The stroke adjust is very interesting. A German stamping press roll feed had a similar sliding yoke to adjust the feed length per press stroke. The feed rolls actually rocked forwards and backwards never making a full revolution. The rolls would close on the feed stroke , move forward, the at the end of the set feed length open and the rolls would rotate backwards. I rebuilt many of them.They were very interesting to rebuild. A fine example of German engineering.

Hi Max, Interesting idea using a rack and pinion method rather than a jack screw for adjusting the crank pin like most shapers. It simplifies the design since there's no need for bevel driving gears, but requires a stronger locking mechanism since it's not self locking like a jack screw. Nice touch up on the chiniuzm scraping job. Love the chainsaw 😂😂

Thanks for showing the internals of the slotter max. My home made slotter the conrod space is full of grease and the ram is oiled with an adjustable oil drip feeder, total loss oil system. Works fine and as you stated for occasional use only. Used it 2 years ago to slot an internal blind key way. As with most Chinese products they are hit and miss. They are improving.
I am going to look at an extension tube from the oil port to dribble a little oil on to the top of the con rod . Hopefully some of it may make it's way into the roller bearings . 👍
All workshop equipment from China is semi-finished and needs to be taken apart and put together correctly, often good castings but needs sharpening. We get what we pay for. Nice job as usual, found your channel a week or so ago and just enjoying everything analogue. Old man from Sweden
It reminds me of what a friend told me. He spent a bit of time going back and forth to China working with the factory making parts his company imported. He said that the Chinese would give you whatever level of quality you wanted. It just depended on how much you were willing to pay.

I have a downloaded diagram of a Bridgeport one and it shows a worm gear but in your one as you said it has a bevel gear which I think would work better. Loved the chainsaw scraper 😂. Cheers

G'day Max. Great video & content, but the chainsaw looked blunt & a bit slack on the chain, so I was glad you pulled out the Scraper. Good to see you used some good axle grease on the Barings. When finished & fitted should be a great working addition to the shop. 👍🏻 👌 👍🏻

Great video! I like the longer videos especially by somebody like you that really knows your shit! That thing actually looks pretty well made besides the chain saw scraping. I really want to scrape by Bridgeport one day if I can ever get my hands on the proper straight edge for a reasonable price. Also I haven’t seen any videos of anybody doing a really detailed scraping on the bed and saddle ways. I want to make sure I do it perfect to keep everything square with each other. Luckily my Z axis still has perfect original scrapings. I can’t wait to see your future videos as I always look forward to them. I have watched your channel from day one!
Yeah but Max, look at the oil retention pockets in that scraping Besides you have nice Y grooves for the oil to run around in.😀 Good to see the Sandvik's doing something besides gather dust!
This actually seems to be pretty well made, other than the minor scraping needed and fix of the manufacturing error.The locking screw on the gib screw is something I see for many of these in my old machine tool books. By old, I mean going back to the 1880s. So a well tried and traditional method of locking that screw. I e found that Chinese industrial machines generally seem to be quite good.
They got the gib head fit to the gib spot on , no play to allow end movement . Their are only a couple of minor things that needed attention , but now it will be a very good head . 👍
Mine must be older, it has a casted adjuster wheel in fractions of 1/8th inch indications no decimals, and a baldor motor. The mounting to the model j ram end is also cast and has milled degrees on it for swing and another for nod. Used to be Bridgeport grey til I repainted it.

Yes, using a sharpie as high spot blue is fast and clean, lay-out ink is used on press tryout tools, ive used chalk on rougher fits.

Yes , if the plate behind the graduated plate has a zero marked position . My one did not , so it did not matter . All I did was set it to zero stroke & mark a new line on the back plate . 👍
Its not unlike stroke adjustment of a shaper; it just has to be long enough to clear the work with the knee to bring the work up to the cutter's lower limit. I have Bridgeport slotter head- I think I looked at the graduations on the stroke adjustment when I overhauled the unit but haven't since. I don't use it often but it sure has been handy on a number of occasions. Yeah that factory "scraping" looks more like a angle grinder taking off the burrs sort of a cut. 🤣
Thanks Max. I am surprised your slotting head is as well made as it is. I am wondering if they are actually Taiwanese? I have an old Taiwanese drill press from the 1970's and it is way better than the current Chinese machines of similar capacity. There is almost no plastic on the machine and the castings are very sound. I checked my slotting head after watching this video and it will only go to 1.8 on the dial (3.6" total stroke). I’m wondering with the need to scrape & the area that was binding, if maybe that connecting rod pin and its lock screw, did the pin maybe need to be slightly lower down when the locking pin was tightened? It seemed to mostly be only binding at the top between the “V” of the oil groove - which is where that pin would rub / have a interference / conflict with the scraped plate if it wasn’t maybe tapped in slightly lower a few though before locking its position with the locking pin maybe? Then again the blueing did show some binding at both edges also, so maybe it wasn’t just the pin being slightly proud. I don’t know if I can wait another week to see the final outcome 😂😂 Another excellent video, as always, keep up the good work. I don’t think you can make a video too long. If the content is interesting enough people will watch to the end. Didn’t know I needed a slotting head, but dang it now I do & another “I want” gets added to the growing list. Max, when you were assembling it occurred to me that you could have trouble if the inner slide box, (the one with the gear rack inside it) were installed with the drive pin on the wrong side. It would shorten your final stroke. Based on the end of the video it sounds like this was not a factor, but how did you know which orientation it should be in?

G'day, Max. Yet another great video of yours on this fantastic looking ying-tong-iddle-i-po machine. 😁 Is the assembly as easy as it looked? I noticed it was a bit fiddly poomanchoo at times. I found most things that came out of China back in the day were never that straightforward anyway. Mind you, things haven't really gotten any better now. Quick couple of questions for you. First up is, when you blued up the plate, did you not consider turning it 180°, just to see if it still pinched as much the other way around? The second question is, with those six cap screws only tightened at a pinch, will the vibration of the ying-tong-iddle-i-po machine not force the plate to become loose, thus causing uneven ware on not just the moving parts but possible damage to the plate itself? It was just a thought because at one end, just above the blue marker, I swear I saw the letter 'A' etched into the plate. If it was indeed the letter 'A' then what does that mean? Does it look a bit wonkey, I think it does, the letter, not the plate, or is that my eyesight playing tricks with me? Or, it could just be the font style. What do I know. I was celerbrating the birth of my first granddaughter this weekend, bit of a pub, bar, and restaurant crawl if you ask me. Bad gramps bad. 🤭 I may be seeing things. I had way too much rice wine yesterday lunchtime with our Chinese meal followed by many pints of beer then several bottles of Saké in the Japanese restaurant we all went to last night. I vaguely remember getting into the taxi, then nothing until I woke up on the sofa this morning. Mate, I'm so dehydrated I could swallow up the Yangtze this arvo.🤭 Oh, yeh, before I go. I hope you can clear this up for me, Max. I'll just write the main points or I'll be here all day.😂 I read online there was this guy, a school teacher in Queensland back in 2003 who had a run-in with the trafic police which didn't end well. Anyway, he had it bad as he was disabled in several ways. First, he was deaf. Secondly, he had a strange looking defect on the side of his nose in the shape of a tadger, a donger, a doodle, you get the picture? In the UK we would literally call him a dickhead, be it in the true sense. Anyway, the story goes. He was driving his car into the city on his way to school when the police pulled him over thinking he was drunk. It was 7.05 a.m. for god sake. The policeman thought the man was refusing to get out of the car saying he was disabled and couldn't move unless he had assistance. The policeman requested the man open the window and place his hands on the steering wheel, which the man did then explained he was on his way to school. When the policemen put his head through the window he spotted the man had no legs and was truly disabled but as he started to withdraw, he noticed a strange looking object on the man's nose. It was about 4" long 1/2" thick and drooping to one side. The policeman asked the man some questions, as they do, while his partner ran a check on the vehicle. He asked if he had been drinking and why he was weaving across the road. The man, being deaf, apeared to be shouting at the officer once he had withdrawn from the car, or so the partner checking the vehicle details thought, but the investigating officer next to the car realised the man was deaf. Waiting for his partner to return, he asked the man what was it on his face, to which the man replied. Its a nose dickhead. The policeman's partner, who had just reached the opposite side of the car, never heard the full conversation but just heard the man call his partner a dickhead. At which point, he pulled out his gun thinking, the driver was being insulting, aggressive, and had already shouted earlier, but the gun accidentally went off, shooting the driver in the side of his chest. He later died on the way to hospital. Is this story true or just another piece of fake news pumped out over the Internet every day? It is a different set up to a shaper with the connecting rod set up , as direction does not effect the stroke as with a shaper . I have heard that term before , Scottish Yolk being what the shaper mechanism is called . Thanks 👍
I wonder if we are missing some thing with Chinese tools generally. China has its share of idiots as do other countries, but this not bad. The castings are hefty, there is a recognition of the need to make accurate slides. My question is, why when they have gone to so much trouble, used so much Australian iron, that they go of at half cock? Care costs, so are they so price aware that they strip out the utility at the same time?
Typical Chinese precision work, about 90% done then send it out. I reckon most Bridgport type slotting heads made never see more than a few hours run time in the life of the mill they are fitted too. The real Bridgport mount sandwiches the end of the ram and is a tight fit to get it on, it has a large diameter locking/ locating bolt in the centre with a round disc nut underneath that locates with a pin into a recess in the casting. The ram is flaked for oil retention as well, I haven't had it apart to see if the internals differ.
I didn't know anybody except me did scraping any more ? I doubt many of the UNI kiddies even know what it is . I make my own out off old files . The Chines piss me of they go 90% of the way and then cock up on the little stuff .

You hit the nail on the head there , the retainer screw location has either been drilled in the wrong spot or the pin is too long . Cheers 👍

Usually, the chineseum would have paper 'shims' to lift top plate above ram.
As long as it doesn't get too hot shouldn't be a problem

Max, when you were assembling it occurred to me that you could have trouble if the inner slide box, (the one with the gear rack inside it) were installed with the drive pin on the wrong side. It would shorten your final stroke. Based on the end of the video it sounds like this was not a factor, but how did you know which orientation it should be in?

Is the assembly as easy as it looked? I noticed it was a bit fiddly poomanchoo at times.
I found most things that came out of China back in the day were never that straightforward anyway. Mind you, things haven't really gotten any better now.
Quick couple of questions for you. First up is, when you blued up the plate, did you not consider turning it 180°, just to see if it still pinched as much the other way around?
The second question is, with those six cap screws only tightened at a pinch, will the vibration of the ying-tong-iddle-i-po machine not force the plate to become loose, thus causing uneven ware on not just the moving parts but possible damage to the plate itself?
It was just a thought because at one end, just above the blue marker, I swear I saw the letter 'A' etched into the plate. If it was indeed the letter 'A' then what does that mean?
Does it look a bit wonkey, I think it does, the letter, not the plate, or is that my eyesight playing tricks with me? Or, it could just be the font style. What do I know.

I read online there was this guy, a school teacher in Queensland back in 2003 who had a run-in with the trafic police which didn't end well.
Anyway, he had it bad as he was disabled in several ways. First, he was deaf. Secondly, he had a strange looking defect on the side of his nose in the shape of a tadger, a donger, a doodle, you get the picture? In the UK we would literally call him a dickhead, be it in the true sense.
Anyway, the story goes. He was driving his car into the city on his way to school when the police pulled him over thinking he was drunk. It was 7.05 a.m. for god sake. The policeman thought the man was refusing to get out of the car saying he was disabled and couldn't move unless he had assistance.
The policeman requested the man open the window and place his hands on the steering wheel, which the man did then explained he was on his way to school.
When the policemen put his head through the window he spotted the man had no legs and was truly disabled but as he started to withdraw, he noticed a strange looking object on the man's nose. It was about 4" long 1/2" thick and drooping to one side.
The policeman asked the man some questions, as they do, while his partner ran a check on the vehicle. He asked if he had been drinking and why he was weaving across the road.
The man, being deaf, apeared to be shouting at the officer once he had withdrawn from the car, or so the partner checking the vehicle details thought, but the investigating officer next to the car realised the man was deaf.
Waiting for his partner to return, he asked the man what was it on his face, to which the man replied. Its a nose dickhead.
The policeman's partner, who had just reached the opposite side of the car, never heard the full conversation but just heard the man call his partner a dickhead. At which point, he pulled out his gun thinking, the driver was being insulting, aggressive, and had already shouted earlier, but the gun accidentally went off, shooting the driver in the side of his chest. He later died on the way to hospital.
Is this story true or just another piece of fake news pumped out over the Internet every day?

Nice video. The rod pin on the ram side is too high and hits the plate! It should be flush so it can travel under the top plate.

It is a different set up to a shaper with the connecting rod set up , as direction does not effect the stroke as with a shaper . I have heard that term before , Scottish Yolk being what the shaper mechanism is called . Thanks 👍

I wonder if we are missing some thing with Chinese tools generally. China has its share of idiots as do other countries, but this not bad. The castings are hefty, there is a recognition of the need to make accurate slides. My question is, why when they have gone to so much trouble, used so much Australian iron, that they go of at half cock? Care costs, so are they so price aware that they strip out the utility at the same time?

Typical Chinese precision work, about 90% done then send it out.
I reckon most Bridgport type slotting heads made never see more than a few hours run time in the life of the mill they are fitted too.
The real Bridgport mount sandwiches the end of the ram and is a tight fit to get it on, it has a large diameter locking/ locating bolt in the centre with a round disc nut underneath that locates with a pin into a recess in the casting.
The ram is flaked for oil retention as well, I haven't had it apart to see if the internals differ.
