I loved his song when I was a kid. I grew up with Beethoven, Belafonte, Beatles, Bossa Nova, Soul, Funk, Motown, glam rock and electronic dance music. I love to see the evolution of music and also this mix of present (Black I'd Peas) and past (Sergio Mendez). It's fabulous how the newer generation pay their respect and add their touch to the masters who came before them and together build more music history.,

I love Sergio Mendez, I'm an old musician, but I totally get this. This is cultural exchange between generations. Young people are getting educated through 2 channels, theirs and the original. So is Mendez. Why stop the younger set from discovering the original? I can respect the Black Eyed Peas for even wanting to do this tune. Sergio most likely did it voluntarily so what's the beef? No one twisted his arm to my knowledge. It keeps his music alive to a younger audience, maybe they'll go see him do the originals sometime eh? Mendez is phenomenal and the group knows it. Besides, how can this be tacky of Mendez sanctioned it by participating? Surely he has class and judgement.
It seems to me they could have used more rehearsal. Comparing them to Brasil66 who sang this probably thousands of times before it was ever heard in the US is not really fair. Also I agree this might interest a new generation to listen to other Samba and Bossa Nova classics.
MrT Oldies I would never disparage Sergio Mendez. I, too am a great fan of his. My thought was he wanted to be present to keep the integrity of the song. If I didn't know the original, I would be clueless about this song. Oh and by the way, there's no such thing as an old musician. Artists of any kind NEVER grow old. We just aspire to higher levels.

Had a few albums of SM and Brazil 66 growing up in the 60s and this song was on the Look Around album. I like this mash-up and I believe the blonde in the background was one of the original singers in Brazil '66. If you want to see a really sexy version of this song, check out Nossa's version.

This is really good - when an artist does a cover version, it's great when they add their own style to it. This is a nice blend of rap and 60's Latin music. That's the legendary Lani Hall on backup vocals; Fergie hugs her at the end. The arrangement would sound better if Lani's voice were louder, the percussion were louder, and some treble EQ were added to give this version the punch of the original hit.

Thank you for pointing out Lani Hall. I thought that might be her but I wasn't 100% sure. She has aged very gracefully. I met Karen Phillip, the other original singer back in 1972. She's retired from the business now. One thing is for sure, Fergie spends a lot of time in the gym.

All these hateful comments are mostly based on prejudice. Sure you probably grew up to love the original, but this wasn't made for you or for the close minded people. It was rather a remake for the modern tastebuds... best of both worlds. I enjoy both this version and the original just as much, and I bet you I'm not as old as you, but I can at least act like I'm not still a child.

***** I'm a fan of old school hip hop as well, and it's always fun suddenly discovering the original sample of a song, I get the same reaction every time when I realize that I've heard the instrumental before somewhere. I've discovered many great soul/funk/jazz songs through hip hop. On another note, I really like the music that the channel "Majestic Casual" on CZcams puts out, in my opinion that is the future of music. Electronic and with influents from all kinds of genres. I once found a bossa nova sample on one of their songs.
