- Taking the show on the road today by digging into a wood pile down on the ol' family farm and pulling out a juniper wood fencepost that's who knows how old!
Hang out while I turn that piece of old fencepost into a bowl and stick around while I also make some Japanese jelly crystal candy flavored with juniper berries (and also redbud blossoms) to put inside this juniper wood fencepost bowl!
Enjoy!

okay so you definitely deliver all the tree-based content we're here for, but man that scrub jay with its moment of introspection really stole the spotlight this time. (post-video edit: but is this your most fun project yet? heck yea. and I'm sure mr birb would agree. way to honour the old farm!)
Man that ‘What's in that Pile?’ theme always gets me.
Me too
I legit catch myself singing it when I'm looking through my laundry or any other pile
Truly one of the best jingles of our time
I've never seen so much passion, honesty, and transparency with a creator who just jumped in without being blindsighted by money or views, you're a one of a few gems on this platform
fr! bro has nearly 1mil subs but hes still humble as hell.
And while I will ALWAYS watch sponsors and not skip through it so they can get their money they need, since im not able to financially support anyone...Sometimes its nice to see someone doing something out of pure passion that they do for a hobby instead of monetizing it
As somebody who is 100 years old, I can confirm that this fence post is also 100. I'd recognize it anywhere.
😂😂😂
Nice to know it’s confirmed to be 100 years old.
@@randomthings9383 Well, you know what they say.
@@thebogsofmordor7356 and dey say and dey say and dey say and dey say
You are 100?! And posting to you tube? Thats awsome!
I think this was my favorite what's in that pile episode yet! Great work, I truly loved it.
Thanks! I agree!!
As an old woman in the woods I gotta say one more time I love your stuff. Every single time. Like your full videos best. Thanks.
I get Bob Ross vibes from your videos. They're so relaxing and positive. Thanks
I love finding out why my redbud tea looked so sad after the season for them is over. In all seriousness great video
Ah it’s still mid-season out here! Some helpful info for you next year at least haha!
It was very cool seeing the inside of such an old fence post. Also, that anti-capitalist bird was amazing and made me very happy.
So cool seeing a piece of sun bleached wood turning into such a beautiful bowl, and those candies look delicious! Thank you for sharing 💜
Who knew a humble Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay had so much to say about life?
There are so many fun parts to this video! From the fence parts, to the bowl carving, the chatty scrub jay, to the candy making, I think this is my favorite video you've made so far! SCIENCE!! ❤❤❤❤
I love that you are making more long form content lately! It's always a good day when you post, it amazes me with what you can do!
I've been really stressed the past few days, thinking through some big life decisions, and opening youtube to find not just a new Justin the Tree Man video, but a Justin the Tree Man video with chatoyancy on the thumbnail!? Exactly what I needed
Learning about trees has never been more fun. You do an amazing job, Mr. Justin Trees!!!
Justin Ð. Etrysz
>Justin ðe trysz
>Justin ðe treesz
>Justin ðe trees
pronounced Justin the trees (ð = voiced th sound, like thou, them, the, similar to þ = voiceless th, like think, thought)
I love the vibe of your videos, always so relaxing.
I'm actually planting a few hundred seeds around my family's farm here, so hopefully in a few years we'll have some nice dark walnut trees to enjoy
Did you say that was your grandpappy's land at one time? What a beautiful place! Definitely has the Old American West vibe out there... The Juniper bowl came out great!
That scrubjay is so incredibly based.
the missing part of the bowl just gives it a beautiful back story, I really love the colour of the wood.
if you get young branches of birch when they are still dark with white spots and peel off the bark, you are met with a moist green twig that smells like root beer and when you boil it with water for a while it and sweeten it, put it in the fridge, it’s tastes really good, enjoy it with some ice. i’d like to see you try it
Oh man, I love how that bowl turned out!! I was just looking at some old trees in my grandparents' yard thinking of you - they have an old, old black walnut tree that we used to harvest from to feed the squirrels over the winter. Thank you for all of your videos giving us more information on the amazing giants in our yards!
I have a turning tip for you. Use a piece of cloth/plastic between the wood and the chuck. Is will prevent the wood from being colored by the metal and potential markings. I saw the famous Richard Raffan do this in a video and i have tried it myself. I love your content
Oh how I waited for you to say "Chatoyancy" 😂 you really have conditioned me with that, congrats!
That Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay (had to look it up) made some excellent points and their singing is just beautiful. Those fence posts didn't look like they'd yield anything to my eye and I love that you proved me wrong. Thank you for another great video!
Not only did you get to forage for Juniper berries, but you also got to meet such a based scrubjay! that mustve been a nice day
What an action packed addition of what’s in that pile!! Please continue to bring in more content on this channel. It’s what I look forward to the most on my deployment! Especially the attention to our winged friends in the sky!! Would love to see more content related to your fascination of birds! We have mourning doves here in Iraq just like back in the states, but sing a completely different song than what we are accustomed to in the US!!! Keep rocking it, partner!!
@Mike Jantz
Thanks for serving sir, much respect. Amazing that you are finding Justin's channel all the way on the opposite side of the planer. I am Very interested to hear the mourning doves of iraq, do you have a video of the birds?
@@sheldonhatch8255 I unfortunately do not, but it sure is quite a pleasure to hear every once in awhile throughout my day!
Most fun project yet if you ask me. I just love Juniper.
loved this one, shout out to that scrub jay 🙏🏾 excellent bowl shape! and that wood is gorgeous.
scrub jay spittin facts
scrub jays are based
yknow it didn't occur to me that i knew so little about my namesake till i watched this! i'll have to get myself a juniper cuttin board sometime, the wood really is just plain gorgeous
Just me here watching another one of your videos in complete awe, no big deal
I absolutely love this series!!!
P.S. the bird part is fantastic, comrade
I love your videos amigo 😭😭🤧✨ i love how informative they are
Sagebrush steppe ecologist here, and damn I love me some juniper! I've always wanted to collect some and make gin. Mmm!
Affectionate sidenote: dioecious and monoecious are pronounced die-eeshus and mono-eeshus :) they're funky words but I dig them, they mean "two houses" and "one house" respectively.
Thanks for the always incredible vids!
Very cool! The bowl is beautiful and I didn’t know I could eat my lovely redbud blossoms! I need to make both candies. 😊
I'm going to make some of that candy. That looks like a very easy recipe to follow!
From one plant nerd to the next, dioecious is pronounced dye-eee-shus.
augh I watched like 3 videos to make sure I pronounced it right and couldn't get a straight answer from anyone lol, oh well, it's not one of my videos unless I sweat over a scientific pronunciation for 20 minutes and then just do it wrong anyway
@@Justinthetrees Hahaha. No big deal. I only bothered to say something because I figured you’d care. I used to research the evolution of dioecy so it just stood out.
@@mimimaitri1 okay, so then, is dioecy pronounced "dye-EE-see" or "DYE-see"?
@@PanEtRosa The first way, not like “dicey.”
Yeah!!! A new video! Really enjoyed the bowl. The candy! Everything! And, dude! You gotta sell t-shirts with ‘What’s in that Pile’ and ‘Chatoyancy’! I’d wear them everywhere! 👍
Same 😌
Absolutely incredible. As a local Ogdenite I absolutely love the local element of your videos. I love learning what I can do with local floral and fauna. Keep it up.
Woodwork and making food?
This is now the best channel on CZcams
Man, these videos are a pure shot of serotonin for the day. Always so cheery!
Free dopamine in here
Seriously these tree-themed candies and bowl are making my day
I came ~specifically~ for the 🎇🎶 C H A T O Y A N C Y🎶🎇. You did not disappoint 👏 even blessed us with come candy! I freaking love your videos 🥰
Miles is a certified Good Boy ❤
Sick bowl dude. Looked great. Would love to see some turned platters and wise dishes. Just cos I make them myself and you would be siiiiick at it
Bowl came out super great! I was super surprised it wasn't punky on the inside. Guess it shows just how resilient juniper is.
That juniper wood looked way more interesting than I anticipated!
that scrub jay was speaking straight facts tbh.
Those mountains in the background are so beautiful- love the reminder of how beautiful America can be. We’re in stick season where I am, so I’m incredibly jealous
I am watching the video, and while i watch i opened WoW to play a little and let me say, the video with the music in the background while Justin is shaping the wood, is something else ♥
such an amazing example of ur content. exploration, native plant appreciation, an interesting project, and a fun little treat to go with it. i always love your attitude and your enthusiasm. also really enjoyed hearing you talk a bit more about what you were doing when you were turning the bowl. fantastic job 💜
Bump. Love the content. Inspired me to take up working with wood again. Please keep doing it as long as it makes you happy.
That scrub jay is quite the little philosopher
I like how you shorted your short and added the link to watch the longer video. You got me lol. Good job
Both the bowl and the candy look really good, if I had red pedal trees near me I'd absolutely try that one
as an australian, its insane to me how close some people live to mountains. ive never never been on a large mountain, in a rainforest, or at a large canyon before. ive seen some pretty big creeks, large hills, and a huge desert, but god i wish i could visit america, canada, europe etc.
The farm is in such a gorgeous spot ! Looks like it’ll be perfect for camping 😁
Ikr
The scrub jay bit was really good lol
this is definitely one your prettier projects, and videos in general! the old farm has so many nice wildflowers growing in it and that candy in the bowl looks gorgeous!
Dude these videos are something else!! Absolutely love your energy and you fascination for what you’re doing, all the best my friend 😉
I didn’t know I loved chatoyancy, but, I’m here for it!
I love adventures in wood working with you! The fence post bowl from your family farm is so beautiful.
Thank you ❤
Such a sweet video I think everyone in your immediate family needs one of those bowls to keep a piece of such a special place close to home and heart.
Man, did I need this. An absolute treasure of a video, love the vase, and the message hit me hard. I was literally knitting as I watched this, and I realized that through my entire 2023, I don't think before that knitting project, I had ever made something...just to *make something.*
Definitely about to spend some time goofing off with yarn like I used to, and starting off the new year with a little more hope. Thanks, man ❤
You’re just too cool dude, your stuff is the best content on youtube!! ❤
Please never stop posting long form 🫶 forever my fave channel
Loved this one. I feel the need to make this candy!
I'm so glad I paused the video to read the scrub jay's rant 😂
You are like the Ben Levin of woodworking. Very similar styles I think. Creative, fun, and know a lot about your craft.
This was such a fantastic project! That bowl looks beautiful
Your appreciation for the imperfections and beauty of the wood are so charming. I really enjoy your videos!
Thank you for all your tree facts. I love it
This was fun to watch and jam packed with interesting information about junipers.. Thanks for sharing them with us
Please publish your recipes and potions. Also, that bowl is pure art with feeling. Thanks
Loved this bowl shape
That color coming in with the oil is just amazing. Love it.
Humorous, entertaining, and educational! This is amazing 🪵💚
You can also make sauerkraut with the juniper berries. Very fun project and tasty results after 2-3 weeks.
To be honest man, I’d watch any content you decide to put out. I love the conten but also your dialogue is amazing. We come for the person and stay for the content.
that's one wise scrub jay 😍
This was great and now I also have a new kind of candy to try making.
Random side note: Blueberries and Red Cabbage have a chemical that changes color in the same way. I bet a blueberry variant of the candy would work out ok.
I’m in love with miles ❤. He’s such a good boy.
Man these videos are great... you have claimed perhaps the greatest corner of the internet.
This was one of your best videos! Great job!
Lol the scrub jay dialogue “ownership is an illusion”😂😂
Love the long form, another great video and I love the out and about aspect to it ❤
Not only was that bowl beautiful but it’s always nice to find another pro-juniper person. The candy looked tasty, and you know I had to pause to read what you put for the scrub jay. I’ve gotta say, I wholeheartedly agree with that bird lol
Excellent content. Man I wish I had a friend like you living nearby sharing his bowls of candy.
You create such easy watching content, quite possibly my new favourite creator! Keep it up, I love that you educate us while letting our minds focus on the satisfying patterns in wood ❤️🍃🌲
The amount of sugar in candy really shouldn surprise me anymore, but it always does. Ill be trying your recipe and be on the lookout for juniper fences in my area.
What a lovely video and a gorgeous wood. The scrubjay also was a delight
What the bird has to say at 5:34 is just as interesting as this video. (Very interesting.) Keep up the good work!
Man i love wood carving, first thing i ever did was with a straight stick, a pocket knife, and three and a half hours. And it was just a sharpened stick
That was a delightful video, thank you for taking the time to share!
That bird went deep
I finished watching lotr today and, as usual, amazing
Beautiful project!
there's nothing better than seeing a notification for one of your videos pop up! i really hope youtube works out for you!
As a southerner, I will never not be thrown off by the fact that "pile" in the jingle has 2 syllables. :P
AHHH I love that you mentioned BlackForager!! ❤️❤️
Love the anti capitalist scrub jay✨
Edit: The bowl turned out so pretty and those candies sound delicious😋
