me, I've found that fragrances like Dylan Blue, Nautica Voyage, Aventus, and Versace Eros are all my cup of tea, because I figured out what they actually smelled like and what demographic they were aimed towards before I bought them.

Its sad that you threw in that “haters” comment in the end because your whole argument was not very well thought out and im sure if you put some time thinking about it you would realize that at the end of the day there isn’t a $100 difference in a vetiver note in TF’s Grey Vetiver and Lalique’s Encre Noire. At that point you might as well give them away because you won’t make anything off of selling them either way. Luckily I don’t have too many I do not wear but what he is saying is so very true.
