This lovely, professional-level performance of “Awakening” far exceeded my expectations of a university orchestra. In fact, next to my own recording with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, it stands out as the finest public performance of this work to date. My sincere thanks and congratulations to the entire orchestra for all the care required to perform “Awakening” to such a level that it would bring me to tears of joy.
Special thanks to the trumpet soloist for such a pro-level performance (lovely sound); the oboe and English horn players for playing their parts with the heart that was intended; the French horn section for their soulful performance; the concertmaster for leading the string section so well, and the percussion section for keeping the syncopated figures in “Joy” rock-solid. But the lion’s share of my gratitude goes to Dr. Brian Meixner, for without his sensitivity, intelligence, intuition, and great skill as a conductor, such an accurate and high-level performance of “Awakening” would have most likely been impossible. It takes someone with a heart of gold to be able to bring about a moving performance like this. Though we have never met, and I feel quite sure he’s never seen me conduct “Awakening”, it seemed a bit supernatural how many of his musical gestures reminded me of my own (he even wore a jacket similar to mine). 🙂He must have reached deep into the collective unconscious for his inspired performance. Special moments like this do happen occasionally.
Once again, I’m grateful to all of you who performed “Awakening” so beautifully.
Wishing you further success, good health, and happiness.
    With gratitude and best wishes,
    Dr. Joseph Curiale
