1969 Porsche 911 T: Maximum Pleasure, Minimalist Package

  • The 911 T was the most stripped-down model in the range, and arguably the most pleasurable experience because of it. No excessive luxuries or functionality to take away from a pure driving experience.

    I like how he says the 2.0T goes just as fast as he needs to go. It's refreshing to see another early 911 owner who doesn't feel the need to update every 2 liter car to a bigger motor. In many respects driving these early 911s has more in common with driving a modern Miata or Toyota 86 than driving a contemporary 911 supercar. Somebody once pointed out that it's a lot more fun going fast in slow car than driving slow in a fast car.

      I owned an STi and a 350Z when I was younger. I have more fun driving my old BMWs now, than I did with those cars. Unless you are tracking them every weekend, there's really no point in having all that horsepower. Enjoying your daily drive by maxing out your car's potential, and feeling everything your car does is the way to go.

      Definitely agree with this. I have a full bolt on Mk5 GTI with a Golf R turbo swap and suspension goodies. While it's fun as hell to drive, my 2015 Mazda 3 HB (2.0 6MT) is a very fun car as well. Great turn in and it makes you work for it since it's just 155hp vs my GTI making over 320chp. It's also just over 2800lbs.

  • @ArriGaffer
    @ArriGaffer Před 6 lety +25

    I had a 1970 T, umm, oh crap, that was 37 years ago! They were a substantially different car than the 69. Both mechanical bits and the body were upgraded in many places. At a glance however, they both were the same very light, adequately powered fun cars. For me it was a project that needed to be turbo charged. There were no turbo kits in those days. I had to make the intake and exhaust manifolds, and the muffler all from scratch. Taking care to match the body exhaust cutout. A vac/boost gauge went inside the one blank instrument pod. Clocks must have been optional. I used a new tech (for the time) small industrial turbo that had nearly no lag. The various carb setups I tried were finicky so I took it apart and milled a bit off the pistons and notched the intake ports to fit a 3 liter FI on the 2.2 liter engine. That setup worked perfect on pump gas. It was lowered subtly and got an air dam I had a bunch of fun with it running away from the camarbirdtangs at speed. Really a fun car to drive! Responsive as heck. And bunch of unique sounds inside and out. Like hearing through the body the dry sump system work after corners not to mention that 6!
    Fun times.
    After a few years it had run it's course and I was feeling like it was a liability that I couldn't properly care for so I found a buyer. He was more show than go and didn't want to pay for the turbo so I had new engine tin handy for this eventuality. See I had built the mods without altering anything unreplaceable. Bolt the carbs and stuff on with new tin and shazam! Back to stock. The lowered compression and port notches had no appreciable affect as the Ts had milder cams anyway.
    This video, very well executed BTW, sure stirred up a bunch of thoughts I haven't had in years. Kinda bittersweet today. Well I guess it was better to have done these sort of things than not.
    Sorry to bend you ear, hope you enjoyed the story.

      Agreed. Far more charming . It sort of sits there like a frog while smiling at you. Dont like any of the models that came after the mid nineties when they moved from air cooled to water cooled. Once it was no longer the trusted old hard wearing air cooled engine it lost its charm and distinctive sound . Porsches now dont sound like porsches anymore and they are way to fat and flash.

    The title and description words are nice ear butter but as an owner of multiple Porsches the E and S are superior cars by their equipment - if you think “excessive luxuries” are things like higher compression, better cams, mechanical fuel injection, better brakes/suspension, Fuchs alloys, Recaro Sports seats then you miss the point of a Porsche. The S was the car Porsche wanted to build, the T was the car without all the expensive goodies that make these cars perform so well made to fit a lower budget. That being said any 911 can be configured with bolt on parts from any equivalent year, the beauty of this platform, so you can build your own but let’s not tell the viewer that the T is really the one you want because that would be like saying a stripped down minimalist house in south LA is better than the excessive luxuries of a house in the Hollywood hills.

    I loved this video. In my humble opinion the greatest car ever made is a Porsche by Singer. Unfortunately my bank account will never support such a passion. There has to be another way. Could a 911T be it? Thank you for opening this door...

      As an the original owner of a '72S with over 300k miles of "spirited" driving, this video comes as close to describing the pleasure the early 911's are to drive. There aren't that many cars that can be driven to the track, raced flat out at 7,300 RPM, and driven back home. The air cooled engine sound alone is so unique and coupled with free flowing exhaust, well,....
      We now need to know about the stablemate sepia 911!
