    The one major thing about an electric bike: near zero maintenance. No tune ups, no oil changes, just brakes. I see electrics as a companion to my big gas bike. Around town, quick runs to friends and store, electric. Long rides, intercity, gas. I will just wait until the prices drop, as all things electric have. 1st flat screen was $21,000 , 1st cell phones ran $3000. I can wait...

      But you'll just get run over by some stupid driver who isn't paying attention and usually only notices you by the sound of your bike.

    • @Hello-jh1rq
      @Hello-jh1rq Před 6 lety +23

      You don't even need maintenance on the brakes. It's electric, so use the regen braking. You will rarely ever use the normal friction brakes, so you don't need much maintenance on them.

    • @chaddles623
      @chaddles623 Před 6 lety +5

      So true when these get longer range (approx 150-200 miles per charge) faster and cheaper and priced more in line with competitive gas street bikes I would for sure get one. But being electric I would of hopped if would of been faster than it is, expecially looking at Tesla's compared to gas cars, they are so much faster, and so should this bike and with all the torque I would hope they can get these to compete with at least a 750.

    • @chaddles623
      @chaddles623 Před 6 lety

      Hello 123456789 I believe he ment that ya still need to repalce the brake pads like any bike, just not as often probably but maybe more since it uses regenerate and that could wear the brakes out faster, just not sure since I don't know much about these and tires and other common stuff that wears out. But I understand what your saying also.

      @i4004 Před 6 lety +20

      but do you have complaint about for how long can it run on one charge?

    • @spiritusinfinitus
      @spiritusinfinitus Před 6 lety +8

      The new 2018 version goes up to 328km(city)/156km(highway)/212km(combined) - that combined figure is about the same as my ICE bike goes on a tank of fuel!

    • @i4004
      @i4004 Před 6 lety +2

      mine has 26l tank. and i don't wanna think about borrowing electric cables or electricity and charging it overnight wherever i go. and those numbers would be more useful if they were "from xxx km" instead of "up to". presumed highway speed of 112km/h is also on the slow side...
      this is essentialy a city bike, and i don't think bikes belong in the cities anyway...unless if it's to escape one...

    • @renegerritsen6178
      @renegerritsen6178 Před 6 lety +7

      For a commuter bike 212km combined is just fine. How many people travel 100+ km from home to work and back every day? I'd be able to drive to work for a full week if those numbers are correct. And the cost of running it should be very different as well, because you have much less maintenance. Does it have a chain? It doesn't need engine oil, coolant, etc I presume. No exhaust, just proven technology that will last a lifetime.
      But then again, I'm an electric car enthusiast too. It's just that they are quite expensive at the moment, but once prices come down, I'll definitely buy one for commuting :)

    • @i4004
      @i4004 Před 6 lety +2

      who pays for the gas/electricity if you commute that way?
      and who pays if you use public transport?
      if you're "green" you'll use public tr. as that would be greenest, no?
      heh....
      btw. do you think using a bike on same route every day can be fun?
      you know, i like bikes, A LOT, been riding since i was in elementary, and i'm just wondering would i be reading a book in the bus instead of spoiling my day with that usual and boring route on the bike everyday.
      and i say this both after doing the same route many times, and going to unknown parts...
      heck, i would like to teleport myself somewhere else just to avoid going thru the (old) roads i know just to reach new roads and places...hehe...
      >No exhaust, just proven technology that will last a lifetime.
      don't get too optimistic, there are videos about problems this bike has.

      CSIOPS cst39 I get 220 km from my 2014 11.4 DS. The 2017 is about 5% more efficient, the S is about 5% more efficient than the DS and with the power tank has 16.3. Yeah you have to ride carefully to get 200 miles, but it's still doable. My point is that there's no need to wait for a breakthrough. Or just add the Hollywood Electric fairing, for another 10%.

    • @gasdive
      @gasdive Před 6 lety +1

      CSIOPS cst39 I just looked at PlugShare. I can't even see the roads for all the charging places along that road. If you think having a charge opportunity every couple of km counts as "hard to find" God knows what you'd think of riding electric here. When I got my first Zero there were three chargers in the whole of Australia. There are three roads out of my town.The closest actual car charge points to me until this year were 250 km south, 350 km north and 1500 km west.

    Electric vehicle tech is really exciting to watch, but there are still too many limitations. There needs to be a quantum leap in battery technology where you'll be able to get 200+ miles on a charge on a bike like this and it will only take something like 10 minutes max to fully recharge. I believe that once they get there, EVs will take over a significant portion of the market.

      Price is not to high compared with other electric bikes.
      But let 'us': the early adapters pay the price so later it will get cheaper. Someone has too pay for the development costs.
      The more 'we' buy them, the cheaper they will get.

      Sone brands will relase this year 300kwh chargers, which means that if applied to bikes (battery technology will have to improive in order to hander that much input power) will charge those 200 miles in no time, just a coffee stop. But I agree, for those who like to travel right now is not the best option, for day to day usage I cannot find anything better.

    Also, regarding the battery meter, it's not really linear like a normal fuel gauge and it's not particularly accurate. They're expensive but will only get better and cheaper and that's saying a lot for a bike that's already so good.

      I certainly meant no offense. I guess I was speaking to it's value proposition. The fact that for the same $35,000 you can buy 2 Nissan Versa's and have almost $10,000 for gas money. I can live with an econo-box design. I can live with 80mi range. I can live with meager performance. I can even live with $35,000. I just have a hard time living with all of those. Having said that, at around $6000 an off-lease Leaf is very, very tempting

    The Zero FX or FXS supermoto are the bikes to get. They cost about $10,500. Think of it this way. The nearest competitor is the Yamaha WR-450F at $9K. That's a great bike! If you get the WR, then you might spend $500 on an exhaust, and $300 on a tuner. That's $9700 right there. You're guaranteed to spend $100 on valve shims or else your bike will get harder to start over time. At the end of the year, Zero knocks $1K off the price. A Zero has about 8" of suspension travel instead of a whole foot like on the Yamaha. You're guaranteed to get the cops called with a loud bike. On an electric, "Oh, it's just a scooter. See, it's electric." So, in the big picture, electric supermotos are really kick-ass bikes. "Alta motors" makes a bike called the "Redshift" in an MX, EX, and Supermoto for $15K. That bike has chain drive, 12" of travel, and weighs about as much as a WR250, but with 2009 WR450 power. Really, electric bikes seem expensive, but you can get away with a lot more shit. If you fuck up a battery, it doesn't need machine work to fix it. Just order another one. No break-in period. Just hook it up and go. 8 more years of life.

    Electricity bike owner here. The good things about these bikes are fast acceleration, 0 emissions, easy to ride, and super quiet.
    The downsides:
    1. Battery degradation that will happen overtime and you will have to get it replaced once every two years.
    2. The battery performance drops significantly in winter. You get 50% less distant than riding in the other seasons.
    3. recharging the battery can take from 20-60 minutes depending on what kind of the battery you are using so it's not suitable for a long distant ride.
    4. (This is just my experience) Riding in a crowded suburban areas can sometimes be a little bit dangerous as it runs so quietly and people walking in front of you WILL NOT hear that you are coming.

    • @ericpowell7887

      This is just an anecdote so feel free to ignore it. Somebody stole both my slip-ons off of my sv1000 but I said screw it I cant afford new ones. I also just assumed it would be safer because more people can hear me. What I learned is that there is no way to verify this is safer and to me it sounds like bull shit because the amount of noise my bike makes does not alter my safe riding style and you must keep in mind that when the windows are rolled up in a car the noise gets distorted as you roll by. So saying noise makes you more identifiable I would argue noise makes you more difficult to pinpoint especially in cities where noise bounces of buildings before reaching the ear. Also, to the gentleman who would rather polute the world, keep in mind that technologically speaking ICE's are pretty terrible and regardless of how you feel about them they are coming and will be everywhere (especially in motorsports). The only time you will see ICE's in the future is when people are feeling nostalgic and they offer a historical class in racing competitions. Finally, I find ICE's to be a bit too much sometimes and I would love to have a vehicle that I don't have to worry about maintenance or feel bad about pushing it non stop because electric motors are more efficient by a huge margin, more durable, and the fact that they have more power potential for scaling upwards is just another plus. Let me know what you think.

    • @eraldorh
      @eraldorh Před 7 lety +12

      Maybe they can put a loud speaker at the rear that plays a taped recording of a loud exhaust for those that still believe people in cars actually pay any attention at all to the sound of an exhaust. If you need someone to notice you then use your fucking horn.

      If you are relying on a cager hearing you and then not doing something stupid, you are already behind the game. i would almost rather they don't try to guess what to do until I am past them. Chances are just as good that they hear a bike, and then think they need to do something and move over right where you were going. I'd rather they just mindlessly drone on the way they were going, and not try to do anything, because chances are that they will fuck up and do it wrong.

    The thing that seems weird with automatics (I've never ridden a fully automatic) is that it feels like you'd have to shift your grip when doing mixed riding which feels like it'd ruin the flow. With a manual you just "reset" the gas with every shift while on an automatic you'd just gradually pull your wrist down as speed goes up.

    Bad thing about the cams though is the power and kicks in at 1400, so it's virtually impossible for me to keep my fist out of it, especially with modded suspension and tires (double darksider). Soooo, I get only about 36 mpg, unlesss I clench my teeth and slow down to pack speeds, and I'll get 42.
