Clean yo’ brushes!
Original video: @therealmicroguy
Now, this isn’t the perfect experiment given that there’s no control using new / washes beauty blenders but the conclusion is still very accurate - clean your brushes and beauty blenders
🧼 How to clean
•All you need is some soap and water, shampoo, or your favorite facial cleanser
•Lay flat and let dry on a clean paper towel
•If in a rush, use a blow dryer on low settings to dry
•Wash at least once a week but after each use would be ideal!
Microbiology changed my life, I clean like crazy now
hygeine is good but make sure you don't overdo it.
i don't, being afraid of ants is funny though
Totally!!
True! My lecturer checked the germs from my scalp for an example to the class it was a bit embarrassing
But it is normal to have most of them. I'm taking microbio right now. We did samples from our cheeks and everyone had growth on their plates. But second plate on the video looked different tbh
Clean pillowcases and towels make a huge difference as well.
And wash your blinking pillows too. It's so nasty when you pull a pillow case off of the pillow is yellow and nasty. I wash mine every couple months.
It just occurred to me that the "decorative" pillows I throw on top of my pillows also need their pillowcases washed.
or don’t dry your face with towels. I like take the excess water with clean hands and start directly with skincare and wow
@@val-we8kw time can be a factor though... and most ppl have chlorine water, or also have hard water with rust, lime and calcium in it which you dont want sitting on your face. If you do use towels, microfiber are the best (over terri cloth) because they dont have the fine lint.
Lord
Most women, do not clean our brushes
with spray. You use a cleaning solution
and warm water, with a scrubbing pad
Exactly. I clean mine with Zote soap and warm water. Even my beauty blender.
I just use soap and water🤷♀️
@@hi6575dawn
he didnt even try to clean the brush. he just sprayed solution n tried again instead of thoroughly washing lol
I literally use dish soap and water, yeah
Hi,
Lab student here.
Really really important thing for all of you to know:
Bacteria on your skin, scalp, etc from there is not bad!
You have residential bacteria that are very important for you, the functions of your Body and your Protection!!!
So yes: clean your brushes so you don't risk getting "bad" bacteria on your skin. Though your own bacteria protects you from that.
2) don't be embarrassed when you took samples in school to look how much bacteria XYZ had and you saw a lot. That's actually very good and nothing to be embarrassed off!
It allways depends on what species are found but mikroorganisms are not embarrassing and not a sign of your hygiene. Without them you couldn't life.
3. Don't overdo sanitation or cleaning. Your imun system needs "triggers" so it is prepatlred for everything. It is proven that people how grew up or are living "germ free" (always cleaning baby's hands, always desingecting the toilet and so on) are more prone to get sick, have a weaker imunsystem and develop more allergies.
Even if you don't have any now, you can still develop them.
It's all about a healthy balance, like it so often is in everything biological.
This needs to be the pinned comment😅
It does needs to be pinned
I agree, some of those bacteria are normal flora of the skin, they can only cause infections once there's trauma on the skin or abbrasions.
Yessss !!! This kind of content are very sensationalist
Came here to say this, I’m a molecular bio major going into pathology. It’s so important to remember that “clean” doesn’t equal “sterile”
"that's sick!!" *continues to use my uncleaned brushes*
😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 , love this !
Girl sameee I’ll leave it up to god to watch over me and protect me from all of that 😂
Right? Ive made it this far
Now you're sick😂
the way i just got up and cleaned all my brushes and beauty blender 💀
I am still sitting thinking I'm alive and well
😮 me too 😅
I’m just about to wash my beauty blender now. I think I’ll clean my phone screen too 💀
But the cleaning spray made it worse in the video I'm afraid to even do that lol. Gotta use my hands from now on
How are you meant to clean a beauty blender? I think my one is just a bit shit lol
The only problem here is that he didn’t show a test culture, in which he would have used a clean new brush. Everything has bacteria on it, it’s normal, and being able to see the difference between a clean brush swipe and a dirty brush swipe would have been better than just showing that dirty brushes have bacteria on it.
Yeah, I was kind of disappointed that we didn’t get to see the comparison. As far as we know, it could have looked nearly identical 🤷🏼♀️
Thank you, I will now refrain from eating my beauty blender
Nobody thinks a spray is actually cleaning your brushes. I want to see the same test with brushes that are thoroughly cleansed in antibacterial soap and then dried with a hair dryer!
Yes!
I’m in microbiology. He used an agar plate and probably incubated it at around 30C*. Degrees. It’s crazy how bacteria become resistant to cleaning chemicals.
In my lab we work with stock cultures, and we have to use a 10% bleach, 90% water sodium chlorate spray to disinfect our benches before and after lab allowing it to air dry. The school makes their own disinfectant because if we use name brand bleach the bacteria will become resistant to the chemicals and won’t work anymore and if we did an inoculation of the bench before and after cleaning with name brand chemicals, the after plate would probably have more bacteria on it unfortunately. Proving that the chemicals don’t work on killing bacteria.
It’s a super fun class. Lol. Learn a lot.
So what is the best to kill bacteria ? Only alcohol ? I thought bleach kills it all, so sad to hear they get resistant to bleach...
@@alezy7645 well they use the 10% bleach alcohol mixture I believe using their own branded bleach because the higher concentration of bleach to alcohol the higher chance of the bacteria becoming resistant to the branded bleach, which also has other chemicals mixed into it, not pure bleach.
Loved ur comment as a bio major lmao. Nasty shit
@@saladnander3690 not to mention the dang antibiotic downfall we’re experiencing right now…microbes are becoming resistant to antibiotics now. Also crazy we find antibiotics in soil lol.
@@saladnander3690 if y’all find more antibiotics. Bless your soul. Coming from a nursing student. 😅
The main problem is that he didn't really clean any of those brushes or blenders. He simply added enough moisture for the bacteria to grow in. You need to wash with soap and warm water then allow the tool to completely dry. Then he should have tested the sponges
I think that was the point. To many people just rinse it and use them again instead of clean them well
Bacteria and yeast! It’s important to note that our body houses bacteria and yeast to fight off the bad stuff
thank you. now i’m obsessively washing my beauty blenders
They're a dollar at dollar general and less online. Just buy a new one.
Just buy clean them but buy new cheap ones every month like toothbrush
That's why I usually use my freshly washed fingers XDD I have I a few brushes for powder, but I clean them a lot and replace them when I think it's time
Me too!!
This is why I don't use sponges, I use my hands as often as possible.
I clean my brushes with a solution of soap, vinegar (1:1) and warm water. I leave them to soak and change the dirty water and wash them on a silicone pad. I wipe them with a kitchen towel of the excess water and leave them with the brushes down to dry. They come out very clean and disinfected thanks to the vinegar...can be sprayed with pure alcohol when they are dry...Try it !!Success...Greetings from Romania.❤
And this is why i wash my brushes with hot soapy water once a week. I have multiply brushes so I am not reusing nasty ones all week. I do not buy beauty blenders or any sponges. I have been acne free since I was 20. I learned about keeping equipment clean when I was in cosmetology school.
Would you mind providing a detailed description of how you clean and maintain your brushes? I would greatly appreciate it.
Not everyday?
@@lorihurt7991 yeah that would be awesome 2 know :)
I do mine straight after I use them
Tell us how you wash them
Bro my booty blender (as i like to call em) would fall on the floor and i’d pick it up and still use (5 second rule😬)….. imma wash my brushes rn🥲
The five second rule hahaha
Me tooo 😭
Lol that’s what I call mine 😂😂😂 I love ppl with simpler humor. 💕
I honestly think it's better to get new ones... 👀🤯😅
Cause your dirty that 5 sec Rule make believe shit is for kids 😂
I legit get frustrated with the official cleaning stuff most of the time and just use handsoap. Really thankful for that right now.
I just wash my beauty blender with handsoap prior to using it 🤷♀️ gotta wet it anyways
Right. They acting like soap doesn’t exist
You have to wet beauty blenders 👀
@@hadilayyad6147literally learned this like last month lol none of the beauty gurus tell you to wet it and I don’t think I read the packaging real close of any I’ve used but I don’t recall them ever saying make it wet lol
@@hadilayyad6147you don't have to but it usually makes your foundation blend more easily. You just need to squeeze as much of the water out as you can so it's damp instead of wet!
@@ilawinterburn2111 Thanks for the tip ♥️ I have a dry face and I’m hoping it will make my foundation look smoother too.
I like how at the end of the video Dr. Shah is clearly saying to recycle the brush instead of throwing it away heheh
He said clean your brushes
Yeah he said clean 🧼 your brushes not recycle ♻️
@@torischwartz745 thanks for repeating. Couldn't understand the first one🤔🤔
No he mouthed Get rid of your brush
Thats the reason I use CC creams and blend them with fingers... so much better
I told my friend this why she got acne and she said it was just allergies and her brushes and blenders are NASTY
A cleaning spray and towel wipe down isn’t going to be enough to actually clean your brush or sponge 🙄😂
I'm glad i don't use a single thing 💀
I have 3 brushes and 2 cushions and I clean them every week with hand soap, it’s actually super easy, quick, and fun
If you ever feel useless, remember the guy on the right exists
Useless guy you are talking about is dermatologist who is showing his viewers why to clean brushes! 😅😂
@@rutujabhoi772 As a dermatologist, he should know better than to shamelessly steal content. He adds nothing to the video, unlike other creators like Doctor Mike or DanaFootDoc
I recently washed my brushes, can't remember how long ago I had washed them last. Anyway, one of the brushes while cleaning it had something black pop out into the sink. Closer inspection, it was a spider! I freaked out so bad and threw all my brushes away.
bruuuuuh
That's horrifying 💀 I'm gonna go wash them now
Yhats a pretty extreme and expensive choice lol
You must have had a few cheap brushes. My brush collection is expensive and pristine. You seem impulsive and not very bright.
@@NormaJean951 sorry not everyone can buy brushes more expensive than 3 meals combined
I use my clean fingers and it makes foundation and concealer look better anyways due to the heat. Then I just do a little touch up with a brush or blender or puff but it makes me worry about brushes for my EYES!!!!!
This video inspired me to get serious about cleaning after each use. Mostly I use my fingers instead of my brushes because of that but still my brushes are cleaner now.
There was a girl in Germany that got a severe infection on her face and had nerve damage from never cleaning her brushes
Oh wow! *Goes to wash brushed immediately*
Brooooo my guy didn't even let us look at it at a microscopic scale 💀
wait, I actually commented this? And HAVE actually watched this almost a year ago??
Well, but fr tho. I think my guy didn't really need to show us what those species of bacteria actually look this as you can already see them on the petri dish, but yeah it would be nice if he did show us on a microscopic scale for the betterment of our knowledge.
I’m so glad I have an immune system to protect me from these sorts of things
As everyone goes into their bathroom and either washes everything or throws it away to go shopping! I love that someone did this it's very fascinating.
This made me get up and clean my brushes and beauty blender 💀😭
thank you for posting this doctor! i just started using beauty blenders, so imma go back to using my fingers
Wow your reactions added so much lol
I couldn't have gotten by without your thorough input on this video. Thanks for all your doctor-y insight. jfc.
I clean my brushes and beauty blender once a week, and my pillow case every 2 nights.
I have a clear skin now 🥰
that girls is why I use my fingers 😂 and it saves me at least a few bucks which I can spend for some candy 😂😂
Yea and I get so much shit for it! "Do you KNOW how much bacteria your hands still carry?!!? Ew!!" 🖕
I took a microbiology lab a year ago for my biology degree. A woman brought in her beauty blender for the plates that day and it did not disappoint.
Changing your pillow case more often can help too reduce breakouts too.
That’s my cue to clean my beauty blander after 2 years
Same lol
TWO YEARS….
@@piglette13 we don’t talk ab it
And the big bad germies didn’t kill you?
I wash my beauty blender everyday with soap and hot water.
Certain bacteria you need, but the star looking one is concerning. However…. Spraying your brushes a couple times and giving it a swift wipe is NOT a cleaning the plain water could’ve caused bacteria, That’s why you do a major cleaning with soap warm water and put it in one of those spinning cleaners, they work fantastically or by hand with the soap and water and I usually rinse with HOT water dries in no time. BUT.. The sponges need to be replaced they harbor lots of “bad” bacteria, you don’t want to take any chances. Just some helpful recommendations. Blessings y’all❣️🙏❣️ Be safe out there🙏❣️🙏
Thanks for the motivation to clean my brushes
Time to burn my old brushes 🔥🔥🔥
And that is why I don’t use foundation at all 😃👍🏻
Good, it's not good for you anyway
Has nothing to do with it. Just clean what you use. Not that hard
@@NEVERMORE1940 ok but it was never that deep. If I don’t use foundation than I don’t have any brushes to clean.
I just clean them with warm water, soap and disinfectant and dry them. And , a lot of our skin commensals produce biofilms ( eg Staph epidermidis) but they aren't really harmful .
Finnally someone who doesnt talk 24/7 in the videos they react to
I wash my beauty blender every day before I use it but I never wash my brushes, I just forgot to. I'm about to change that now
His reaction was very helpful. 💀🤌✨
You know you can buy bulk packs of the sponges? It’s the type that come with the standard cream foundation compacts and some powders. It’s made of the same material as the beauty blenders. You can just throw them out.
Ok, but how much waste do you produce doing that? Imagine if every person did that and the environmental factors that would then come in to play.
This is why I clean my brushes weekly
best way ive found to avoid this is using my fingers XD i actually have learned to have much more control over where the products are going with my hands rather than brushes! takes some practice but it wastes less product, feels more accurate (for myself, at least), and i feel like it's far easier to fully clean my hands over a sponge or brush, which are made to hold onto product! no hate to anyone using brushes or sponges at all but i suggest at least trying to use your hands once or twice if youre interested ^_^ not as difficult as it sounds!!
@doctorly. What do you recommend for cleaners?
I would like to know also. Been spraying w isopropyl alcohol after cleaning them, but I imagine that is very drying.
Idk if he’s saying their experiment is wrong or that we should clean our brushes 😂
The latter
I was also wondering what his position was on this, as it looks like he thinks the experiment is fake/not valid 😅
The only wrong part is it was not autoclaved. I feel like it's such a waste throwing all those petri dishes.
There is no bunsen burner on that bench so the moment those agar plates were opened, they could have immediately been contaminated by transient flora in the air, invalidating the entire experiment.
Wow, you added so much to this video
Can you please do a video on desert skin care? My skin is always dry and even my nose hurts from the dryness lol
The fact I was already thinking about cleaning my brushes and then this video shows up on my feed 💀
its a sign XD
@@seriffseriff7434 lmao fr 🤣
I don’t disagree about the potential for infection of the eyes and mouth, or even infection of the skin like impetigo, but how would that cause acne? Isn’t C. acnes anaerobic? If it could survive in an oxygenated space why is benzoyl peroxide effective against it? Am I missing something here?
My complexion has never been better than after I quit using foundation and concealer. It took a few awkward weeks of walking around with red irritated skin as it healed. But after that I have really healthy nice looking skin with only an occasional blemish, that I just leave to heal, I don't cover them up anymore. I'm allowed to have a blemish now and again, I'm a person not a doll. I moisturize right out of the shower and that's it.
what about the second part with the cleaned brushes??
It made it Worse. Lol
Use equal parts vegetable oil and dish soap to deep clean your brushes, then disinfect them
people usually fully rinse the brushes, not just spray them
I just gonna use my fingers 😱
Make sure your hands are washed lol your hands can have lots of bacteria too
Us older peeps only used our fingers and an occasional cotton bud to apply eyeshadows. And you kids throw money like crazy on overpriced stuff. 🤣
@@lipstickzombie4981 omg can you stop this GenZ bashing dear boomer.
@@lipstickzombie4981
Yes!!!
Good that i don‘t use any lol
Not all bacteria are bad. For instance, those small white colonies are likely Staph epidermidis, which is a normal flora of your skin. You can’t disinfect your skin either because these “good” microbes actually protect your skin from the bad ones.
this is why i wash my blender after every use. taking 5 minutes of my time everyday is better than havibg acne
I think I'll only use my hands from now. Too lazy to clean brushes every time!
Like it do!
👍
My blenders and brushes swims in the same sanitisers used in hospitals when doing thorough cleaning after every use
Yes! Throw that Barbicide around like glitter!
This is why I still only use silicone blenders. Much harder find, simple to clean.
You inputted so much into this video!! 😁
That's why I perfer brushes easy to clean and I don't get a look thats too airbrushed something so perfect can come off as fake .
Does anyone have any specific suggestions for cleaners?
My question exactly. I replace my sponges pretty regularly and clean my brushes with antibacterial soap ia that good enough?
Dr bronner's tea tree oil soap
alcohol
I use bar soap for doing dishes. Brush onto the soap, rinse, brush again, until the rinsing water has no color.
vinegar mix equal parts vinegar and water.
Can you do a video on recommended products for chest acne, pleaseeeee. I’ve tried everything. ❤️❤️❤️
The moment when I heard this I started running through my house and started cleaning more than a dozen stuff😂I’m glad listened to this but it may be cap
Then how to clean them ??😭 someone HELP 😫
Warm water and soap
Antibacterial soap and warm water
@@Jettas20 I do that and have found that Dawn dish washing liquid works really well after sanitizing with clorox wipes. An employee at Sephora told me about using dishwashing liquid. It cuts through the oils.
i like to use hot tap water and dishwashing soap after EVERY use to prevent the growth of bacteria especially in sponges which tend to retain moisture and, since they are porous in nature, are the perfect breeding ground for microorganisms.
I use very very diluted solution of fabuloso (disinfectant) and dawn dish soap to help break up all the grime. Shampoo/dish soap alone won’t kill bacteria.
Gen X laughing my ass off because I never got into the brush fad. Fingers forever baby
I’ve been washing mine before each application 😭 especially after taking my skincare more seriously
I have stuck to my fingers and still do to this day.
What worked back in the 90s still works today
Me running to wash my beauty blender🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️
And that’s why I don’t wear foundation, own sponges, brushes etc. it’s just so gross to me.
Not me looking at my brushes
Yipes! What is the best way to clean & sanitize them!
I needed to see this lol
Looks like Dr. Shah is disagreeing with what’s shown on the video. Hard to believe that cleaned brushes can still be that full of bacteria. 🤷♀️
Have you ever heard of anyone getting an infection from dirty brushes or sponges ? Wish he would have have given a verbal reaction to the video. 🤔
My guess would be that the moisture from the clean spray provided even better conditions for the bacteria to grow. Or an ingredient in there fed them
How should we clean our brushes?
@@Money-Resides use liquid soap and water or dishwasher liquid
It’s amazing how many videos I’ve watched of women using filthy brushes and beauty blenders, many times they have bad acne too. It’s made me paranoid so I wash mine A LOT.

Guess my new MO is ugly and slightly more awake.
He didn’t clean them very well lol
TY this really helped
Off to go clean my brushes and beauty blenders 🏃♀️💨
I always use my hands never been into using brushes dunno why
Brushes just feel like an extra step
Saw a “hack” recently that said to forego the brushes and use your hands for foundation bc your body heat makes it melt onto your skin better… Like hey, this is what I’ve been doing lol
Me, too
And that's why I always use my hands. I can always make sure they're perfectly clean.
Cleaning everything with rubbing alcohol/water/soap makes me feel safe 🧘🏻♀️
I'm really amazed at the little colonies of bacteria.
I expected a lot more bacteria honestly
How often should we be cleaning them?
Every time you use them.
