Last Light Review - 1 Hour TI4!?

- A true 4x experience in only 60 minutes!? Grey Fox games' Gamefound funded tabletop game has a lot of area control and hand management ideas to harvest the most victory points from the universe. Designer Roy Cannaday has clearly played a lot of Twilight Imperium and Eclipse 2nd edition in all the mechanics crammed into this simultaneous sci-fi game. But does the rush of everything come at a cost, or is the rushing even a good idea? Is it even a true 4x like Sid Meier's Civilization 2010, or is it more like Scythe in not having parts of the 4xness? Is there enough time to do the Ameritrash elements, or will it feel more like a Euro, like Civ a New Dawn?

#boardgames #tabletop #review - Hry
I like this review from a hardcore TI4 player. You can totally tell the difference in how you broke down the balance of techs while nobody else even mentioned it.
You should really do a review for eclipse second dawn. I feel like that scratches the TI4 itch without taking 7 hours ++
Eclipse is a very different game. The main appeal and focus of TI are diplomacy, variable objectives and a lot of highly asymmetric factions, while Eclipse focuses on economy, expansion and fleet customization without any diplomacy, same objectives every game and just 7 factions that are not that wildly different (different starting conditions, ship blueprints and one improved action - that's all). Those two games scratch different itches.
@@Warchoon I agree with your analysis of the games but for my game group Eclipse scratches the 4x itch wrapped in that TI4 theme and is easier to get to the table. That's why its played more in my group. I'm not going to debate which one is better as that is really left to personal preference and play style. Spoiler alert... I own both and prefer both depending on the situation.
I do however stand by my original statement that Eclipse, for my group, scratches that itch without investing all day. A 4 player games only last 2.5-3 hours once everyone knows the rules. For myself that is a much more achievable to get friends together for 3-4 hours vs 7+ hours.
Anyway it was just a thought. I noticed that Eclipse wasn't covered on the review videos and it is fair to compare the two games. While they are fundamentally different in their play styles they do share similarities and it might warrant a review. Its been my personal experience that while people have a favorite most people that enjoy TI4 or Eclipse aren't opposed to playing one or the other and the only constraint in the decision making process is the time investment required for the respective games.
He did, and he said he never wants to play it again, in his games I never want to play again list!
Eclipse is a 4x game so of course it scratches the 4x itch, but other than the themes it has very few similarities to TI4. It's also just way shorter with less downtime so generally gets to the table more.
Appreciate the honesty of the review and the suggestions for fixes. Very thoughtful! Keep up the good work, Shelfside!
Great review, some helpful observations made! You’re very thorough with the various pros and cons!
Such a great review and dive into the details to help with learning. It actually sounds like a good fit for my group so I am excited to get it to the table. Thanks!
Two shelfside videos within 12 hours! Incredible. I still have yet to play TI4, but my gf and her family have it and want to play it too. One day we will get to it. I do love the Civ board game too though. That’ll have to do for now.
Haha, more coming tomorrow! -Ashton
Got to play this at BGG Con last week. The game was everywhere! It was announced it was officially the most played game of the Con it turns out. My favorite game of all time is Eclipse, so I was very excited to try out this 4X game that claimed it played in an hour. Plus, I'm a fan of Roy on the Dice Tower. Unfortunately, I noticed many of the issues you called out in my one play of it as well. We had one player create a crazy tech combo and they ran away to the 20 points so quickly before the rest of us really felt like we accomplished anything at all. I came in second with only 10 points. I also just don't think I'm a big fan of simultaneous actions, because while it does make the game fast, it just takes me out of the immersion of what's happening in the game as everything is just happening so quickly and causes it to lose a lot of the epic feel that I love so much in these style of games. However, with all of that said, I DO think what Roy was able to accomplish is still pretty incredible, and a second edition could help iron out some of the wrinkles. I could also always easily house rule that players just take their action in card initiative order to slow things down a bit so that I can get a better feel of what's actually taking place and be more invested. Great review! Love watching your content.
Great review! This game is a pass for me based on the imbalances and the luck factor. Though I love Roy's idea to create such an ambitious game! He definitely has my attention for any future projects.
I know it is a cheesy saying, but don’t knock it until you try it. Throw in a house rule for faction selection, but otherwise the game plays great.
I had the EXACT same issue with the bare bones rulebook and edge cases (and some that were common case) and some inconsistent wording between the rulebook and the reference sheet which implied you do certain actions differently (namely 'gaining' a ship vs 'building' a ship - the former sounds free, while the latter sounds like you still need to pay for it and the only advantage was to build a ship out of turn)
Would be interesting to see a follow up house rules video. Hopefully they take your suggestions and make a second edition. Thanks for the video!
And btw having a recommended score and personal score is high level usefulness. It tries to to give you some objectivity vs a subjective score I think.
Bounced right off of it. Got it, played it and sold it immediately. Didn’t feel any real tension and it felt like “yep, that means I won”
I agree Last light just doesn't feel right for the genre, i'd rather play something else. Burning Suns is a nice shorter 4x game.
Have it and have really enjoyed it. Played 5 times at different player counts. I definitely see what you are saying with the tech balance on the move action. It’s over powered. Otherwise, been so much fun.
Cheers! It is fun for me would play again :) -Ashton
Thanks for the review on this. I was super interested in this game when it was on crowdfunding, but the price tag kept me from backing it. More recently, though, I did pre-order it for much less from an online shop. This review has me feeling somewhat wary now, but it still seems more or less a game that I will really enjoy. I appreciate all the thoughts on house rules too. I'm going to save this video to reference those later if needed.
Surprised you didn't mention that the large cards were 82mm in width making locating sleeves well complicated if not impossible until the OEMs offer them to meet Last Lighter's needs.
Despite mixed reviews, I was initially hesitant. However, after an epic session of Last Light, I had a fantastic time! The components are solid, especially the ship minis. Adding more races for players to choose from is an easy change. I'll also consider potential tech adjustments, which shouldn't be too difficult. As a big fan of intense, head-to-head battling games like Blood Rage, TI4, and Eclipse, this game is right up my alley :)
If I had the luxury of a day to myself, single and without kids, TI4 would be my go-to. But in my current reality, Last Light slots perfectly into my gaming schedule :)
Thanks for the detailed review Ashton. I really love ti4 and play it on a semi monthly basis. I saw this game several times on Kickstarter and was tempted for the 4x in an hour experience. However the more I looked at it the more I felt it wouldn't meet my expectations. There are areas I was weary of which were echoed in your criticisms. So I'm glad I didn't go ahead with this game. I did however back fractal beyond the void which feel is like the birthchild of ti4 , eclipse, root and Kemet and plays in 2-3hrs. You should definitely check it out as a fellow ti4 enthusiast. Alan
This is the most honest review I have seen regarding this game. No one has talked about the production issues, which astounds me. You mentioned most, if not all, my qualms with the game. (Assuming you did not get the expansion or upgraded resin planets…which all had their own major issues. I am not as big of a 4x connoisseur as you all, so the lack of more major 4xishness does not bother me all that much. But when you told me that what I spent for this would have landed me TI4…that realization made my souls hurt. Grey Fox games really had a huge let down here on this one. Game mechanisms not included.
Great review!
This breakdown is INCREDIBLE. Wow. Earned a subscribe.
Awesome! More stuff to come, thanks! -Ashton
Super interesting game. I do see how different the recommender score vs the personal score were so different. For someone like me who is neutral, playing this as one of my first 4x's may not be the best experience what with the issues you brought up makes it a valid 5 from a balance perspective. However, seeing the potential this has for becoming a great game in a second edition is reflected in the 7/10. probably wont be purchasing this myself seeing the price tag but will stick for the second editiond. Great review once again u guys :D
Wow!! Fantastic overview!
Great review as always!
"Shorter TI" has been done many times (RftG, Eclipse, etc). Rotating board is neat here. I would love to see a new version of HF4A borrow the idea. The cons section makes me think it wasn't tested well.
Fantastic review and I find it to be exceptionally accurate. Ashton I'd love to hear what your house rules are for Last Light.
I glued the rod to the base after seeing your video and sleeved the cards.
Your review most mirrored my experience as compared to the other reviewers, who I wonder might be overly affected by their revlationship with Roy. You earned respect with this one.
Excellent review. Bravo.
This is a fantastic review! You really covered everything well. Without playing it, you made me feel as though I understood it well. I have a lot of respect for giving a critical review of a game that a buddy made and shared with you. I know that can be hard to do. Overall, this game looks pretty darn good, especially for a new designer. Watching your video is my first time hearing about the game at all, so I missed the kickstarter. I'll probably not pick it up. The physical product quality and game balance seem pretty rushed, still impressive for a first time board game dev, but not something I'm excited to add to my shelf. I will say this though, if a 2nd edition of Last Light ever comes out, with higher quality components and more time to iterate and balance based off of feedback, I will buy that thing so freaking fast! I hope Roy Cannaday enjoys the success of this, learns a lot, and comes out with an even better version!
People always say "rushed" when something doesn't work. Like they didn't spend enough time. The game was in development since at least 2017.
@@dannyf1168 Well its pretty obvious this one needed more balance testing, or otherwise the designer and developers couldnt figure out a way to fix the problems and didnt want to spend the time going back to the basics. I ve played the game 6 times now, and 2 out of those 6 were lopsided games with the uneven distribution of movement tech ending the game really quickly, and not allowing much counterplay. I dont imagine the intention of this game is that 1/3 of the games are a rather non-competitive lopsided mess, so there wasnt enough time in balancing.
That was a great Roy impression.
Best, most honest reviews online. As a game designer myself, I LOVE to see your opinions on how to make a game better. Question: do you take a look at pre-published games to give your feedback on them so your opinions can be considered before the game launches?
Yep, it’s basically under consulting on our website! Apologies for not responding earlier didn’t see this one!
@@ashtonwu7760 thank you! No worries
I really hope to see a new version of this. It sounds interesting, but the weaknessses you pointed out are important to me. Also, i miss trading!
I saw a mad rush at the exhibition booths to get this game at BGG Con, glad I didnt pick up a copy myself
Really enjoy your videos!
My ‘go to’ non TI4 / Eclipse space game is Empires of the Void II. This game takes about 2.5 hrs and is a great time! Easy to play, gorgeous art, great components.
Have you ever played this? What do you think of the game?
EOTV II feels a lot like Space-Scythe, not a true 4X in any means but it is very fun. It's a shame no one has really cracked the code on a quicker 4X game but players gotta take turns, and those turns need to be impactful and thoughtful, and honestly all of that is gonna take time.
Scythe and EOTV II are the closest I've seen to getting the *vibes* of 4X games distilled into something else entirely, though. You're doing area control, you're researching things, you're discovering things on the tiles that are variable from game-to-game, you're managing resources from those tiles, you're getting into combat, etc.
Played this over the weekend and everything in this review is accurate. I'd also like to point out the board with it's rotation creates some weird gaps and people were always asking can I move through that? This is a game where I would play it but do not take it serious at all...fun to run around and blast people
Im subbed. Great review!
Nice review - I learned a lot about the game so thank you. I don’t think you misunderstood the 4X definition you quoted. When it defines eXterminte it means you can wipe a race off the board, but it didn’t say that player can’t do anything (e.g., research in Last Light). I’ve never played TE4, but it seems you can wipe a race off the map, but the player can still play and even get points later if things change. I do play Eclipse and I know you can do research to get points even if your race is wiped off the board and I consider it a 4X game based on your quoted definition.
Yep, I do think Eclipse is a 4x! Something about "4x" is a vibe nowadays haha. Cheers! -Ashton
Kudos for keeping it real with an honest review.
This review kind of hit exactly what I had expected with this game. I’m glad you said the gum-ball thing because every time the hype almost got me to back this I would look at those planets and lose interest. I think this was a design that went too much for the gimmick of 4x in one hour so maybe compromised some of the balance and epic decisions that 4x cause you to make. I find when I play 4x games they are some of the few games where I’m actually enthralled by other peoples turns so simultaneous doesn’t necessarily speak to me for the genre. I’ll be interested to see where this game fall overall. I feel like casual gamers don’t necessarily care to play a 4x game and 4x gamers are happy to play a long epic game like once or twice a year
This is an amazing review.
Holy shit you do a real good Roy impression 🔥💚
I'll wait for the second edition.
I'm interested in whether the second printing fix any of your issues
Have you tried warpgate with the beyond expansion?
thank you so much. I was suspicious of the glowing review from dice tower. the game looks like a prototype, no way it played as well as DT claimed. I'm finding only 1 or 2 people on DT give through reviews. keep up the great work!
Love your content I was wondering If one day you will do a kingdom death monster review ?
Stylewise the cards and factions looks fine to me. The board and all plastic components on the other hand feels so 80s/90s.
10/10 intro
Tempted to suggest each player plays controls an alliance of species, where you have several cards at the start. Maybe there are some broken combinations, maybe earn them at certain point values. I dunno. Also auctioning for tech, maybe? I like the ambition of this game, I wonder how it compares to Eclipse. Is the movement bonus tech permanent for all ships? Could they say that it's just for the next movement the player does, or only for one fleet to move immediately? Or is that comparatively too weak?
One thing that wouldn't affect much except saving cards would be to have a paper cup for each player and a normal six-sided die, and everyone puts the number of their card on the die face up under the cup to reveal, and just use the actual cards to track what actions you've played already. I'm in a modding mood I guess
So, this was an "aspirational pledge" for me.
The original Gamefound campaign promised a lot, especially from a first-time designer. The initial exposure on BGG and seeing how various elements were arranged offered some substance to the rather lofty goal of a "4x game in an hour", so I had some conflicted skepticism. I always thought the designer's intent as a strange and somewhat contradictory approach to temper one's expectations- if such a 4x game could be realized, I'd rather have a good experience last a little longer (which is why there's room in my collection for both Eclipse SD & TI4 + PoK). Roy's position as a regular contributor to the Dice Tower mostly bypassed this skepticism, as I saw this project as a natural extension of my yearly contribution to the Dice Tower's annual funding campaign (although the emphasis of support was only applicable a specific individual's efforts rather the DT crew as a whole).
There's a lot to like about this game, and it is a significant accomplishment for Roy, so I'm glad that I played a small role in bringing it to fruition. Your critique was reasonable and specific, and for all the reasons you mentioned, it is likely that LL will be passed over for better games in the sub-genre until Roy revises these issues.
One note of specific importance to me as a player who needs to navigate set-up/tear-downs: Last Light offers a pretty good organizer to keep the deluxe components nested securely, which is something that Twilight Imperium has not yet accomplished in over 25 years since 1st edition was published. 🤔
That Roy impression was uncanny. Edit: Hmm, given the thoughts expressed here, I wonder if I should sell my BNIS copy that I recently received.
I cant wait to hear your review on Fractal!
hmm, not sure if we're gonna cover that anytime soon :) -ashton
When this came onto crowd funding, I was really interested in it. I immediately tried it with my friends over table top simulator to check how it played and I was... sort of underwhelmed. Like it wasn't bad, but it didn't blow me away. I couldn't really put my finger on it. The board rotation seemed like a neat idea, but really just became more of a frustration.
When I saw the physical copy showing the art and planets, it pretty much sealed the deal that it wasn't for me. When you said it felt like a highschool science project, that was immediately how I felt. I get that the marble thing is new, and different and has a "gimmick" factor to it, but it just sort of was meh to me. I would have much preferred premade miniature planets of different sizes etc. Those don't look like planets to me, just gumballs or something.
I'd play this game again if asked, it was fine. But it didn't really jump out at me.
How do I get hold of your house rules? They seem really important and well thought out.
Erm, I don't really have anything written out. I think the tech change is the best one I'd start with, then allowing players to choose from more factions during setup! You can try fiddling around with the total VP needed to win too -Ashton
I would probably house rule this: n minus 1 refresh is when everyone gets their refresh back.
In similar games, this makes it way more tense. Because otherwise that person that gets ignored will always have a turn advantage. And in a take-that type war game (this is more war game than 4x) the person you ignore will probably win.
If you can take away a turn from someone in a better position by preemptively playing a card, the game will tend to be better balanced.
Best intro, hands down
Thanks for this review... i'll wait for a second edition that fix some of the cons... or just wait.
Want to know your guys' thoughts on some of Level99Games' games such as, exceed, sakura arms, bullet. Also, gotta do a review for eclipse.
You are correct about it all. Great game, some needless design and rulebook issues. Hoping for a second edition that fixes these problems. Great debut for Roy though, I shall watch his career with great interest.
Also correct about the balance issues. Hope that also gets addressed.
I asked about balance in the comments on 2nd ed kickstarter.. here is the reply.
Welcome to the campaign and thanks for your interest in the game!
Last light can be a chaotic game. Sometimes that means big come-from-behind moments. Sometimes it means a leader that can't be stopped. The game is not perfectly balanced and players are expected to work together to try and reel in a player who is exploiting a powerful combination of technologies or a menacing alien faction power. But after hundreds of playtests we like those things about it!
I tell you all this for context because even though we HAVE made some adjustments based on feedback from the community, the chaos, and associated drama is still very much a part of this game!
For this second printing, 2 minor adjustments have been made to movement technologies.
1. The Pioneering card now allows a player to move only a single ship and not all ships of 1 type. (we agree after deeper analysis that the original tech gave outsized value for its cost)
2. The Supersonic technology is slightly more expensive (meaning it tends to show up a round later in the game giving players without this speed tech a change to develop other avenues to compete)
These two minor changes alter the pace of the race very slightly but players will still need to keep an eye on their opponents and combine forces to slow down a player who finds good exploration tokens, develops strong tech, or has a particularly nasty alien faction ability.
Thanks for being a part of the campaign and good luck in your pursuit of the Last Light!
Hello Shelfside; I am wondering what your thoughts on "Space Empires 4x" are! Would you consider reviewing this GMT game?
I strongly feel this is a very under promoted and underated game.
Heard about it a lot! Will have to play one day :) -Ashton
+1 for Space Empires 4X... criminally underrated. I think some people discount games out-of-hand if they see only chits on a grid. It's not a very "sexy-looking" game, but the gameplay makes up for everything else.
It's too fiddly and it takes too many turns until you can get into contact with enemy ships.
The game looks like poop, I wish it looked better personally. I know a lot of people talk about how "presentation doesn't matter, it could be nondescript blocks for all I care" in board games but fact of the matter is that just isn't true. Space Empires 4x limits its exposure because it looks like shit.
We tried it at Gen Con as there was a lot of demand in the morning for it. After the demo it was a clear no go. 4x cannot be done in an hour without stripping it to bare minimum, which makes it like a seltzer. Yes, you get alcool but without any happiness
Have a look at "A handful of Stars" or "Warpgate" when you dig the idea of a shorter TI4
So cool
I think this highlights why, sure, 4x games don't *need* to be long, but I *want* my 4x games to be long. Part of what makes them appealing is that epic arc. And what makes them balanced-ish is that time over which luck can swing, you can make deals, and react. Normally I'm opposed to much luck in games, but I still love TI with it's massive amount of luck as there's enough to balance it or at least cause a lucky flip win to be exciting instead of annoying. At a price point about equal to TI Last Light just doesn't seem worth it.
TI4?! In 1 HOUR?!@
It's unfortunate to hear about the balance and rules description issues. I think I'll wait on the second edition as well.
Try "The Warp" it is considered as the TI4 lite
Empires of the Void II blasts this out of the water for the same vibe.
I'll put it on the list! -Ashton
Waiting for Fractal review 😍
I like your opening
Cheers :) -Ashton
Great review. Mirrored our games. I liked the game but getting speed early was just game breaking.
I wonder how the game would play if the default move for all ships was 2. I would still remove the leadership or move tech out of the game.
Retail when!!
MXPX shirt!!
these components reaaaallly looks like something they did fast to give out to playtesters... Looks like lightyears from the finish product. But these are suppose to be the deluxe version? xD WHAAAT xDDDDDDDDDDDD
Another 4x game to try out is "Exodus: Proxima Centauri"... not quite as long as "TI4" but more polished than "Last Light" seems to be.
Voidfall review pls
There is a CZcams channel, Shelfclutter, with a too similar name & logo to yours…
I know right! Pretty crazy haha -Ashton
Am I the only one super turned off by that board and the marble looking planets? It still looks like a home made prototype. Kinda glad it doesn't seem like a game I want to own or play :P
Pleeeeease review the new Nemesis: Retaliation.
Being sick of only the idea of having a game lasting for 7-8 hours like TI4, that's why I prefer Eclipse that lasts half that time max, I'm waiting for my backed copy of Last Light to arrive. I surely agree with Ashton on the scoring 7 or even 8 out of 10 is a good score all considered. When I was in my 20s with a similar aged group of friends I would have loved TI4 but maybe I would have preferred playing a wargame like WH40k all day long. In my 40s I don't have all that time nor the patience to stay 8 hours for a board game (unless it's Spirit Island, the only exception 😀!) and if I had 8 hours I would rather play more than one game or different games. And what if you want to introduce someone to a space themed or 4Xish game? Would you prefer to break their back with a TI4 and never see them again playing it or trying something like this one and wasting 1-2 hours of their time at maximum? Easy pick for me, but that is a question of tastes I guess. I will surely play this game a lot of times with my group of very experienced friends (and not so young anymore unfortunately) and then decide to leave this game in my collection or move on.
Thank you Ashton, your reviews are always interesting. Keep up the great work.
looks like a cool game, not for me though :).
Best game that does the rotating gimmick is TSR's Buck Rogers battle for the 25th century, TSR's version of Risk.
The center of the board has the solar system, and the planets rotate around the sun, each space for Earth is one turn, also how the other pieces rotate dictate where you can attack next.
I found it pretty average, too. Bland despite the multiple routes to victory and emergent assymetey via technologies. Because it lacks in meaningful decisions and early consequence.
I think the simultaneous play actually detracts too much from the tension and interaction. It's not too chaotic or impossible to track what other people are doing. But I just felt I didn't care all that much. And then, as you criritsed. Scenarios arise where it becomes impossible to stop someone rushing the centre of the board, for instance. It makes for a slightly disappointing arc.
We've got last light to the table twice now. Both were at 3 players.
The first game was really fun and close, the second game however, one player ran away and won and it wasn't that fun. That might have been the fault of myself and the other player not reacting to the winning player's strategy though. I need a few more plays to really determine how I feel about the game.
I agree with a lot of your sentiment about the components, they are pretty bad after playing twice. The 3D planets make seeing what's underneath them fairly difficult. Same thing with the resources, seeing the difference between the rare and the uncommon is a little too close. I don't like the player boards and The miniatures are pretty bad quality for today's standards.
Thank you for the honest review! Interesting that the DT didn't mention the low production issues like card quality...but for other games with low quality components they don't forget to point it out. :)
My favorite 4x type game is Dead Reckoning
I was keen on this game initially but then I discovered it was being published by Grey Fox and I noped out.
I had such a terrible experience with their Tsukiyumi project that I decided to never, ever give them money ever again.
I'll wait for a good company to do an actual deluxe version.
That intro 😂😂😂😂
You completely skipped over the faction that immediately gets +1 movement!
Yep, that one is really good too! -Ashton
I appreciate your score. Don't listen to the IGN watchers who think the scale goes from 6-10
The french name of the game TTMC means "tu te mets combien" wich basicly means how Do you evaluate your knowledge from 1-10.
The translation isnt Great but i get they wanted to keep the game identity. For once, the english name is worse 😅
I’m just going to throw this out there - I’m tired of people comparing everything to TI4! TI4 is a great game, but I personally don’t prefer it to other games and would never buy it, all for the simple fact that it takes WAY too long to play!!! I get it. It needs to take that long in order to incorporate all of the awesomeness that is in it. But that doesn’t mean that a game can’t be a great 4X game just because it doesn’t size up to TI4. Let TI4 be an exception to the rule outside of the general 4X category and allow all other 4X games be considered according to the limits of a “reasonable” amount of gameplay (2-3 hours max).
I think Last Light is a great 4X game. I do agree that the factions are imbalanced and that they should be more focused on unique asymmetry as opposed to a glorified tech card that you start out with. I do think that they should be more focused on changing the general rules up for that specific faction. Not because they should be more like TI4 but because that makes more sense for the sake of asymmetry.
Are the techs imbalanced? Sure. But movement is not the only way to rake in points. Yes it is strong when your ships are in the center and the board rotates, but you can also get points from going tech heavy, going combat heavy, going resource heavy trading up to light, etc. This game is all about shifting your strategy on a dime. In opposition to what he claimed, I do believe that the imbalances can smooth themselves out IF you are adaptable. If they don’t, then I say that’s on the player(s) for not being adaptable.
This game is a great 4X game. No, it is not TI4, and I’m glad! I don’t WANT it to be! So again, please stop comparing this and other games to TI4!
We dislike and sold back TI4 because damn too long & boring but we looove Eclipse and we are gonna jump on Last Light as a "Pocket Eclipse"!
Hearing about gamefound exclusives in a review that only comes out way after the gamefound drive ends is a pretty good way to get me to give the game a pass regardless of its comparative virtues.
Second printing on Gamefound launches in January.
0 hour TI4 please
Just played and I won! -ashton
I played it once or twice. I'd rather play scythe.
I had a bad feeling about this one the whole campaign. The art really bothered me plus all the bad reviews on previous productions. I'm so glad I canceled at the last minute.
Your realize that these reviews for Last Light, like the actual production copies have been good? Bazaars or Ubar was also from GFG and fulfilled a few months ago and the game was solid. I know there were issues with Full Moon Down and GFG is not my favorite, but they did not drop the ball with their last 2 campaigns at the least. I was genuinely concerned when I heard they were making Roy's game, but thus far have been happy with the game I received.

Having to house rule so many items tells me the game wasn't vetted well at all. If you need 6 exceptions to the rules to make it playable, that's not a game.
Wasn't vetted? You realize that not only did Last Light undergo years of development, time i which the game was reviewed by numerous other designers, but then they spent the entire COVID era and beyond demoing and playtesting the game time and time again. If its not for you, that's great as no game is for everyone, but don't fool yourself, this game was vetted all over the place and play tested again and again for years at conventions and online.
@@npckse8508 Come on man. Years??? Nah I can't see it. From the review I'd guess it was slapped together in about 6 weeks.
I mean believe what you want. It's 2023 so apparently what actually occurs is less important than what you have decided has occurred
If you wanna die on this hill defending this game that's fine. I had thought about getting it but now... ain't no way. Plenty of fish in the sea. @@npckse8508
Yup, waiting for a rebalanced second edition (with less fugly components pretty please). Glad to see the impression I got after looking at the campaign for ten minutes or so was borne out ultimately. The concept has potential but the delivery is undercooked and overpriced.
Yeah I mean the highly successful campaign, the high ratings here and elsewhere, man you dodged a bullet. Wait, you do realize that this has been a well-enjoyed and well-received game right? I mean even this review is overall positive as have been the reviews elsewhere. I appreciate that the game is not for you, but your comment sort of sounds like you have been looking around for someone to validate your opinion of something you yourself have never played. Odd.
Thanks for being more genuine about your review than Tom from Dice Tower.
Lol spoken like someone who literally apparently didn't watch Tom's review or the video he released in which he talked about his thoughts on Roy having a game and ultimately reviewing it.
