Real, without being unkind. I dig it. Good energy for someone who has to deal with grieving people and caring for their deceased loved ones. Calm, informative but not distant.

The only mortician I knew was a raging alcoholic. He worked in a small town, and had to bury a lot of locals he grew up with. More than he thought he would have to, around his age even. The guy was a complete wreck. This was about 10 years ago and I DOUBT he's still alive now. He was almost in his 40s, late 30s. I'm like 100% sure he ended his life.
This guy makes it seem like it's no pressure or emotional toll, but if that's the case he's a sociopath which explains his detached "charisma"
@@jkeezy93 yeah, most morticians are depressed druggies or alcoholics, because they know a ton of the people they grew up, dated, loved, were family with. They see all these people they care for dying young and their tasked with preserving the death. I can only imagine the toll it takes. This man is no doubt a train wreck, but he’s learned how to hide it well.

Victor, if you see this, please know that you helped me get through a close friend's passing. He was young like me, and you never expect something like this to happen.
During the viewing before the funeral, I noticed that his cheeks were pink and rosy, he didn't look caked in make-up and he simply looked asleep. I immediately thought about the things you mentioned about the red liquid and how it's used to bring color to faces. I also remembered how you talked about why morticians place the left hand over the right.
All of those things were going through my head as I saw my good friend laying in the casket. And you know what? Knowing that he had received such good care because you detailed how bodies are to be handled and cared for brought some peace to my heart. Thank you, Victor. 🙏🏿

My grandpa passed away after an excruciatingly long time in the hospital, he was only the ghost of himself by the time he was gone, and all of us while being somewhat relieved that he was finally out of his suffering (if you've ever witnessed a loved one in a constant state of pain, you know what I mean), we did not want to remember him like that, and at first we wanted a closed casket so that other people wouldn't see him, because it was simply not fair to him...the mortician however reassured us, and did such an amazing job at preparing him that when we saw him in the casket we almost couldn't breathe, he looked more alive there than in his last months, so peaceful and serene that I fe it was almost therapeutic to us.
I remembered Victor's videos, and same as you I felt better thinking of the care that the mortician must have put into doing such a great job and felt more grateful for it.

This guy is the definition of charisma. He takes a topic that can be incredibly morbid and depressing, and finds a way to make it fascinating and even artistic. He could narrate paint drying and I'd be engaged.

@@Calistarius79 that is part of the appeal. Dramatic irony! When the criminal is on the ground looking up at him and asks "Who are you?" He will say "Im the Mortician." Telling him the truth indirectly. Its funny.
Fun fact: rigor mortis is the result of your body no longer being able to control the amount of sodium in your muscles, which allows muscle contraction, and no longer producing ATP, which breaks the connection making the fibers contract. So you end up stuck in a contracted position until the proteins that make up your muscles start to denature (break down) themselves.

i agree when he said "you can help a family a way nobody else can" the funeral director/mortician for my grandmother was amazing. she looked beautiful and so peaceful. she didnt look scary or dead at all. truly like she was just sleeping. he was also so extremally kind. explained everything that was happening, what would be happening next. truly amazing people. i think it is such an under appreciated job.

As a funeral director, huge applause for Victor. We all have our little quirks, tips, and tricks of the trade, but I believe every answer he gave was spot on! You can tell he is a true professional.
I'd love to see him react to the mortuary assistant game and give his thoughts on accuracy and what not. Better yet I want to see him play it.

I have a sweatshirt that says “Future Corpse” and am headed to mortuary school in the fall. Morticia Addams would be proud of us both. Jokes aside….losing both parents within two months at age 15 really has a lot to do with going into the profession.

I recently lost my 2-year-old niece to RSV and we had an open-casket funeral for her. Everything that was talked about in these videos was in the back of my mind while I saw how peaceful she looked laying there. I'll never forget having to bury her so young😔

you get used to just turning off your brain when you are treating bodies that are heavily mutilated. or, by the way, those that pass too young.... those are way harder to deal with than someone who's body has been (partially) damaged. its better to just turn off your brain, and fix it, then once you are done, look with pride at being able to give the relatives a proper last goodbye.
Oh, and a lot of morbid humor between colleagues helps aswel.

@@guillermocuadra8272 i don't think it's indifference, it seems to him what he does is helpful for the friends and family of the deceased. So in a way him working on someone he knows is him helping the friends and family of that person and in a way helping the person who passed away too. And it does feel nice if you know you are helping a friend or family.
When someone dies,everyone wants to help the deceased person's family. But usually you can't do much. By taking care of the body he is helping them.
There’s a rather local mortician who specialized in children’s funerals. When I talked to her she said she’ll ask the family the child’s fav show and then while prepping the body, she plays the show. Her belief is the soul sometimes watches their body, and she believe the fav show and comfort item being in the area helps the child’s soul. It’s actually really nice.

The “your there to help” line is big. That’s the answer I give when people ask the same about working with hospice patients. This stuff happens either way but I’m at least helping making it more palatable. Really resonated with me!

Not terrified about the idea of “death”, but instead I hate reading/listening to things relating to flesh & blood like what morticians/doctors do to a body.

Honestly heartbreaking to hear, so glad he turned out well educated, well spoken, well dressed, and to have genuine care for what he does. That kind of trauma at such a young age is enough to destroy anyone.

Seems like the kind of thing that’s gonna either turn you into a psychopath, or a well-adjusted mortician, and perhaps not a single other option lol. Here's a weird question I'd like answered.
What would be the longest time between a body having been found and a coroner actually working on it to be displayed open casket?
Like can you have a body that had been sitting out for 3 or more days and still clean it up for the family!??
Depends on the environmental factors, cause of death and be a factor as well. But the sooner any preparation is done, the better the results.
I remember an episode of Crossing Jordan in which a body was perfectly preserved in a sealed box in the (cold) ocean for something like 10 years. That one always seemed a bit far fetched

Americans might also have antique zombies/skeletons roaming the land. It’s the norm here for a grave to be a final resting place that shouldn’t be dug up for any reason. So we probably have our fair share of undisturbed graves dating back literally 400 years. So if modern American zombies are all buried in sealed caskets with sealed jaws, our zombie apocalypse could just be the skeleton war.

Idk ive also grown up losing a lot of people and going through about a funeral or two a year and I honestly think its given me a much better grasp on death and accepting it than my peers. Obviously its sad and every death is different but idk that’s just life? Its okay

It's normal if you're part of a big family..... Uncles, cousins, grandparents. It'd be near impossible to reach adulthood without attending a couple of funerals.
I do think he doesn't see it as a sad thing (anymore), and rather, as he said, found a thing he feels he should help with. Turning that sadness into a calling is a strong motivator by all means, I'd say.

I watched these videos back in June of 2022, as after my granny died i was distraught and didnt know what to do. But after watching this i felt so much better knowing my granny was treated with so much respect. It was also especially hard as she was only 56.
I am so glad that I ran across your blog and I must say that I appreciate these wonderful questions and your answers. I think it is so important that we can possibly start excepting death as part of life it’s going to happen to all of us and I think this might help to neutralize the fear for many people.
