This is genuinely the kind of Superhero story I love, a smaller story with writing that feels like just the right balance between serious and tongue in cheek. It really lacks the smugness I see in a lot of superhero adaptations.
The animation also perfectly evokes older Superhero cartoons, but looks much smoother and more pleasing to the eye.

It is a pleasure that I got this chance to send this message to you. I saw your film Sprouting Orchids recently as of about a half an hour ago and it is presently 3AM in the morning Eastern Standard Time. Everything on that filming 🎥 related to me in my film project. There was only two differences. I made sure to pay everyone in the project and I never had a chance to finish it. The Cinematographer was given a big opportunity elsewhere and left the Director hanging so that left me and my film high and dry.
I felt so bad for everyone who were a part of the project and looking at the incomplete but promising film scenes put a smile on my face at the same time hurt as it was never completed. Seeing your take on Sprouting Orchids it kind of gave me a renewed confidence to continue to push forward. I saw some of your videos and wanted to ask you, how does it compare in making an actual film to an animated film?
Is an animated film more feasible?
I started to convert my movie into a novel but looking at the animation I really like that direction.
I was thinking maybe I could do that and the novel simultaneously. I send my thanks in advance for any advice you may have.
This video feels like it was ripped straight out of the 1960s. It has that old school cut-rate vibe (in a good way). The passion for this project is quite evident. I’m excited for the possibility of future episodes.

Dragnet style.
What I like best about this is that it feels like one of those good old superhero stories from before the ridiculous spectacle creep. It's not about saving the world or, heck, the entire universe, it's just this one rich client who has had a burglary. Granted, it grows into something more when it turns out there's a nefarious organization involved, but it still feels down-to-earth to me.
edit: oh, and that when it fades to black you can still see his eyes. That too :p.

@@Grayson-tk5hn Yeah, that's usually because it's easier to imagine something like lower stakes because that's what we're familiar with. Higher stakes -- planet, solar system, galaxy, the universe, or god-forbid, the multiverse -- are usually harder for readers to imagine and, therefore, harder to pull them in.
@@chummy_lecternmore likely that when a huge studio like marvel raises the stakes to a universal level we know that there is no way the universe actually gets destroyed because no more money for marvel (see eternals) so our investment drops to zero

It's nice that we finally get to see what Cat-Man would be like during his prime way before he got introduced in _Fairly Oddparents._

Gianni doing his detective voice is a great match for Cat-Man.
I do wonder just how sustainable from a plot perspective the 9 lives gimmick is, it's a very OP power but that hard limit means that it has to be used sparingly and at moments when it maximizes the drama, but in the other hand it has to be used or it loses its charm as a hook. Kinda like a built-in story ender, at least eventually.
They could give another set after a big season finale but it would only really work once.
Not really though; remember, Doctor Who determined that Time Lord's can regenerate twelve times and that's it, only to
[A] do something where the Time Lords somehow give the Doctor another set of twelve; then later
[B] reveal the Doctor already has infinite regenerations.

I mean, the real world reason it happened is because they'd otherwise have to end the highly profitable series, but, yeah. It's been a while since it all happened but I believe people generally didn't like the "here's 12 more lives" thing and REALLY were unhappy with "there's actually no limit in place" because that kind of...if the character can just keep coming back forever there's not going to be any drama in the character being in a near death situation because you know it will always survive. Even with 12 more you're at least going to know there will eventually be a final.
This is incredible! The vibes are immaculate and I like that it’s a “small time” hero instead of the whole-city/world/universe/multiverse level issues we get from modern comics.

This was so genuinely charming, it felt like a high budget '60s spiderman and managed to be both nostalgic and capturing, considering the story really isn't half bad. Hope to see more in this style and of Superzeroes in general! I'm pretty sure we're already planting the seeds for a shared universe

Loved it, the noir vibe, the old Hanna-Barbera superhero style... it all came together and made something that felt like a golden age comic come to life.
I like how nostalgic this makes me feel. The art style, the animation style, the dialogue's writing, the detailed painted closeups. It feels like I've travelled back in time to watch an animated series in a comforting way.

This was awesome! It looks straight out of a comic from the Golden Age. It was surprisingly more intense than I thought it would be. The voice acting was great. Gianni absolutely killed it as the Sensational Cat Man! He nailed the gruff noir detective (not surprised since he voice another famous detective). Considering the disillusionment from the CGI spectacle of the MCU and DCEU, this was a breath of fresh air and a nice return to form of the superhero medium. Overall, I was very pleased with this. Can't wait to see this universe blossom! ❤
absolutely love this. animation is amazing, strikes a perfect balance between paying homage to the classic cartoons while making the most of modern techniques. script embraces the campiness while also presenting a genuinely engaging story. this format works so well for the superzeroes universe you’re building out. would love to see more content in this style. truly amazing

Have you considered making audio adventures as a podcast? I think the old-timey radio serial format could work quite well for these, or even something like the BBC's Batman audio adaptation "The Lazarus Syndrome" (which is well worth a listen BTW)

I'm a huge fan of classic superhero cartoons and media, having grown up with my eccentric dad's hand-me-down collection of 1960s-80s Spider-Man comics, reruns of the 1966 Batman TV show, and here most importantly, the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon and original 1969 Scooby-Doo show, and I just want to say to you and your animators, Austin, that this is a beyond incredible episode and homage you've made here.
Your attention to detail and absolute dedication to the tropes and kitschy fun of that media is astonishing, recreating commonly reused movement animations such as at 8:48 (1967 Spider-Man used this walking animation a-plenty) and featuring subtle little things like suddenly more detailed still frames of comic art dropped into the show (The Marvel Super-Heroes show from 1966 loved to do this with Jack Kirby's work) like at 10:02.
I've been following the Superzeroes since your first video on Atlas, and as a comic artist and writer of my own very campy Adam West-esque superhero comics, I've been looking forward to this cartoon for quite some time. Keep up the amazing work!
I loved getting to parse out Austin's cameo at around 11:33. Nice to hear him get back into voice acting since Shenmue!
I love that this is a sincere Golden Age superhero story. No satire, no poking fun at the characters or concept, no 4th wall breaks or anything like that. Just a straight forward, old fashioned superhero story.

The music that starts at about 3:00 and reused starting at 14:17 sounds so much like one of the recurring "mystery/romance" themes from the original series of Star Trek that I was tempted to go find it and compare them. A more subtle reference to '60s TV than others made in this video, and I appreciated it.

I really want at least 10 more episodes. This is so cool. The animation, the style, the stakes are grounded which is far better that I expected. I love The Spectacular Cat-Man so far, keep making more episodes.
I love the old-school pulpy feel of this. A bit of noir, a bit of two-fisted adventure.
The thing I like most about the animation is its temperance. The talking scenes are simple, but the expression changes are a nice touch. The actually well animated scenes are reserved for the fight scenes, which is important. I'm excited for these projects, and I'm glad that the budget is being managed. Disney could learn a thing or two.

I absolutely love the fact that you were able to incorporate the Max Fleischer Superman cartoon and the 1967 Spiderman cartoon produced by Raymond Patterson and the legendary Ralph Bakshi (The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse anyone). With all that being said, I seriously hope you make more of these animated Catman episodes because he was a pretty interesting and cool Golden Age character! I also love the fact that the setting has that 1960s motif along with Catman’s redesigned costume! I’m definitely a fan and I look forward to seeing more of Catman! There are also two fairly visible swipes from the intro for the Filmation Tarzan cartoon, and the tigress is a swipe of the father tiger in the "Look Out for Mr. Stork" sequence in Dumbo.

Just realized that the nine lives thing could make for some really great character development. As in, in the beginning he's really reckless and just throws himself into fights and other dangerous situations, but then as he reaches his fourth or fifth "resurrection" he realizes he needs to slow down a bit and become more cautious and cunning and, well, cat-like in how he approaches problems.
Then again, you've probably made all the episodes by now, so maybe doing suggestions is a bit pointless at this point, but just thinking out loud xD
I wish I could express how exited I have been to see this unfold ever since your first video. An absolute amazing addition! I have atlas pre ordered and plan on giving spider queen a listen when it comes to audible. Many of these comments, while positive, are full of ideas of how you should continue moving forward, but in my mind, you haven’t made a misstep yet, so just keep doing what you think is best. Can’t wait to see where this goes!

Thank you for making this and congratulations on seeing to the end such a demanding project! There's something really heartwarming about someone pouring so much effort into a passion project just so we can have a few hours or even minutes of entertainment.
You've been a really inspirational channel for me not just because of your creative efforts but for how you encouraging people to set out and do the same. It's been keeping me going as I write my first novel, Recombinant: Bridgehead. It's 100% a non-profit passion project because it's the sequel to James Cameron's Avatar. The lack of heart, magic, charm and story in the recent Avatar 2 movie disgusted me so much that my sister and I, decided to set out and and write the actual sequel---all three books worth. It's hard, it's daunting and I often want to cry because of what a monumental labour it is; today I felt so much like the pathetic little guy, way in over her head, and then I see your pilot of Cat-man and it puts such a smile on my face to see small content creators just shrugging at their limitations and doing it anyway. It was even you who introduced me to Vibbart's Exigency series, one of the best movie I've seen in years and it was made by one dude working for over a decade---and he's still going at it with the sequels! Thanks Mr. McConnell for your videos, for promoting creators and inspiring us all to just do it. Oh and I read your Spider Queen preview and loved it! I want to put the book on my kobo someday. Best of luck fellow writer and thank you.

Will Catman get other cat powers? EXAMPLE: Claws, fangs, even more enhanced reflexes (The narrator does syaa cat like reflexes but it isn't really shown to much), and more. I know that in certain parts of the animation there is some scratching/claw effects, but does this mean he has claws (maybe he just learned to fight like a cat and this effect reflects that), and/or more prominent claws. What about his agility/hearing/cat senses/reaction speed/speed being more prominently shown? I.E. parkour, jumping high. (Also does he have fangs/Canine teeth becuase some scenes look like he does)
Like maybe after one cat life he gains another cat-like ability. In life one he just has nine lives plus some basic cat-like combat. Life 2 maybe he has more prominent cat-like reflexes and/or more prominently shown claws (Kind of like Wolverine. Also these could be similar to a tiger's claws as he was raised and grew connected to a tiger).
Maybe something like this would make him possibly more unique and stronger the more he dies. So it's a win lose situation. On one hand you get extra powers and become even stronger but you also become one life closer to death. For example this is a weird plot point, but maybe he doesn't like getting more of these powers as it either reminds him of his tiger mother of he feels less human because of this (Or obviously and maybe preferably he'd fine with the extra powers). I know I've been ranting for a while but this can also explain him dying in a fight, but then being able to come back in his next life and win.

I like this a lot, I fear it won't get the support it needs to be great, but I love the Fleicher Superman style backdrops and the overall aesthetic, having a columbo thing is the right move. Someone should do this with The Phantom!

Great work. I was immersed from begin to end. The style is so classic! Reminds me of 60s and 70s cartoon adaptations of comic books at the time with very limited movement and animation. Lips moved bit weird in this one but i take it over lips barely moving at all in those old cartoons. Some corners were cut but i hope most understand the budget limits and scale of this cinemaverse project. Love ur work and hope this one succeeds!

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR OVER A YEAR NOW AND IT'S FINALLY CAME TO FRUITION! I hate that he died in his first episode BUT THAT WAS GOOD and I'm happy he came back to life!!! I'm sure the longer he lives the better hell get at heroism and the longer he will live before another death, so that's good. But as you've stated in the comics he died a lot at first so I guess he'll be dieing on your show left and right at first. But I can't wait to watch this and all the other animations you come out with in the future.

Absolutely incredible, I loved the sort of 60s Hana Barbara art style, and I loved the twist at the end. I cant wait to see more!

This was really cool. I love the well written dialog and how Catman is hyped up in the begging as an incredible sluther because someone the lady knows that's worked with him talks him up even though he's never in the newspapers.
The ending I didn't like. It makes it seem like everything Catman just did and lost a life for was completely pointless when his client immediately dies and loses the diamond again anyway.
Hot tip: This looks better in 480p. Shots with granular shading are still wonky, though
