In this video I will show you how to remove yellowing from old plastic or How to Make Yellow Plastic into White again. This is an easy process called retrobrighting or retr0brighting. Everyone has old electronics, home appliances, toys or car parts that have an ugly yellow tint, so in this video called Easy way to remove yellowing from old plastic you will learn to restore and how to whiten yellowed plastics (cheap & easy!). I will show you the way I've found to be the best and most reliable.

Thanks from Guatemala! I moved into a new house and there are several yucky yellow items I was afraid I would have to toss - now I think I can save them with this method.😊
Yellowing will return over the time the same way as from new. To stop this process again, after hydrogen peroxide process you scotchbrite plastic 500 or 800 grit gently, degrease with isopropyl alcohol and spray clear coat lacquer tiny coat
I think the yellowing its triggered by UV so a clear coat that has a UV blocker is probably the only thing that will work.

From Illinois USA! I'm about to try this with a SNES that I was given for free, hope it works! 🤞
Wish you succes on your work !
Please post an update afterwards! I've got one that's gone yellow, too!
Hydrogen peroxide for anyone (like me) who did not understand what this 'works like magic' stuff was. Apart from that, great video.
It was in the subtitles / captions (the little CC icon on the video).
Сlorinated water is most effective. A liquid with chlorine gas odor.
Thanks
Thanks? Aqua oxigenada = HP. Amazing! But HP is not oxygenated water. In Spanish, "Hidrogen Peroxide" translates to "Peróxido de Hidrógeno."
@@TroyQwertit is the same
Love and thanks from Turkey❤️What do you recommend for yellowed plastics that cannot be removed, such as yellowed handles of washing machines or dishwashers?
I'm going to try wrapping with paper towels and keeping the wet, it should work.
Using hydrogen peroxyide how much percent must it have to be? Thank you for your answer.

Hello Mr., I was wondering: Can I also use a lamp instead of leaving it in direct sunlight? My balkony only catches a little bit of actual sunlight and that only for a few hours.
Hello, yes but you must use UV lamp
Me alego !! Saludos !

It should be noted that the Hydrogen Peroxide used in this video is not that which is available for wound cleansing. That which was used here is 100%.
it's just 30%
Thank you , that’s the info I was seeking in the comments
NO !!! 100 VOL = 30% If You use 100% say bye-bye to plastic :)
Amazing..

Grazie 👍
About the keyboard: how did you clean the stuff around the keys? Cause usually that's shut tight around the electrical board...
The keys are to be wedged out with a screw driver or a blunt knife frim it's plunging switch lever.
I had a computer that was turning yellow/brown from cigarette smoke. Wiped it right off with isopropyl alcohol.
I had the same problem, but from peeing on my computer, wiping with isopropyl alcohol did work too!
thanks from France ! 😀
Merci !
very happy for your result too
Thanks for watching 👍👋
Thank you for the tutorial. I'm heading out to buy my drogueria paysandu. Can't wait to see the magic.
Have fun!
So are you supposed to cover it? Or leave it open?
Agua acinada and hydro peroxide are the same?
Si
what % H2O2 did you use, and how long did it soak ?
Think it said 100 volumes (idk if that helps)
@@fernandapinzon99 there are 3%, 6% or stongest is 9%. Which one
@@fernandapinzon99 100 VOLUMES is different mark, it is equal to 30% - standard marking
@arksin11 30% (food grade) - hard to find and gloves are mandatory

I've done this in the past. I have plastic parts that are 20 years old that are still bright white. The yellowing doesn't return. Also it doesn't make the plastic brittle either. Both are myths.
Great ! thx for sharing your experience !
From Uganda.
🙏👏
Hey! If I wanted to do this with a plastic sink but am unable to move it into the sun, would it still work slightly just soaking it still?
No, it needs uv rays, either sun or an UV lamp. thx for watching !
heyyy...how does one get those super-fine old Microsoft keyboards to work on Windows 10? I've tried, and NO_WAY!!! I loved those boards, and great to type on, right? Help! Thanks!
Try with quality adapter from PS (ps/2) to usb !
Saludos!!!
Asi es soy de Uruguay ! Saludos !
Cuanto tiempo de recomienda dejar ahi..?
Sir please time help
Ise kitna time tak rakhna hai
Guys any idea how long should i leave it..?
what is the percentage of the hydrogen peroxide in my country in the Czech Republic, max 35% will be enough
100 VOLUME = 30% 130 VOLUME = 35%
How do you clean parts that are too big or complicated to disassemble, so there are no way to put them in a jar?
Spray bottle 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
Try to find a gel (it's used for bleaching hair so it's easy to find) apply it with a brush and wrap the whole thing with thin clear foil. But be aware that electronics maybe damaged!
So how long do u let it sit in the hydrogen peroxide?
question! does this work on clear plastic aswell?
Sorry never tried.
Thanks from Italy
Grazie !!
How do you coat them with some clear coat so they remain white always.
the yellowing come from UV light (mainly from the sun) so unless the coating have UV shield I guess it will still yellowing over time
I'm waiting from Brazil!!
Obrigado !
Droguería Paysandú. Saludos yorugua!
Un saludo!
Can this work on yellowed pvc canvas used on louis vuitton handbags
You will bleach the canvas. This works on pvc PLASTICs. pvc canvas is cloth material COATED with plastic. For this o work, you have to submerge the whole surface in a liquid or gel, u cannot do this without wetting the fabric coated by the pvc.
I have a big portable AC that became yellow. It's too big to drown it in liquid. Is there a way to apply a product on it instead?
Hi, there is peroxide in form of gel, may work. thx for watching !
@@Repairman10169 Thank you I will search for it any try it out!
The volume indicates the concentration of peroxide in the solution.
3% = 10 volume
6% = 20 volume
12% = 40 volume
30% = 100 volume
35% = 130 volume
So this is 30%, because VOLUME is rear used, more used is %
Thanks for the info 👌
How many percent?

Thank you. Cool
Gracias 🤗🇻🇪
Hola, no estoy sewguro...supongo dependerá cuanta luz reciba...Saludos
Creepy video, but it did clear the yellowness.
From Indonesia 👍
👍

How much is the percentage of hydrogen peroxide you're using?
Hi! Thanks for the vid. I was wondering. You said to leave in direct sunlight for 6 hours. Do you rotate the containers or move the pieces around to get sun coverage on all sides?
Hi, yes better rotate and move the pieces. Thx for watching !
@@Repairman10169 Thank you :)
Only hydrogen peroxide, nothing else? What concentration did you use?
Yes only, 100 vol was used you can use less concentrated but will take longer.
@@Repairman10169 Thanks for the reply! I wasn't familiar with the term 100vol, so looked it up. It's what we'd call 30% here in the US. I think it was 30% that I splashed a few drops of on my fingers once; it stung and bleached my skin white immediately. Does that sound like what would happen with the 100vol that you used if you got it on you? (I'm trying to get a sense of how caustic it is; my previous experience makes me a little leery of H202 :-0)
This does seem so much easier than other approaches of making a paste, etc, and it doesn't sound like you need to leave it outside in the sun for it to work.
100 VOLUME = 30% H2O2

what about for stuff that can’t be soaked
I've done this with bleach in the summer in the sun just whipping the surface over with bleach and leaving for about ten mins no longer as can eat away at plastic

Can you use high powered lights, to do the same
They must emit UV light, maybe the sun, UV leds, etc
Does the hydrogen peroxide have no affect on colored surfaces? Does it only bleach the whites?
No
Hi there im living in uk where I can buy this stuff like that?

Works in a grey plastic?

Could the peroxide be reused for the same process once again?
I would say no, H202 exposed to Light it degrades into H20
Reusability varies depending on the used volume, the concentration and the degree of yellowing.
What if it’s something you cannot submerge?
They sell peroxide in cream form, apply with a brush.
Will this work if the Hydrogen peroxide is only 20 volumes? because the one you used is 100 volumes. I cant find anything higher than 20 volumes locally. 0:44
Yes but it will take longer to do the job. Regards !

I have some action figures that has turned yellow even though they were in storage instead of being in the sun. If I were to do this treatment, even though it would whitening them, would it also enforce the plastic so it won't be brittle?
no.. old plastics and rubber will get brittle or degrade
you can enforce them with transparent resin.. but not guaranteed will work or making it looks like glossy
@@judasthepious1499 I figured as much. Whitening a yellowed plastic is one thing, restoring its actual structural integrity is something else. Seems like there's no way to restore the brittleness of a yellowed action figure aside from replacing the actual yellowed piece.
The lower the percentage of hydrogen peroxide used, the longer you will need to leave it in the sun and the more intense the sun/uv light has to be. I Have beige colored watch bands that came with a beige faced watch. The watch bands were looking yellowish around both areas where the bands connect to the watch case. I submerged them in 6 percent hydrogen peroxide in a clear container and wrapped the top with clear plastic in the video, left it for 40 hours and the yellowed areas are gone. The straps now look same colour as the watch dial, a 10 year old watch brought back to new again.
Great work ! thx for your feedback !
@@Repairman10169 No thank you for the demonstration. I tried everything else and nothing worked like this procedure did. Retrobrighting is a godsend. I just wish I had access to higher percentage hydrogen peroxide, highest sold over the counter is 10 percent, but i could only find 6 percent at the time.
No instructions on how long to leave it sitting in the hydrogen peroxide and in the sun?
Would’ve been nice
He said at least 6h.
Does this method work on plastic toys?
Yes should work.
Yes, many vintage toy restorers use this method. Check out "toy polloi" channel on CZcams.
