- Documenting Rock Tumbling self collected apatite crystals in a rotary tumbler. Not my best results, but I show the steps and have some fun.
Here is the link to the video where crystals were collected: • Rockhounding - Appetit...
I just got a new tumbler so Im going back and watching all your tutorial videos.....I remember when you collected all that apatite....What a fun time.
That is awesome!
I bought a Apatite necklace at a jewelry store, and paid Kings Ransom for it, literally, they used a shiny convect backing which made this stone look like a jewel in a crown, it was surrounded by 18 tiny diamonds, and it was about an 8 carat stone, Thank You, for showing the raw uncut version, I know the stone is Not worth what I paid for it, but it totally enchanted me
They cut nicely but are somewhat soft for jewelry. Take good care of it so it doesn't get scratched and don't clean with anything containing acid. If you like it, then it is a good stone. ;-)
I think they came out nicely. Good to know about cutting down the tumbling time and grit. Thanks for a cool experiment.
i think they turned out great!! they look very earthy and natural instead of a completely clear job that looks like dyed glass
another cool video !!!!
A meMiner haven't seen ya in a bit love your videos brother great education and always love to see what you do turn out
I was away moose hunting. Actually, it was moose hiking. Walking around and not shooting. I only heard one as it ran away. On the bright side, I saw a big wolf. That was cool but too far away to get a video. I am sure that I will see plenty of moose when I am deer hunting if a few weeks. Last year, I saw 14. LOL
Wow I wasn't expecting such a good result, what a difference from start to finish. Nice to see that epic pocket of apatite you found produced some decent material. I think a lot of that could be used for jewelry or other decorative items.
Your vids are great! I love the rapid-fire editing. A nice change from many of the other longer tumbling vids/channels. Keep it up!
Thank you very much!
It looks like some of them turned out nice enough for you to set in jewelry. Beautiful shad of green. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
It was interesting to me and makes me want to try again.
Alas. I said to myself today...Self.. have you seen Meminer, wonder if he is ok..and viola a notification rolled thru..yes I had learned this soft tumbling lesson not once but twice..thanks so much for the education..always learning from you...
I was up north without internet access. I posted this on the drive home. I got no good video while away. ;-(
Very too the point, not a lot of wasted time. Great teaching. Thank you.
That came out better than I had thought. I was sure they were going to shatter. Glad you got some nice ones.
I learned to sort them better before tumbling. ;-)
I must say that was very interesting about the apatite and how the turned out was quite surprised as you. Thank you for the experience my friend.🤗🐶
Next time, I will try to work on apatite with a flat lap.
Nice looking Apatite !!! Nice looking Hat !!!! :)
The hat belongs to my daughter Amy. She wasn't wearing it, so I took it. ;-)
theres something about your videos that just make me so happy!! another great tumble, they look fantastic!
Thanks for the nice comment. Happy happy.
I really just want to tell you, I love all of your videos! I really enjoy watching everyone of them and you also! You always have an awesome attitude and it always brightens my day and increases my passion for rock hounding! Thank you for sharing!!!
Thanks Mike! I have fun and appreciate it when others tag along and enjoy themselves. Good luck your hounding.
I loved them. I think you're on to something. Can't wait to see another go 'round with a "soft" stone.
Looks great! Again thank you for sharing and your endeavors. Your optimism is great!
Just gorgeous 👍👍👍🏴🏴🏴
Granted I've only been tumbling for a little bit... My general rule for myself is that if I would be heartbroken if a particular rock turned to dust, then it doesn't go in the tumbler. If not, chuck it in and see what happens! (I'm a little loose and fast with the tumbling "rules") Sometimes neat coloring/features are worn away, other times new coloring/features appear. It's a strange gamble, but sometimes I hit the jackpot on a few rocks. Some of those look like frosted glass. I wonder If a slice on the vibratory lap could do them up.
They are too small and light for the vibratory lap, but I might try to polish on a regular flat lap this winter.
meMiner as always mate, your videos are just a pleasure to watch and learn from. Quick question,
So for softer material, you do less time each round? And I guess you’d have to keep a closer eye on them?
I’m only used to the hard ones so far.
Thank you for all your work man, always great👍👍👍
Your basically my tumbling guru, as well as Symon, I popped this vid in my helpful rock videos playlist. It’s the only way I know how to share without Facebook.
All the best mate. 💎
meMiner
Ah awesome man, thank you for the guidance and good luck with the next one dude 👍
Quite the process, great video!
Good job man. You did better than I did tumbling that material. ;) you missed your opportunity to use the word "friable" lol!
I used it! It's been a long time since I used it last. It seems to go right up there on the vocab list beside frangible for airfield objects.
Thank you!
@@loa81 Lol so if the friable crystals were flying, they'd become frangible! Haha! Thanks for teaching me a new word!
Flying apitite Batman!
Frangible signs and markers on airfields are made to breakaway to lessen the damage to the aircraft if there is an accident. It should also work for flying apitite!
Only time I might use that word that sounds like "friable" when I say something such as "the friable rock won't split". Probably have to edit it out to keep my video family friendly. LOL
@@meMiner Hahahaha! "This *firable* rock just won't co-operate for Fox Lake!" - meMiner throws tools at rock...
I remember you finding a freaking lot of them ,,,! What was that 4 ,5 containers fill from one dig ,,! ? Oh yeah !,, that was a good day ,,! Thank you 🙏 Blessings...
That was a good day. I have never repeated it. On the other hand, I did not go back to the spot this year yet. There is still time. ;-)
How long can I live in Canada before I have go for citizenship?. This place is a joke !,, I love Colorado and I know it is ant so great anywhere else but it’s worth trying !,, sorry I woke up in pain today and mad as hell about this Trump crap to I think I watched enough Hockey to now the anthem ,,! Oh Canada 🇨🇦....sorry buddy I’m in a bad way ,,,,,! Wooo
i liked every phase of the tumbling........
It is always fun to revel the rocks from the slurry...
great video mate
Question....Watch your videos and learn and enjoy them. I'm a senior and have a 13 year old neice that loves rocks and minerals but doesn't have the opportunity to visit places to find them. Wondering how I might get in touch with you to put some of your finds together and that way she could watch the videos that go with the rock or mineral....? We live in Texas on the Gulf Coast.
"All my my exes live in Texas". Great song. My email is meminerrocks@gmail.com.
Yes, it is true. There really are rocks so soft they melt in our tumblers! Sorry you lost some nice sized crystals.
Those friable ones you mentioned and tossed are the cause of the dull finish. I will still tumble some that are particularly nice which may have pits, holes, or cracks. I'm just super careful to clean them well before the next step.
Do you have more apitite? I hope, if you do, you'll consider another tumbling attempt. They are so beautiful!
Oh, by the way, whatever did you do with the larger crystals?
Thank you again for another cool video.
I gave some of the crystals away, but still have plenty left. In fact, I cleaned out my truck last night and found a couple of small bottles under my seat with some of the better ones. I will try it again with the friable ones.
@@meMiner lol! Are they friable in olive oil or lard!
I found this channel by accident, but I think I've come to really love the idea of rock collecting. A question from a complete noob: how do you go about identifying minerals in the field? To me, dirty rocks are pretty indistinguishable
The best way to get started is go where something has been found before and look for the same. Lots of info online on where to go if you spend some time Google keywords such as the location and "mineral", "crystal", "gold", etc.
That was interesting. I wondered if they could be tumbled.
Awesome would have loved to seen that video here in Kentucky are gun season opens on the 10 lol I will be hunting hard got a couple nice buck around hope I get one before the neighbor's get them lol
Bow season is now open here for deer. Gun is for two weeks in Nov. Amy and I will try a few times after school for the first week and then I head north to hunt with the guys for the second week. Good luck with your hunt.
Now that's soft for sure you did get nice ones probably right about having to find some large ones but where?! It's making hungry now!!, Thanks Mr.MeMiner!!!
I have some buckets of apatite that I should sort thru to try another tumble. The nice thing about soft rock, is they tumbler rather quick. I wasn't going to post this video because it was not one of my best but heck, we all can learn...
Dude!!! Use. ENGLISH if you are going to make a comment IN THIS COUNTRY!!!
Nice👍. Thank u.
really beautiful apatite from this tumble. have you thought about selling these? i’m developing a little mineral collection and having even a thumbnail apatite from your hounding would have much more sentimental value than bought from somewhere online. i would search for my own, but texas minerals are few and far between from where I am, and college keeps me busy. thx for the cool update!
Keep your money for books and beer (in that order). Send me an email meminerrocks@gmail.com. I will try to look after you.
Beautiful!
Great job! Beautiful! I spy with little my eye a runaway gemmy one on the left side of the tumbler around the 10 o'clock position at 7:45. 😲. Quick go save it!
I spy with my little eye something that is green. LOL
Now taking scraps. All apatite and other hornblends, ill take them all. I will pay shipping
Fantastic 💚🌳
Hola Amigo!!! Muy interesante el video!!! Mil bendiciones!!!
Odd question, how would you feel about someone sending you a rock to get cut and polished? Lol (i would still have to look into shipping cost and all that) so mainly just a curiousity at the moment. Love the vids keep it up!
I am always interested in playing with a new rock. The problem of course is shipping costs are awful. I am in Port Perry, Ontario. I suspect you will find it is not worthwhile.
Yeah, currently trying to figure out how much it would cost to ship a 2lb rock + to ship back a slice of it or whatever lol, my idea was maybe get a slice or 2 (not sure) and you keep the rest for your collection, it's a tiffany stone lol if that would be alright with you anyways. But first gotta figure out all the bunches of stuff before i even think of setting anything in "stone"....that was a horrible pun lol
Gyönyörűek, és természetes a színűk! Nem szeretem a festett ásványokat mert természetelllenes! Sajnos árúlnak festettet is!
Why did you add the beads? Love learning things with you!
A rotary tumbler should be more than half full. The beads are a filler, plus help cushion the rocks.
Thanks so much for explaining!!!
meMiner what happens if it’s about of a 1/4 of a way full?
Oops 4:40 a 9 o'clock position
very nice
Wow nice stones
I have always loved collecting rocks- but I never knew what any of them were. I recently inherited someones rocks and fossil collection. I even have a dessert rose. Amethyst cluster, and what I think is a large piece of fools gold flakes- but not sure. I like having them anyways. i was just collecting rocks for their shapes- mostly hearts, but now I look for the pretty crystals too.
A fellow rockhounder once told me: "if you like it, that's all that matters". He was right. I am pleased you have rocks that you like.
Were some of these from cameron quarry? If so how abundent are they?
I sure will
Lindas pedras aqui tem muitas apatita, beauty apatite
Goddamnit!!! I don't want to see rocks you have already gathered.,..........I want to see the gathering of the rocks.......!!!!! That's what these videos are SUpposedto be about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Really?
I want them naturally
The video says, rock tumbling... not rock hunting, or rock collecting.
Awesome to know I’m about to try it myself
Let me know how it works out and if you learned something that I should know. I will try it again in a short while.
They would look great in a glass bowl on a window ledge 😊
That is a nice idea. I wonder how long they would last there before my wife moved them?
@@meMiner glue them down lol
Fantastic. Have u ever thrown them into a tumbler with corn husks to help polish them like a buffer
I have not tried that in a rotary tumbler but have polished silver nuggets with walnut shell in a vibratory tumbler. It did a nice job.
can u search for smoky quarts?
Informative video, bad luck man, soft rock is always precarious but these even more so, on the up side you can see all of the gemmy pieces, have fun with them, I'm still waiting for you to cut the strawberry quartz.
The strawberry quartz is sitting on my desk awaiting me to assemble my new flat lap.
meMiner
Have you been a bad boy and spent lots of money on a gem cutting arm etc.
Quick question I found a 4.6lb terminated apatite, I'm thinking a museum is the best place for it. Or am I just flattering myself thinking it's rare. What's your opinion?
Congrats on a large apatite! A local museum might be happy to get it and put it on display as to what can be found in the area.
These really green! I bet you can sell them!!
タンブルにする機械5万円くらいするのは高いのか安いのか……単純な構造なので外国だともっとお手軽価格とかで買えそう。
thank so much
Do you have someone you send rocks to for Lap work or do you have your own rig? Interesting what happened to these...
I have the tools. I need to start using them
Looks like they tumbled down to pebbles pretty quickly. I'd say it was a good experiment.
yep
Hey meMiner! What brand of tumbler do you use? I've recently gotten back into tumbling and am ready to step up my game.
I have a couple of Lortones. No reason other than that was what was available at the time.
Thanks for the reply! I love your channel and have learned a lot from watching your videos. Using bar soap for a final burnishing has changed everything!
Can you tell me what kind of rock Tumblr you recommend for a beginner and something not too expensive
I like any of them that have a rubber barrel (no plastic). The rocks don't care about the brand. If you are in the USA, there are usually some great deals sometimes on a new tumbler from Harbor Freight. I use Lortone because that is what was available locally to me. If you have patience, I would suggest setting up a notification online with one of the sites where people sell stuff like Kijiji or Craigslist. Look for a tumbler where they still have some of the original grit that came with the kit...Then you know you found somebody who got it as a gift or quickly lost interest and the machine is basically new. Usually they just want it gone and ask low $$ for it. Jump on it quickly, before somebody else (therefore the notification). Good luck.
I wonder can you save the slurry after each opening and reuse it again?
Some people do. There are a couple of problems. Grit wears down and becomes less effective. You would want to remove any tiny bits of rock, especially going into fine grit and polish, so they don't scratch during your tumble. If you store the slurry, it will likely quickly harden in the container. The one stage that might be worthwhile saving is polish, as long as you get any contaminates out.
These look exactly life the ones I collected from Bancroft, is that where these are from?
Tory Hill
Wow, that’s sooo B E A utiful . MeMiner
Thanks so much Zenaida. By the way, you have a beautiful name.
meMiner , thank you.....

Good day sir you gays are so luckey to have all those things to get them so nice here we have to use our own enovation to import is very expensive

May I know what is that box called? Tumbler box?
The machine is just called a rock tumbler. This one was made by Lortone.
im looking for amber stone
You to meMiner good luck
😎😎SHOW 👏👏👏👏
muito bom
Obrigado por assistir
you prolly dont care but if you are bored like me during the covid times then you can stream pretty much all the latest series on instaflixxer. Been binge watching with my gf lately =)
@Jax Declan definitely, been using instaflixxer for years myself :)
What brand of rock tumbler do you use? Any suggestions on one in particular that I won't have to sell my kidney for? Lol
I use Lortone, only because that brand was available to me. I would suggest getting a tumbler with a rubber barrel and not plastic. I have had a few plastic ones in the past and they did not hold up, wore out and leaked. I have used the rubber barrels over and over. If you are in the US, take a look at Harbor Freight...Sometimes they have sales and the price is excellent. The other option is to buy used. I have seen some really good deals on local markets like Craigslist and Kijji. Set up notification, so as soon as one is posted that you get an email. Especially look for somebody who is selling one with some of the original grit that comes in the kit. That tells you that it was hardly used. Many people buy a tumbler and never use it.
Thank you so much for the advise. I'm in Tennessee. Lortone was one of the brands I was looking into as well. I've been on Amazon looking too. I'll definitely try Craig's list and harbor freight. I really enjoy your videos. They are fun and informative. Keep up the great work!
Good luck with your projects.
👍
They looked better before you tumbled them & were much bigger. But if you like them...that's all that counts.
Good thing I have lots. ;-)
do you have amber stone
I have never found any amber. It is nice and I like the look of it, especially when it contains a little bug or something.
They look like Peridot
that nice
Thanks
Berapakah harga apetite per karatnya..?
I have never seen it sold that way. It is not great for jewelry because it is somewhat soft.
Still pretty
i just love to get amber for ring ears ring
I want one me miner😩😍😍
I have a piece of grandidierite for sale if anybody wants it
