One of the most critical elements of a Michael Flatley show is the ending. Specifically, he designs his shows with an upbeat ending in mind; as he described it once to Lord Melvyn Bragg on The South Bank Show, it should feel like watching your team score a really amazing goal at the World Cup.
This is important because dance dramas don't have to be structured in such a way. But, then, how many dance dramas play to stadiums with over 100,000 people?
Michael Flatley stage shows are a curious product: all they sell is joy. You know that going in. You're in on it from the beginning. Yes, the dancers and musicians are top-notch. Yes, the technical elements are pristine. Yes, there will be a rollercoaster of emotions brought to life in careful, meticulous orchestration of man and machine. But what makes it work, at its core, is the hard-earned victory: going out there and doing something so brutally difficult, so insanely challenging, and pulling it off with dash right before your eyes, all the while unabashedly giving you permission to feel your way through the experience.
You go to one of Michael's stage shows for an earthshattering catharsis of positive high-energy. As a result, his shows have license to do something almost no show in the world can credibly get away with except for the largest rock acts on the planet: go as big and loud and crazy as you want.
Simply put: Lord of the Dance has license to go boom.
We need this in our lives. As children, full of wonder, everything is new and exciting, an adventure to unfold; as adults, we all too often lock that inner child away, and the world seems to lose more and more of its color every year. This is especially true now, as a pandemic grips the world.
Sometimes you just want something uplifting.

Saw him in St. Louis, MO. One of the best performances I've ever seen in real life. My lil sis & I wanted to take clogging lessons. We were so touched by their artistry, expertise and passion! Michael Flatley and Michael Jackson.....there will never be those exact superb and sublime talents on Earth ever again.💙💙
My family originate from Cork. I love Irish dancing, and find it so emotional to watch. It makes me want to cry at the sheer skill involved. My daughter and I saw Riverdance and we were both wrecks, as she feels the same as me. Fabulous, just absolutely bloody fabulous. As for Michael.....what can you say?
