Ursula von der Leyen left without a seat during EU meeting

  • The EU Commission President is one of the most powerful women in the world but that didn't prevent a high-level diplomatic snub that many are putting down to sexism.
Ursula von der Leyen was speechless after being left without a chair in a meeting with Turkey's President Erdogan and the EU Council President Charles Michel.
As the two men took their seats, the German former Defence Minister eventually took a nearby spot on a sofa.

@Vivian R Because chairs are for posing for pictures, not for sitting, they don't even look comfortable to be fair. As well it seems she was the first one in the line, so it is not clear why she didn't go an sit on the chair first.
Simply said - there are no issue here. Room has seating for like 20 people, so there plenty of space to sit. That anyone would get offended by it is just beyond belief. And further there is not evidence that Ursula got upset about it, it is just WOKE press who are making big deal out of nothing.
Why the two guys sat there - I don't know, I assume there were reporters around and they sat down to take pictures, after that I assume they should have swapped for Ursula to take pictures with Erdogan. I don't know if that happened or not.

Diplomacy is about simbolism, this isn't just a "woman left without a chair", she is the president of the European Commission. They were meeting with the agenda to discuss 'women's rights' and only two chairs were made available to begin with. What is the symbolism of such act? When following 'protocol' ends up with the top men relegating their female counterpart to the sidelines? (On an issue that pertains to women no less) On top of the fact Turkey has recently withdrawn from the Instanbul Convention, such diplomatic gestures only continue to sustain a distinct aversion to the values of equity and progress for women's rights.

the European commission is unique diplomatically.
The role of proposing laws can be done by any Member of Parliament in other countries.
And in other countries, MPs then vote on these proposed laws. And the decision to adopt or reject the law is based on these votes.
But in the EU, these three roles are split.
    The EU commission proposes laws.
The EU Parliament votes on it.
And the Council of the EU@Council of Ministers co-ratifies the votes.
So in effect, the leader of the EU commission is on a rank with another country's MP.
Hence , in this case Dr von der Leyen, sits with the foreign minister of Turkey, also an MP.
