Kinda funny it took a simple grilled cheese for people to figure out he doesn't know everything about food. Ironically enough, Jamie Oliver managed to make a pretty nice grilled cheese. Chef Brian Tsao and Frenchie made a video where they reacted to it. I guess Gordon Ramsay can't help but over complicate a recipe, meanwhile the only dish Jamie can make properly is something so ridiculously easy.

One thing uncle roger missed mentioning was, if you butter your buns, no need to add any oil to pan, also in this case too much oil was added and also if you put anything other than cheese between bread it becomes some kind of sandwich, this is not grilled cheese

Nice to finally see this reaction from you, Uncle! I recently bought some of Ramsay's frozen meals. A few are good for what they are, others are mid at best. 😂
Uncle Roger is right, the thickness here matter a lot. The thinner the bread the easier it is to melt cheese before outside will get burnt. Actually thickness is square growth you need in time to cook. So if normal 1cm toast take 2 minutes to grill. It will take 4 minutes to grill 2cm thick one. (Its example not valid cooking time) - As in video Outside will be long burnt before cheese melts.
And absolutely something with a soft crust. Sourdough is way too harsh, you'll scrap your gums to pieces trying to eat that sandwich.
Thinner cheese slices would work as well.
@@joshuamcdowell1460 What?! 🤨 No. "Less cheese"is never an option. 🤤
Cringe comment. Its not rocket sience to create a grilled cheese😂😂
@@velipulla3936 nah he's right. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to cook well. You're the cringe here.
I'm actually impressed how much Chef Ramsay fucked up a grilled cheese sandwich.
Using fancier ingredients is debatable as fucking up goes, but he literally burnt the bread and kept the cheese unmelted which is the only two things you're not supposed to fail at.
Adding kimchi for acidity is extra fucked up on top of failing the very basics of making a grilled cheese.
I'd be even more impressed if somehow Chef Ramsay defends this objectively massive fail.
I didn't think he'd mess up the heating up of a grilled cheese even. Nope, he surprised me and put it in a fireplace. WHAT, lol
Thank god he does not defend this…he acknowledges it’s an absolute fail haha
Kimchi in grilled cheese is good though, he got that part right.
His reaction to absolutely everything Gordon done had me in stitches 😂😂
I remember the first time I had kimchi on a pizza. It works surprisingly well. I was blown away and will still eat it if I see, but will NEVER order one.
And to address the issue with acidity: I worked at a place that would put a couple of slices of dill pickles on top of the grilled cheese. I couldn't understand it. Then one day, one was dead in the window so I snatched it up and scarfed it down. I must say, the acidity offset the savory and really knocked it out of the park! So much better with just a bit of dill pickle.
Imagine him preparing this in a cooking show and another top chef is yelling and cursing at him like he does to others. Epic
"Gaslighting" is a reference to a hugely successful 1938 theatrical play "Gas Light", 1940 British motion picture "Gaslight" based on the play, and an 1944 American remake that departed somewhat from the original play. The American version starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman is the most widely known and is universally recognized as a classic.

7:54 Fun Fact:
You can melt an ice cube quickly by pushing it.
When you apply pressure to ice, its melting point decreases, causing it to turn into water
This is known as pressure melting.
I was thinking the same thing
@@ivw22 came here to look for this.
Your body's heat also helps when you push it down with your hand
@@vector_619 it’s mostly the pressure, because ice has lower density as water.
@@wurstmitbrot87 will it work if I press it with another thing with the same temperature as the ice? I feel like it won't. I remember putting a spoon on top of a block of ice and the ice below the spoon melts faster. I think even if the spoon absorbs the ice coldness the difference on temperature between the two still exist so the ice melts.

KIMCHI ???? Now he's just disrespectful
Like kimchi but not on grilled cheese 😢
Kimchi grilled cheese is actually really good, just not whatever he was doing in the video
It might seem odd, but it's a tasty combo that works. Try pan frying chopped kimchi (It upgrades the flavor and texture) before placing it between 2 slices of toasted sandwich bread and melted American cheese. As @IDiggPattyMayonnaise says, Gordon had a good idea but his execution of it was terrible.
I'm completely with Uncle Roger here. You can make gourmet versions of grilled cheese but there are still rules.
1) low, controlled, even heat in the pan. Do not use a fireplace, bonfire, etc..
2) soft bread that isn't cut thick and soft cheese that is also thinly sliced.
3) consider the harmony of your flavors - turkey & Swiss, ham & munster, apple slices (sliced thin) & brie. Nothing about dry Italian cheese and kimchi makes me think they'll go well together.
I suspect a very disharmonious mix of overly salty and overly sour flavor, in a sandwich that's unevenly cooked, burnt in parts, and just a mess all around.
low controlled heat is important even when you're using cheeses specifically intended for melting, like American. when you're using something less standard it's only MORE important
its no longer a grilled cheese if there is something between the bread besides cheese.... though i do love a genoa salami, capicola and a sharp cheddar melt and then season the bread slightly with garlic powder and butter
Bacon grilled cheese ftw
Kimchi is actually great with those harder cheeses for some reason. I made a grilled cheese with aged English cheddar and kimchi the other day and it tasted incredible
I just want regular grilled cheese

If I had to guess, Gorden has never had an American grilled cheese sandwich, or more likely he prefers the British Cheese on toast. Unsure how to proceed due to lack of probably remembering the essence of grilled cheese, he went with the thinking of grilled cheese is just two cheese on toasts put together.
This is important in that cheese on toast is made with a broiler. With the heat passing through the cheese. While grilled cheese are made with the heat passing through the bread to melt the cheese.
As a British connoisseur of cheese on toast (my father is the cheddar melting maestro and taught us well), Ramsey failed epically on this one.
Our method:
Cut bread no thicker than half an inch, toast it, then (optionally) butter.
Cut cheese no thicker than quarter of an inch (ideally cheddar, maturity level to suit taste (dad likes extra mature, I prefer mild or mature). Never use low fat: it goes weird. You can use grated cheese but imo it’s unnecessary extra effort (and washing up) and bits can fall off.
Cover toast with one layer of sliced (or grated) cheese.
Place under medium to high heat grill (it’s exactly the same thing as a broiler, just a different name) and watch it like a cheese-loving hawk until the cheese bubbles. If you’ve cut your cheese properly, covered your toast adequately, and not blinked, the toast won’t char before the cheese is dancing merrily.
Take it out and eat before it rehardens.
Add a grilled tomato instead of kimchi (though that was the only thing I didn’t mind in the Ramsey cheese disaster, and probably saved it). You can slice tomatoes and place on top of the cheese before grilling, but they won’t allow the heat to fully melt it if you do.
Definitely going to have cheese on toast today. With some sweet little piccolino toms. (Maybe a dollop of kimchi too.)
@@clarewillison9379 Thanks, you saved me a trip to Google- I was looking at OP's comment thinking 'What the HELL is a broiler'?
@@nihtgengalastnamegoeshere7526 I was confused when I first heard it, thinking it must be a version of boiling, but it’s an old term that just means “really really hot”(used to describe the sun).

@8:00 is low-key pretty funny. Used the one example where famously pressing down on something always makes it melt (it's how ice skates work).
I always thought it was the friction 🧐 hmm interesting
“Touch of oil and he pour whole bottle”, I am dead lol 6:17
Would just like to mention yes an ice cube will actually melt under pressure. Aside from friction you can wire cut ice from the pressure applied by the wire.
7:51: Actually, pushing down on an ice cube *does* make it melt faster than if you just leave it alone, because conduction (through your hand) is a faster method of heat transfer than convection :)

The flip trick where you toast one side, flip, then add cheese because toasty and hot helps melt cheese. Seemed logical and its how my me-maw taught me lol.
When I make a grilled cheese, I use a good cheddar or even just kraft singles.
Butter the bread, place it in a low/medium flat grill with the cheese in the middle kind of like how Gordon did it.
I flip every 20-30 seconds while placing firm pressure on the bread without crushing it.
It toasts very slowly while allowing the heat to travel through. The results are perfectly toasted sides with an incredibly gooey middle.
Try a sour dough and butter the pan (browns the bread more evenly)
Or use mayo instead of butter
Once I went to make a grilled cheese and discovered I was out of butter. Go to the store, or figure something out. So I used olive oil. Amazing! But the balance has to be right. Too little and it’s dry, too much and it’s greasy.
@@prankmonkeyxs650 I use a cast iron flat grill with a gas stove, it heats very evenly for me. Just gotta watch that heat because of the low burning point.
Takes me about 10 minutes or so to make a grilled cheese but man it's perfect every time with a light golden brown outside.
I've made grilled cheese sandwiches with many different cheeses but the common factor is that they were soft to semi-hard cheeses that actually melted. Also, bread slices that are less than a full inch thick.
