KAIRĀKAU is the new series brought to life by Māoridom’s newest and dynamic screen talent.
A 9 x half hour historic ‘Mau Rākau’ series for Māori Television, told with the visual flair of ‘300’ and presented with the hands on spirit of ‘Man vs Wild’, delivered in %100 Te Reo Māori.
Ancient Heroes of yesteryear, re-discovered, re-examined and re-imagined. This series is a creative depiction of the lives of tupuna who lived on the land we call Aotearoa.
Elements of historic events and oral traditions have been drawn upon and re-sequenced to create each episode. The aim of this series is to keep the stories and traditions of our past, alive. In series one of Kairākau we are bringing to life some of the infamous stories of Te Arawa toa (warriors) and rangatira (chiefs).
Entirely in te reo Māori, Kairākau is a pioneering television drama series for NZ television.
Stories that have been confined to the pages of history for too long, now have an opportunity to come to life.

Well, that looks pretty awesome. I'm glad to be seeing more Maori related shows, particularly pre-colonial, and I am especially glad that it isn't another show about Aucklanders with jobs, houses, and romance, like every other new show that gets greenlit in our country.
Sorry for the rant, but this is just a breath of fresh air to see for New Zealand television and hopefully will open more ideas to programming.
