I agree with you on the no aeration. Just in case I try to back out later, I installed subsurface drip line 4inches below the surface that I’d destroy if put a mechanical aerator on it. Only liquid aeration and now I can add verticutting to my program. Thank you!

i wish allett would make them like the commercial version..with blades alot closer together..im going to make my own verticutter cassette in the winter..its just a bar with blades with bearings either end..im thinking a thread bar.circular saw blades seperated with nuts..10mm apart(ish)..the stihl cordless is the same price with the blades the same distance apart as the allett..you get a verticutter and a scarifier with it and a battery for £260.yes its plastic but it hasnt got a big heavy roller that flattens what youve just stood up

  • @kickingworld

I especially like how the grass stands up tall after the Verticut. My Bermuda grass has become so thick, spongy, and matted down with runners. I really need to do this but I can’t seem to find any Verticutter machine. They’re all $10,000+ commercial grade or only a cartridge attachment from Allett but I don’t have that mower. If you know of a true Verticutter machine even if it’s a lot of manual work, I’d be grateful of a link or keyword to search. All I see on amazon are a hybrid dethatcher/scarifier for about $300 USD but the scarifier is much thicker blades and I think meant to dig into the soil. Whereas the Verticutter we want it to just slice those runners at surface level l and get the grass blades standing vertically.

@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert I agree! Used to look after a cricket square and hollow tine once a year to get air down to roots and relieve compaction from rolling. This encourages deeper roots which for cricket is essential to retaining a solid surface and the quality of the game. For gardens, agree the cost of machinery and top dressing volumes can make this very expensive. At home I have a cheap electric cable scarifyer & verticutter which is perfectly adequate. Just done a March feed / weed / moss killer and can’t wait to get out the verticutter. Nothing goes to waste, all off cuts composted too.

Your grass is brilliant. What variety of grass is that?! Rye? I’m fixing to overseed my hybrid Bermuda tif 419 with a special sports turf blend of annual rye. Going to keep it really low all winter for some green grass. Earlier this summer my Bermuda got so thick with runners. I could not find a verticutter anywhere online or in Texas so I tried a dethatcher and I pretty much ruined the last 5 weeks of my beautiful grass. If you or any blokes on here know where to get a verticutter machine for under $500 or some sort of manual make shift one (not a dethatcher and I don’t think a scarifier will work either), please let me know. Unfortunately don’t have an Allett machine as they are extremely pricey in the US with shipping. I have a Cal Trimmer reel mower and a manual earthwise reel mower.

Its all down to individual as each mower got different wear but you just want the blades skimming the top of the soil

Do you or anyone reading this have any experience verticutting Bermuda? Seems like it would be counter productive cutting the “runners” that grow out but at the same time, maybe it promotes thickening up the lawn… any thoughts or experience on this matter?

Yes. You actually DO want to Verticut Bermuda if it gets very thick and spongy in the summer. I really needed a Verticut machine but couldn’t find one so did a dethatcher and completely ruined it. My grass almost got too good and too healthy that it was growing so much laterally and since it was spongy and thick, and not standing up straight it wouldn’t really cut much even at the lower settings. So underneath the blades of grass the runners would keep growing and it would eventually show a lot of brown in the grass. I direly wanted to just slice the stolons but could not find this device so when I did the dethatcher it simply pulled up everything and I had to end up cutting it all manually with scissors on my knees. It was ridiculous. It created so many bare spots and looked awful for 5-6 weeks. Thankfully it recovered right before we are going dormant in Texas but it was stress inducing for sure. If anyone knows where to get an actual verticutter(not a scarifier) in the U.S. please do tell!
