  • @ZeroMass
    @ZeroMass Před 9 lety +1

    So why was a fiber coupled pump used? Would this be better suited than a diode with wider emitter & shaped with prism pair and meniscus lens? I've gotten solid gains with the aforementioned, though im curious if there is still a better way. Nice work BTW, that thing is *HUGE!!* Regarding "copper is difficult" dont forget brass! Aluminum is easy but has a greater thermal expansion coefficient. If used in optical mounts and there is shift in temps during operation, you run into issues otherwise not seen when brass is employed.

      Probably not.
      A pulsed YAG laser without the doubler would be better. The IR wavelength would be less affected by the atmosphere, and the high peak power pulse would be easier to detect and time the two-way journey.

    the really insane thing is that they now sell, in a convenient non-technical consumer friendly package, 10-20 watt CW averaged DPSS lasers, usually in easy-to-maintain performance levels of a few hundred nanosecond pulsed operation, for a few hundred dollars, completely turnkey witht power/control. You can get even better deals if they are flashlamp SS and the cost of the lamps is dirt cheap as well. Thank all those laser hair and tattoo removal strip mall locations for driving the demand. And in terms of the mass production, Its true that this occurs in China, but its incorrect to assume that its a cheap commoditization effect like in other areas. China has maintained a surprisingly strong laser industry for a long time, in some ways "predating" the explosion of the last 20 or so years. For a long time Chinese companies were the only source of nonlinear optical crystals needed to do upconversion into the deeper UV around 200 nm or less.

    • @TechIngredients
      @TechIngredients  Před 10 měsíci

      Your numbers are a little off. 1-2 watts maybe, or a few thousand for 10-20.
      Flashlamps are dirt cheap?

      @@TechIngredientsGreat video as usual.
      I too was shocked when I looked last week at YAG laser. There were about half a dozen professional and the same number of budget brands of flash lamp Nd:YAG tattoo removal lasers available from China with prices starting from US$400, the water cooled laser head is available as a spare part for US$150 which I thought was the price of the laser rod alone. Just a few years back I saw nothing at these prices.
      The complete units come with an inline crystal holder to get 532nm. All of the units provide a raw beam of about 4-6mm but seem to have a rear reflector. Not very high quality but a great source of parts for DIY experimentation.
      Some also have another attachment that is said to provide 1320nm but I don't know how that is done unless it is a second laser crystal, do you have any ideas on what trick they are using?

    Alright, Here is my deal.
    I am a cnc milling guy, before that I was a cnc service tech, and before that, an auto mechanic. That is me in a nutshell.
    My business would benefit greatly if I can laser etch and anodize titanium.
    I know too much about machinery to pay the prices these people are asking.
    I want to make my own.
    I can build a cnc gantry, but I know absolutely nothing about lasers.
    From what I can tell I would want something like 50 watts to at least to engrave titanium, and maybe cut some other metals.
    Where can I learn how to pump focused light down a fiber to a tip that can move?

      @TechIngredients  Před 6 lety +2

      No, I actually meant 2watts, but I was talking about a particular market of relatively inexpensive Chinese DPSS lasers that are frequently used by laser projector manufacturers and DIY builders. 2kW is about right for the largest state of the art DPSS lasers available if money is no object.

      Fair enough, but with a billion dollar budget they better be producing enormously higher powers. Personally, I am not impressed with what the weapons laser programs have achieved so far. Nevertheless, of all the branches of the military, the Navy is the most likely to deploy usable systems when their free electron, ship based lasers cross the megawatt threshold. Thanks for your service...and I mean that.

    thank you for the videos, but something to consider ! you can turn the pumps and fans off !
    you videos are way too nosiy when it is not needed ! i know when you are operating them, for demonstration, they need to be running, but rarely you show their operation ! watching a double digit 0 on the display has no value, not to forget the sound of fan is so anoying !
    maybe there are some device that takes time to be operational and needs the pump to run for a long time, hint, you can film the operation first, then turn off the pumps and fans, for the main video and talks, and in editing you can switch the order.....
