    Just listened to the Tufts Wind Ensemble play this piece, and it really stuck out to me as the highlight of the show (so much so that I just had to go find it on CZcams!). I love how smoothly you change the meter, and the syncopation adds this bounce to the piece that really makes you feel the namesake emotion of joy!

    I love the fact that you expressed the changing meters to the length of the phrase, not the length of the phrase determined by its meter. This piece is a work of art that I will always love. The melodies and the harmonies are intricate and well voiced, while the bassline is providing the structure for a beautiful sound. I cannot give enough compliments to this piece.

      Dear Aria, thank you for your kind comments. I must say that your comments about the meter are both intuitive and very accurate. The truth is, I was terrified of odd meters as a young musician, so I find it a bit ironic that I often compose in odd meters. To confirm what you wrote, I let the melodic phrase dictate what the meter should be. I'm always searching for the beautiful shape of a phrase... If it turns out it requires a 6/4 or 5/4 bar, I go with it. It's inspiring that so many young musicians are able to play "Joy," for example, and do well with it, perhaps because they let the phrase guide them instead of becoming frightened by the meter. Just as it is in life, everything must flow naturally... Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. They made me smile...

      @@josephcuriale2293 I sympathize with the apprehension towards more unorthodox meters. I tend to look deeper into music. The feeling of the beat, the composition of the bassline, the way artists compose the chords. I find looking deeper into music is what brings me joy. Most people tend to hear the parts that stick out the most, like the melodies or that one really cool bass lick, but I look toward the tenor line. Im a trombonist myself, so I tend to listen to the lower parts of the band. In my opinion, that is where the complexity lies in an amazing piece of music like "Joy." I'm sorry for ranting, but I would comment for hours on end if I could.

    This song is so fun to play on trumpet one. My 2 other trumpet buddies and I switch trumpet 1 parts. They both got fun but generic parts. And I was the last person to get trumpet one. Good things are worth waiting for :). oh my god though time signatures are a pain 😅 thanks for composing this incredible song with ways for youngins like me to get better at trumpet!

    • @josephcuriale2293
      @josephcuriale2293  Před rokem +1

      Hello Braeden, thank you for your message. It’s nice to know you enjoy the trumpet parts. I was a trumpet player, so I always make sure the trumpet parts are fun to play and the fingerings feel comfortable. As for the time signatures, I must confess that I was terrified of anything other than 4/4 when I was a student, so it’s especially interesting that I write very often in multiple meters. It’s because I determine how many beats there are in a phrase, and mark the bars accordingly. Then I count the number of bests to determine the meter. If you forget about the meter and just think of the melodic phrase, you won’t be bothered by the odd numbered bars. Soon, odd meters will feel as natural as 4/4. Best wishes, Joseph Curiale

    hey my high school band is playing this and we had a question pop up. i wanted to ask the composer himself.
    why does the piece keep changing time signatures

    • @josephcuriale2293
      @josephcuriale2293  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi, it changes meter based on the length of each musical phrase. For example if, it takes 4 beats to express a musical phrase, it will most likely be in 4/4. If it takes 5 beats, it will most likely be in 5/4 or 5/8, and so on. Wherever I felt the next heavy downbeat, would be the beginning of the next bar.
      When I was a young student I was afraid of odd meters and mixed meters, so I find it interesting that later in life I would be composing very often in odd and mixed meters. I never consciously set out to do that. It just happened naturally, again, based on the length of the musical phrases. I hope this helps.
      Good luck with your performance. May I ask the name of your school and where it is located? I try to keep a record of where the music is performed, just for my own knowledge. Thank you and best wishes. Joseph Curiale
