    @tobiashagstrom4168 Před 5 lety +250

    Well, to examine this question, for starters, how much respect could we say that deathclaws deserve? I guess we don't know very well how intelligent deathclaw are. There are/were some sentient ones that could talk and stuff in other games, but I think they were specifically and uniquely genetically engineered for that, so I don't know how the common deathclaw compare to them. Although I prefer to think they're not too stupid, especially since the one you return the egg to was smart enough to understand that you were acting out of benevolence. That should mean that it's able to understand the concept of acting selflessly, and that it's smart enough to be able to generalize that concept so that it can recognize and reciprocate it even outside its own kind.
    And the fact that the first deathclaw tracked the gunners down across the wasteland also seems to imply very persistent, goal-directed thinking, in addition to strong emotional attachment. If nothing else, we do know they're pretty social, which must imply at least some basic mammal-level intelligence.
    This likely capacity for intelligence and emotion means to me that it makes sense to think of them with some amount of respect, at least as much as a clever dog, maybe even as much as a parrot, dolphin or chimpansee, even when it's necessary to shoot them.
    Now regarding this quest, I agree that the utilitarian option is clearly to not return the egg. Sure, giving back the egg is pretty nice in of itself, but it just contributes to another deathclaw in the wasteland, which will kill humans or at least compete with them for prey. Even though it probably makes very little difference in the grand scheme, the wasteland is not a place that needs more predators, especially not ones that are so dangerous to humans.
    Although, there are other possible perspectives that could allow or require that you return the egg. If you're someone who sees morality more in terms of virtues, personal codes, specific principles of honor, holy rules about respecting sacred bonds such as that between parent and offspring, then you may think that it's more good to return the egg.
    You could argue that whilst deathclaws should generally be killed, the act of stealing an egg to sate the morbid gluttony of some rich dick is a kind of abominable perversion, a transgression so heinous that its undoing takes precedence over normal practical priorities. The deathclaws involved could then be allowed to live for now as an act of pure grace given the circumstances. Because even if they do harm someone in the future, you could stoically say that you are merely doing what's decent in the situation, and the culpability for any fallout of that act can be ethically exported to the people who made the situation happen to begin with.
    Or maybe you have a system of ethics that focuses on personal growth, in which case returning the egg may be an opportunity to learn a personal lesson about seeing the world a different way, about exercising altruism in a different way, about humility, a symbolic case-study on the dignity of life, etc. Or maybe you believe in karma, in which case returning the egg may simply be the most benevolent action in that situation, that would thus bring the most good to you and/or others, regardless of what would seem to be the likely technical consequences.
    And who knows, it's not entirely inconceivable that returning the egg could have some sort of positive impact, since the deathclaw parent respects you, maybe it will actually be less inclined to hurt humans in the future? Not likely, but not wholly impossible. Not that that's too much of an improvement though, deathclaws still have to kill things to live, and it's not as if this is going to kick off some sort of deathclaw veganism movement, so I guess it doesn't really matter.
    Anyway, whilst I think not returning the egg makes the most obvious sense, you can definitely justify it if your character has some kind of non-utilitarian philosophy, or if it ties into some supernatural belief. Or maybe your character returns the egg purely out of personal pity because they empathize with what it's like to have your child kidnapped, regardless of what their wider moral philosophy is in theory.

      Doesn't really matter because you can farm regular deathclaw eggs, best to just leave the egg in the nest cus regardless of the perks its a one shot deal anyway so its not like you can have more. The only lasting perk would be the recipe n the fact the finished product only weighs 0.1 which if you had a crap load of them would be a good replacement for stims, then again regular deathclaw omelets heal the same and mirelurk cakes heal even more damage and weigh the same and the ingredients are easy to get so its not even a practical thing to sell the egg for the recipe or to eat it yourself unless you just want to unlock the recipe for show. I find it more rewarding RP wise to put the egg back n leave it there :)

Also, I don't think Deathclaws are a major threat to human because the are normally found in isolated or heavily irradiated areas that human don't usually live. The bodies are likely from kills made while looking for it's clutch or eggs. But on a moral level how it what the mother Deathclaw does different from the Sole Survivors actions? The main character kills in order to find Shaun. The Deathclaw is a parent doing what it has to in order to save it's child.

    And if you let them, a few days later, you'll be called back to the area, and when you get there the egg hatches, but it imprints on you so it's useless to the guy, and he lets you keep it.

    IMO, the fact that the Deathclaw at the camp didn't attack you on sight is an indication that they're more intelligent than they appear. It's true the one in the building attacked on sight, but you also showed up when it was seeking vengeance for smashed eggs. In a fit of rage it wouldn't have known the difference between you and the other humans who smashed the eggs. This is assuming it was the Gunners who smashed them of course, since it would be unlikely the Deathclaw smashed it's own eggs. The one at the camp however could see that you had an intact egg, didn't attack immediately and then let you go after you returned it. To me that seems to indicate intelligence.
    Besides that I've killed way more humans than I have Deathclaws. They might look like giant scary monsters and attack you from time to time, but realistically speaking you're more likely to encounter a hostile human than you are a Deathclaw. It seems weird to "protect humanity from the scary Deathclaws" when you yourself have probably killed more fellow humans than that Deathclaw ever will. You can claim self defense because you're just trying to survive in the wasteland, but so is the Deathclaw when you think about it. I mean if you encountered a bear cub, would you kill it because it could grow up to be a full size bear who could potentially hurt someone?
    I do wish the game gave you a third option though. It would have been neat if you could keep the Egg and hatch it. A Deathclaw pet/companion would have been cool. I suppose if you get the "Wasteland Workshop" DLC, you could capture and tame a Deathclaw, but it would have been nice if this was already part of the game via this quest. I love Dogmeat, but if I could put some armor and saddle on a Deathclaw, I would totally do it. People would learn to fear me as I come charging into battle on my Deathclaw!

    • @sm901ftw
      @sm901ftw Před 7 lety +2

      Thing is while there are a lot more raiders than deathclaws, the number of kills per raider is much lower. The nest and Salem show what just two can do when they're angry/hungry, and given how fresh the corpses are thats just in the short term. Sure compared to the SS it's low, but the player characters in fallout have always been Lord Death of Murder Mountain. Even if you roleplay as a pacifist you're easily capable of slaughtering armies and changing wars. For your average human though, deathclaws are terrifying monsters, or at least a dangerous nuisance that could force you off your land and into the wastes.
      I agree there could've been a fourth option to keep the egg for yourself, but from an RP perspective it makes little sense. The SS has no idea deathclaws can be anything more than your average predator. Even if they did get the idea to tame a hatchling they sure as hell have no idea how to actually incubate the egg or raise the baby. It may not even be possible since the only successful examples are all on the West Coast decades before F4.

      neo bear Keep in mind one of those settlements was full of supermutants, and armed raider settlements are frequently wiped out by deatclaws too (like the place with the tower alarm). That sounds good, but the deathclaws aren't targeting these groups on purpose. If settlers had been there they'd just be even easier prey.
      And the only reason that deathclaw at the start didn't kill everyone in Concorde was because the SS was there with a minigun.

      Ancient humans didn't really know that wolves could be tamed and would become dogs.
      They did it anyway, and here we are with dogs and cats and cows and so forth. Remember the ancient cow was not an easy beast to manage, nor were wolves. Thus it makes logical sense from an RP point of view that the SS would think of it, he's a soldier for goodness sake, and it's hunters and soldiers who perfected the practice of taming animals first.
      Further as I posted above, the corpses you see strewn around are most likely the caravan of people there to steal the egg. The "Settler" is just a default NPC type, and I assume is meant to mean "local person who knew location of nest and was there to guide the Gunners", the Brahmin is there for transport, and the Gunners are there for the job. The record kills by a single lion by the way, is around 300 humans. In the real world. And yet we don't go out exterminating lion populations, or bears, or anything else.

    Gotta say, Ox, I'm a bit surprised by your view on this quest, though I do understand it, to a degree.
    While I certainly agree with much of what you said on morality, I think it's unreasonable to condemn the Deathclaw species due to the fact that they occasionally prey on humans. Does this mean bear or shark or crocodile young should be terminated at every opportunity on the off chance one may attack a person in the future?
    True, Deathclaws aren't a natural species, they are man-made monsters, but that could pretty much be said of all the mutated flora and fauna in post-war America. The natural order of the 21st century is long gone, and nature has compensated as best it can. At this point, Deathclaws are as much a part of nature's (unnatural) order as anything else in the wasteland, occupying an important role as one of it's top predators.
    Not to mention the obvious symbolism in this quest: The Deathclaw has lost both its mate and its child. The Sole Survivor, more than anyone, knows that pain, and to take this creature's egg to Diamond City to be made into an omelet for some rich snob... it just feels wrong.
    So needless to say, unless I'm roleplaying the heartless bastard type, I always return the egg to it's family.
    Not to mention, the Deathclaw Gauntlet is just beastly.

      Tell that to the quarry workers in new vegas. Go ahead and do a headcount for the number of people still alive at the shack south of it and tell me if there are enough people there to run a quarry.
      The reason you don't see them bother you unless you bother them is the way the game works. Enemies generally stay in one area. You could make the same argument for just about any enemy. That dragon on a mountain doesn't seem to be bothering anyone, but how many villages did it burn down just for funzies?
      Let's also not forget that the nest there was literally made of the remains of other poor people who were killed by the death claws. You expect me to believe that all the settlers, farmers, wastelanders, etc. all saw that pile of bodies and thought, "Yeah, that's a place I want to go to willingly"? Deathclaws are predators that often kill humans. They have no moral fiber and are not intelligent to the level of innovation. With the exception of that one town of them in Fallout 2, they should be made extinct.

      1. That's untrue for both the player in all games as well as the quarry workers that were minding their own business.2. Why the heck would a quarry worker steal a deathclaw egg?3. You completely ignored my comment on the dead quarry workers. In addition to those, do you expect me to believe that EVERY corpse that makes up that nest was someone that took something from a deathclaw?4. A good contrast to deathclaws are the giants in Skyrim. They subsist on their own animals. You can walk right by them without issue as long as you don't attack them or their animals. They've never been recorded to invade an area that's already inhabited, and THEY DON'T HAVE NESTS MADE OUT OF HUMAN REMAINS. Were some of those people the deathclaws killed bad? Sure, but they don't discriminate. They're just animals. Animals that hunt people. At least if we kill this death claw, we can bury the remains of all its victims.I haven't played Fallout 4, but do deathclaws ever attack settlements?

    After I finished listening to the holotape and found out what the gunners had done, I felt so much empathy for the deathclaw. It was on a nearly hopeless quest, tracking it’s quarry across the wasteland, looking for the child that had been stolen straight out of its arms. The parallels between the deathclaw and my character were uncanny and I found I couldn’t just sell the egg to get cooked. I still hadn’t made it to the institute yet, I was scavenging to make enough caps to buy fusion cores for my power armor so I could hunt down Virgil in the glowing sea. At this point I was really worried about Shaun, and I really wished that someone would just come out and bring me to him or give him back. So when I had this deathclaw egg, it felt like the chance to do what I wished one of the other characters had done for me. I brought it back to its nest, totally prepared to turn around and book it if Mama was angry. But she wasn’t. She just seemed glad to have her kid back. Maybe I’m just too into my video games, but it felt like the right thing to do. Loosing a child is unimaginable in the real world, and sad and uncomfortable in a video game. Even animals grieve. That’s why I returned the egg. One less grieving mother.

  • @crispincain9736

    I returned the egg, for a few reasons.
    1. Given that the mother was killed and most of the eggs destroyed, 1 new Deathclaw is negligible in the broad scheme.
    2. Most evidence points to Deatclaws being intelligent, at least on the same level as chimps or dolphins. As such, they tend to stay away from human settlements, unless either controlled or provoked. Which leads to...
    3. Willingham, his patron, the gunners, as well as most of the fresh bodies around the nest, were all engaged in an act which could be described as poaching, no pun intended. Taking eggs or body parts of wild animals is considered illegal today, and while the Deathclaw is certainly not endangered, she is intelligent enough to track down her eggs, and fierce enough to kill anything in her way. Who knows how many people would have died if she had held back until Diamond City?
    4. Finally...I don't know if I'm being paranoid, but I felt that, if I sold the egg, the father would know...the word would would spread, and soon, the Deathclaws around the Commonwealth would attack me on sight, not just because I'm on their turf and/or they're hungry, but also because they would know who I was and what I did...

      1. One deathclaw can wipe out a settlement!
      2. Old Olney and Sloan begs to differ. I would also question what evidence you have of their intelligence but given their danger, it's irrelevant. If chimps would aggressively hunt down any humans in sight I would advocate their destruction as well. Besides, deathclaws aren't a natural species, they're man-made biological weapons that serve no ecological purpose.
      3. This is plain nonsense. What government has declared deathclaws to be a protected species? And what government owns the land the nest is in? And don't worry, I killed the deathclaw parent to ensure she can't do what you suggest, though I doubt that she has the intelligence in the first place. They were derived mostly from the Jackson Chameleon which is, well, a lizard.
      4. You can kill the parent before delivering the egg to Wellingham...did you not know this? You killed one of the parents in the Museum so there's only one left that's near the nest...you kill her and there's no more parents. And the deathclaws around the Commonwealth already attack you on sight and will forever attack you on sight and will attack any other human on sight.

    I give the egg back. My reason, because it is her/his child and I am looking for mine. I have played 5 play thru's and have yet to see a deathclaw hunt a human down. Usually we stumble upon them and start shooting, or we attack each other on sight. Like any predator it and we attack when threatened or when protecting our offspring. As the Lone Wanderer we are hunting down the person who took our son not unlike this Deathclaw is hunting down the people who took its child, so we are not so different.

We are just a more evolved form of animal in my opinion. We kill to survive and for our children's future, and every other animal in existence does the same. Deathclaws are no exception to this. We kill them a any number of reason including food. We don't care if they have done anything morally wrong. We come first. Its how our brains are structured. In this light we are no different than them, and we have nothing to gain by killing the egg or even the mother.

Killing something just because of what it can do doesn't mean we should. We humans can end most life on the earth in a nuclear war. This would be more than enough cause for something else to end the human race. If killing in fear of somethings potential to kill was justified. Simply put you shouldn't kill out of fear of what it may become only for what it is. The deathclaw you mentioned outside of virgils cave isn't actively trying to kill anyone thus there is no reason to kill it.

And all those dangerous, wild irradiated animals have evolved into the non-human sentient species. Basically, Aragonian = Deathclaw. Morally speaking, if you're after the betterment of people, you should give the egg to the Deathclaw. The best means to have a peaceful relationship with Deathclaws would be domestication or some sort of symbiosis. The fact is that the Deathclaw could have just killed you to get the egg, or kill you after getting the egg, but it didn't. It learned that you can make an exchange with a human. Despite all the bodies, all the bones, the deathclaw did not turn violent when the egg was returned.
    The fact is, you take the first shot at the Deathclaw in every instance. You are the one betraying the transient episode of peace with a Deathclaw, not the Deathclaw. If you want to seed the grounds for a positive relationship with them, you would be reinforcing those interactions and foster trust. You chose not to do so here.
    One could have once said that there is no reason to feed a wolf because they are just hunters, always in packs, and would never benefit from working from humans. But then there were exchanges made, of food. It starts small, visiting the perimeter of a camp and requiring food. The animals can teach their young that, in desperation, they can actually turn to humans for help rather than for prey. This can evolve to become domestication.
    You killed that chance. You killed the peaceful relationship. What do you think of that?

      Facts and stuff so are a lot of quote “pure bred” dogs. Where is the natural habitat of a toy poodle? A purse? No we need them to be small and fluffy. So if we are talking abominations made by humans for a specific reason. Dogs and death claws are similar in more ways then one.

      @beoffjesos8503 Před 5 lety +3

      I agree with mike here, in every situation that specific deathclaw goes voilent is because of you. Behind the nest at the river you can find a yau guay drinking water, it will try to kill you at sight, the first time i did this quest i was at a very low level and ran back to the nest for protection, and me and the deathclaw fought of two yau guays side by side. Afterwards the deathclaw still remained neutral to me and nick, proving that it still was not hostile to me, even after i had seeked protection from it.

      @jacobc8036 Před 5 lety

      Anton Skitidetdu so they DO have moral thought and compassion. They only hunt for food. So they are just like bigger versions of Wolves from long ago. We should try to domesticate them instead of just murdering them for kicks.
