    • @lestranged
      @lestranged Před 3 lety +4

      My back would kill me if I worked on the floor. Nobody has room for a dedicated 'fancy' cutting table but any kitchen table can be used as a cutting table. You can get folding cardboard cutting mats for very cheap and I put it on top of my kitchen table. (or I use my teflon rotary cutting mat if i am using a rotary cutter). The cardboard one is bigger and works fine for cutting with scissors. Save your back, save your floor and rug. You will thank yourself when you get older. That's keeping it super real!

  • @monicataylor9977

    I think the word you mean is godet, pronounced "go-day"
    There is a word gore which is usually a pattern piece that has a flare when 4 or more pieces are sewn together to make a flared hem on a skirt. Godets are usually inserted like you did and are added at hem to give a flouncy look, as you said.
    Great how to video as usual and beautifully done !! 👏

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged Před 3 lety +8

      I think she means GORE (which is the wrong word, as you correctly said , godet is more accurate) but she is saying GORD which makes it very confusing. Gores are not triangle insets, they are wedge shaped pieces that go all the way from waist to hem to make up the skirt. But GORD is nothing, it's a non existent word I don't know where that D came from.

    • @TheDIYDesigner
      @TheDIYDesigner  Před 3 lety +4

      hahah yes I am learning that very quickly here in the comments section that they are called GORE, or GORES for plural or a GORED Skirt. Some are saying Godets but most are saying Gore. I dunno lol The negatives of being Self taught...I screw up the technical/proper stuff all the time.

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged Před 3 lety +2

      @@TheDIYDesigner Most are saying "gores" because they're just correcting the pronunciation. But if you do some research you can learn the difference between gores and godets. Gores are wedge shaped pieces that go from waist to hem, multiple gores make up the entire skirt. Godets are triangle shaped pieces that are inset into the bottom of a skirt.

    I must DM you on this dress I’m making my granddaughter for Easter. It’s from the Spring/Summer Trend fashion show. Instead of the gored bottom. I’m doing a cupcake bottom using fishing wire. Give me a few days to do it. I’m in a time crunch, because I’m leaving for Tennessee soon, and in the middle of making 8 bouquets, 7 boutonnieres and 3 flower girl baskets for a wedding. Hoping I can get to it, and hoping it turns out fine. Never done anything like this before. I failed in love with you and your work, since you made the zip away skirt. Then I found you on Home&Family. Love the show. Always a fan❤️.

  • @evelyn_r

    I think it might be a fabric saver if you cut the skirt to the shortest length of the shirt or add to the shorter parts first, you would have a seam line but it would match the other strips so look more like a detail than an accidental seam. Essentially what you did was quarter circles to attach to each slit (for those who prefer to draw up a pattern) if you use two slits lengths, you only need two pattern pieces, if you make more slits, at a three different lengths, it’s three quarter circles.
    I love the way this way of doing it would also allow for you to have the skirt section a completely different colour. Maybe light denim on top and floral on the bottom, monochromatic (white top, black skirt).
    This is really versatile! 💖💖💖
    Thanks for the inspiration and your method tute! 👍

    I have been asking my hubby for his shirts, and yesterday he just cleaned out his closet and gave me all his dress shirts. I'm planning on making a different shirt dress. Now I can't wait to complete it, this dress is awesome!!

    That's genius! I'm totally doing this, just have to figure how to do longer skirt (can't wear minis anymore, alas) But other then that - heaven! The horsehair is sooo cute!

      I was thinking that too. But I think that you need to buy a very large shirt. You need to take it in on the side but then you have extra length.

      @@blondedarkness6258 I thought about cutting a rectangle from the same fabric as the godets, sewing the button placket from the second shirt on that - that way the length of the shirt woul be my skirt length basically - and then proceed as Orly does here. Will see if that works..

      @@veronikavolhejnova5036 @BlondeDarkness I think I am going to try it out on a dress that has just been sitting in my closet. It's long enough to feel comfortable, but I feel it may be too thin to wear by itself anymore. It's black, so I think I am going to try to add color??!!

      @@TheDreavill That would be cool to!! I have done godets while I was working on my medieval and viking dresses and I always wondered if they did this too. Like the basic dress is one colour and the godets a different.
