This is a pretty sweet unknown Sega game that most people probably recognize in its bootlegged form. Main differences from the bootleg is in the final stage, time is NOT renewed on each screen, making it much more tense and difficult.

For those confused by the 60+ Gold Get, it's a bug in the game that's being exploited.
The 6 in the first digit is a symptom of the Z80 carry flag being accidentally set before a DAA instruction which calculates the amount of gold to add.
This isn't an intended feature.
Best Wonderboy ever and one of the best out of the arcade games era.
This version is trash. It's a lot better on the Sega Master System.

By switching your character's direction rapidly when you jump into a coin spot, there is a chance you spawn a high value coin (65-69).
Put this comment at the top because it is the same doubt to many people.
on the xbox you need to assign a button to wiggle and that'll make them worth more if you wiggle/jump underneath them. Make lots of quick saves.
I had full legend and I died at dragon and the game reset even though I had nine credits in

@@martymartin2894 I was on my home arcade emulator so no quick saves btw it has free credits sad that the dam game resets well I didn’t trust the dialogue when entering the final castle so rip me (that was the only time I ever had full legend
This takes me back to my days as a kid in Korea. Back then there were guys who would absolutely kill this game and somehow knew all secrets with no internet or other reference to speak of. That being the case, the fact that it was about 50 won per game (about 5 cents?) back then, I'm sure they got plenty of practice.

Me too, i used to finish the game with a coin and knew every secret coin available, i learned watching other play and with a lot of practice. 80's game were tough but linear, once you know how to move and what to expect is kinda easy beat the game.
elaith80 Same here lol. And back then I had no clue about the story or the name of the items, all in Japanese. Just learned by try and error and watching others. Just being a simple minded innocent kid with one goal, to finish the game with one coin lol. Good times

It's interesting watching how the end of this game ties in with the start of Wonderboy 3: The Dragon's Trap on the Master System.

always wondered why dragons trap started the way it did and you had to fight the mecha dragon!

The last parts are very intense. When you get only half heart left. Amazing gameplay.

Full Legendary I see.
During my playthrough of it, I somehow missed the Legendary Shield ... I also missed the last part to upgrade my shield so.. Leather Shield all the way! At least it was fabulous purple!

Here's a game that needs a dragon's trap style remake.
Use to play this game in the late 80's at an old pizza place in Bondi Beach (across the road from the beach) Reg's Pizza (now turned into a sushi restaurant).

Amazing game I played in Korea as a kid. There was no internet back then, but players still knew a ton of secrets. This game is chock full of them.
AH, this IS my favorite arcade game. Love it so much, I've made two arcades just to play it. Love doing speed runs on this game. lol you kept giving me heart attack by passing up coins and going back. PS. I think it might be the Ver. I play on, but if you clear the stage after you beat death in 1st state, you'll get more points. IDK if that's what you're going for, but yeah.

when i was a kid, i used to play this game every visit to the arcade... it took me about 45 minutes to complete... what i don't get though; why the player here buys the purple shield & armor while he has money for the better version... i always bought the best available so i could end up with the legendary armor, shield, shoes quite early & the legendary broadswoard at the later part in the game..
for those who doubt; it's really no cheat to get lots of coin on the clouds/buildings/hidden drops... i knew this trick when i was 8-9 yrs old in the '80s. In my opinion this is the best wonder boy game of the series, and it was, together with bubble bobble my favorite game of all time (ps: for bubble bobble also exists "tricks" that give you more power than a normal player who doesn't perform the trick)
Back in the days i also had a sega master system, this game on that system was not a 1:1 clone; there were subtle differences which made me love the original much more... this game will be in my heart forever!
I'm playin' this on the xbox. how do you get extra coins? I know its got something to do with wiggling, but is it a timed wiggle?
Plus, it's available on switch.
You can buy the heavy armor (100 coins) cheaper if you choose the light (purple) armor first instead of the knight armor (150 coins). That’s why.

with the shoes it's not that way, i believe you have to buy a grey pair if you start with the purple ones. while starting with yellow gave faster acces to the legendary pair

IT's odd that the ending is more like Wonder Boy III on the Master System, where as the SMS version of Monsterland just ends.

I remember watching someone in a milk bar finishing this game when I was a kid.
I played this last night and found it very hard:
Your attack doesn't have much range and enemy patterns require precise timing.
The hourglass turns quickly and takes a whole heart each time, so you cannot grind for gold and
have to get all that extra gold in the minimum time possible.
It is really designed to be practiced over and over from the beginning until you can clear it in a single run through like this.
You tell very precicely what makes this game harder and more interesting than an average "rainbow islands". I love this game too and can only agree. By the way, I got interested in this game watching someone in a canteena playing it for like 40 minutes with 1 coin to reach a high level.
Also IMHO a game that forces you to practice over and over again, setup in a profit-orientated arcade machine, shows the perfection of this game design in another viewing angle. Reminds me of the arcade game P47.

The first screen up to Death was practically copy-pasted for _Wonderboy (SMS IV/Genesis V) in Monster World._ The layout is practically identical.

There's an MMA fighter called Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson.
So what I was thinking is to make a Romhack called Wonderboy in MMA Land where instead of Sword, Shield, Boots and Armor, it's MMA gloves (Sword), Training Pad (Shield), Shoes and Training Gear (Armor).
Instead of Monsters, it's other fighters from MMA.

And maybe you could achieve an even better score by playing the bug-free version. It's not officially in MAME but the fix is available somewhere on the Net. The MAME version has that weird "I shoot magic weapons as fast as I can" bug.

Andrea Babich on the master system version i thought the second dragon was the main dragon and the first 1 was a different 1 before the real dragon but looking at this it was the main dragon all along as he just transformed into a more powerful form and stronger boss
Benjamin Mathias the tactic i used on the master system when he transforms into his silver form i wait for him to breathe his fire i jump jump and hit him and repeat that sequence until he's dead but normally i had plenty of magic to attack him with so i just used that ive got this version on ps3 but i havent reached the dragon yet
what's the rom's name? In my emulator, I used the Japan version wbml. But the English one, wbmlvc don't work!

Does anybody knows if this tricks of gold work also on ps3?? I never have enough coins to buy the best equipe and not even reach the last level with 10 hearts. :( if i do not use the tricks will I be able to buy anyway the legendary equipment?

When I was young, I was finishing this game with more than 5000 gold and just the basic equipment. There have a lot of tricks to finish the boss with full life. For the last boss, just jump and hit by jamming it against one of the wall. Beaten in 30 seconds max

This game is hella tight
Why are many of the hidden gold coins giving like 65+ gold most of the time? Is it the difficulty setting? The SMS and PC Engine versions never seem to give THAT much!
The interface, controls, UI, and design prove this to be one of the most influential games of all time. Most modern games are just a 3d version of this
A few differences I experience:
1. The hidden gold caches in your game give you more than 60 pieces of gold, but in my game, they give less than 10
2. It appears the version I play, I keep on missing the boss and get hit by boss when I actually hit them (graphically I hit them, but I am the one who lose HP)
I know others have mentioned the wiggle gold trick, I don't see a way to max equipment without that reasonably... about #2 - there is a very short window of invulnerability you can exploit immediately when you get a positive hit on an enemy including bosses - so long as your hit registers first you should not take a hit for about a second-ish
I bought a Japanese PS2 to play this game. This is supposed to get released on the Nintendo Switch in the Sega Ages line (according to Wikipedia). Fingers crossed....

Is there a point to upgrading your shield if the basic one stops projectiles just as fine?

this game along with ghosts and goblins are the epitome of platformer fun! the only downside I see for this game is that its jump are not as the ghosts n goblins jump which are pre fixed aka realistic, meaning you do have control of your jump momentum in mid air (which I don't like) this kind of jump momentum control only worked best in Super Mario Bros.

To earn some trophies one of them ask to get all the hystoric equipment (but i do not know which is the storic one..i don't think i have to buy all swords , all shields and so on...) and the second question is : kill one high power ghost (they are the grey small ones. but i just meet red's . What do you do to front the grey ghosts??) thanks.
Sorry just one more question : to get 65 gold on... is necesessary to use the power? i see you throw the tornado against wall or enemy .
Hey Napoli , regarding your first question 1) the historic equipment are called "Legendary" in the game , there is a Legendary Sword, Legendary boots , Legendary armor and Legendary Shield. In the video you can see how the player is getting them. You need to follow the correct order like he does , in order to get them all. 2 ) The grey small ghost can only appear in specific parts of the game , check what the player of the video is doing after 26:30 and 29:30 . Usually you need to kill the red ghosts first and then the grey ones will appear. 3) To get 65 gold it is more easy and usual to get them with the magic tornado power. You can get them also if you jump and press "left" "right" "left" "right" several times before you fall on the ground, but its more difficult. I hope this helps you :)

Use mame on a pc. It works fine. You will need a digital joystick with at least 2 buttons or play with the keyboard.

+Rivalani Hlangwani There are spots that drop 3 coins (one with 15+). there are four main tricks to getting 60+ coins. if you jump and switch the direction within a second of coin's spawn. By spawning a sub weapon before a jump, getting pushed into an enemy, and by landing on coin while pressing jump and sword at the same time AS you spawn another coin. So far the last one can only be used at the 15coin's spawn. hope this helps! :)

Hey Seahawk0027 , did you know that there is actually a THIRD secrete door at the castle right before the last Labyrinth ? I mean right at the start you can see the FIRST door and after that you enter a secret door (1) there is ANOTHER one right next to it (2) which is the only part where are 3 doors in the row and you missed it in your Walkthrough.
In this door you can buy an ELIXIR...which i see you did not have in your video at this video and you can always use an ELIXIR :P
