Metal Detecting - 1800's Swimming hole

- This dig took place around a 1700 and 1800's swimming hole, where even the families of the elite involved in the town's business and political affairs would frequent .
On any given 90 degree plus summer day, people would come here to cool down from the sometimes dangerous effects of the heat .
They would come in winter as well, to enjoy their probably newly discovered sport of ice skating .... The surrounding shoreline is now covered in dense brush, trees and thorn bushes, which is a good indication that the ground and it's 1800's contents is generally undisturbed, and was spared the hand of progress which usually wipes an area clean of all historical artifacts .
There is also an adjacent wooded area along side this water hole, which was the home site of one of the town's first settlers, where in a later generation, the home style mansion was converted into the local poor house for the less fortunate within the community.
All in all, the ground has been undisturbed .... how many metal detectors have hit this place over the years, I don't know .... but never have I come to a site, where nothing is left in the ground, because other metal detectors have been there before .... there's always something there .
Thanks for watchin, and good luck on your next hunt . - Věda a technologie
music sucks...
Really ?... how about this one little girl --->> czcams.com/video/vo9Fja5x04o/video.html
Ha ha ha haaaa!
Thanks Newdis,
I know what you mean about big old trees, and why we all like them.
There is a tree on one of my metal detecting sites that I have an 1800's photo of when it was only a few years old.
To know that tree was there, in that time in History is a great feeling .
Have a good weekend my friend .
Love that old-time violin folk music along with the lore of yesteryear's old, long-lost, long forgotten reminders of the distant past. Thanks Wild Bill.
I smoked 2 packs a day for 40 years .
I used Chantix to quit and succeeded . I been smoke free now for 1&1/2 years and do not miss it at all . Chantix does what they advertise . You can get a coupon on line given by Pfizer for $75.00 off . Loved your video . Keep up the good work .
***** Until your next doctor's appointment! Oh, wait, you must not believe in going to the doctor!
Thanks
I had my third stroke August 29 2014 . Smoked 3 packs a day some times for 40 years . I haven't had a cigarette since made up my mind that's it I quit . Haven't had one since ...
three patches cold turkey 8/14/14 smoke free , you got to have motivation I guess .
JIMinBama1 chantix is a miracle drug..I smoked 35 years and I've been smoke free for 5....thanks chantix
You know what would be even more awesome than your finds? If you brought a bag with you to pick up trash along the way, and if you didnt just throw your cigarette butts on the ground, bring it in, bring it out.
Mind your own business. You handle your world.
holy shit that music! "so i got drunk, my wife left me, i crashed my pickup truck, and the dog goes baaaaaaaawwww"
Aww man I immediately liked this video the second I turned it on. I love ol Dee-wight! It don't get no better than that.
That song at the end of the video that most of us recognize from Ken Burn's Civil War saga, is that the Ashokan Farewell? Love the tune whatever it is called and it is so appropriate here.
+jaxflfreebird Yes sounds like it, my dear mothers burial tune . Thanks for reminder.
Oh man!! 8:20....what a great looking place to detect. Plenty of shade & old trees! Lucky you.
I agree Ron ... music, composers, singers and musicians
come from a very special place in this world .
And most times Life, and the History of the coins and Relics we find, is what the song is all about my friend .
Have a great weekend .
Appreciate you letting us tag along on CZcams for some of your digs.
...that 1898 dime is awesome to find !
It never gets old does it. That barber was just waiting for you. Great to see the live save. Awesome digs!
I hear ya Gary .....:)
Their hearts are in the right place my friend .
Have a great weekend .
Yes indeed, the "hand of progress" you mentioned in your video description not only wipes an area clean of all historical artifacts (as you very politely put it), but in my words, the hand of progress completely rapes any history that is left. Sadly, there really isn't much left. Great job on finding this site and sharing it with all of us. This is really special, as there just aren't places like this around much anymore. Few and far between.
You need an LED. Putting cigs on the ground and matches is a bit risky but your a big boy. I'm sure you know what your doing. Good finds! Thanks for the vid.
Good finds bro, Love the violin music, very nice. Thanks. heard some Dwight Yoakum in there too.
Rarely do i meet really good people like you Wild Bill. Thank You for sharing the adventure.

BILL .
Thanks Ann and Bec,
Looking forward to watching your very interesting Gold hunts.
Have a great week my friends .
Hard to imagine how simple life was back then .
A harmonica was played, a candle lit the night,
people dressed warmly to protect from the cold,
and horses walking by slowly, on a soft dirt road,
Must have been very quiet back then .
Cool deal Bill, that '98 Barber is in great shape!!!
Thanks Wayne,
Have a great weekend my friend .
Thanks John,

Mate ,I loved the violin ! Baught a tear to my eye ! :) fuck the haters ! Nice work brother ,peace from Australia .
You've got a whole pond there you can wash things off with. I never understand why metal detectors don't take a half gallon of water and a pan along to wash things off with in the field. Essential kit IMHO. Its a lot less rough on the object then rubbing it with your finger.
CHOPPERGIRL AIRWAR I was thinking the same thing. I bring a plastic container in my bag and put all my dirty finds there rather than rubbing them. Once I get near some water, I wash the finds clean. Saves scratching a nice old coin.
+CHOPPERGIRL AIRWAR Water? Masonry cleaner! Fizz, Fizz, clean.
+CHOPPERGIRL AIRWAR I don't even have a metal detector but I immediately understood that a flashlight and some water would come in very handy. I'm wondering how much money it would take to set me up in such a hobby. I don't need the best or most expensive metal detector, just a good one. It looks like fun. Yeah, you have to understand some people are going to think you're a dork, but I think most guys over 45 have grown up to where they won't care too much if the appear to be dorky. Young people are too worried that they won't look hip or cool. That all changes when you get old, fat, have kids, get divorced or simply have the perspective of an older person. For much of our life we know we are not old. In the rest of our life we have to admit we are older, boobs and asses sag, muscles sag, it's harder to "get it up and to keep it up", we have wrinkles and we have grown tired of the bullshit of having to go through worrying about how we appear to others.
Great video and some nice finds !
Thanks ... I haven't looked it up but surprisingly they aren't valued as much as they should be .... a few dollars at best .
I think they're a real work of art, especially the reverse side ... wish today's coins could look like that .
Have a great weekend .
I enjoyed the video, great music, storys and finds.
Love this video. Thanks for sharing it.
Great music. Nice finds. Keep up the good work!
Excellent! Very nice finds.
If only that swimming hole and old trees could talk. I would love to know the history of this place. Clearly a place that brought much joy to many people over all the years. Sad how it is seemingly abandoned and no longer a gathering place. Times were so much more innocent and simple than they are today. These days life has so much stress, so many worries, and most young people's idea of a good time is lighting up the crack pipe. Sad, so very sad.
Cool finds man. Nice work! Keep enjoying life!
Thanks Stacy,
Have a great weekend my friend .
BILL .
Love your passion. How about an LED head light instead of matches.:)
That button was on some ladies fav dress its history coming alive. Good stuff keep it up.
Thanks DiggingMichigan,
Have a great Memorial Day weekend .
BILL .
The button is from a time, where only candles lit the night my friend,
I think the thread somehow lends a personal connection to the person
who used it last .... you would enjoy this Paula,
you should try it sometime ... Even without a detector, you can visit old home sites, and still find incredible things .
Good luck, and let me know if you start hunting so I can watch to see what you find .....:)
Love what you are doing, I'd love to try as well. But be careful dropping those matches and cigarettes! ;)
Nice finds fella, well done, persistance pays.
Beautiful dime! Great button too!
Love the Ashokan Farewell at the end
