The corruption ended up being bad memory and was addressed in this stream: czcams.com/video/JRy2V9bJqqE/video.html
Funny thing is it worked in Windows, but not Linux with memory. However, after fixing this, the game verification process ended up taking about 30 seconds lol. Just wanted to update everyone.

Dude, I had the same issue with proton up-qt, i could not get it to grab new GE versions...but watching you grab flat seal and enabling the home folder instantly fixed it. Thanks man. I am learning so much. Gaming on Linux is moving fast, and every few months new things to try and new games that get working. Cant wait for you updated gaming guide. The current one is definitely helpful but also very dated as you even pointed out in your stream a few weeks back.

I recently tried jumping from Debian to Arch and it is just not worth all of that work just to have to deal with all of the bullshit that comes along with it, not for me. I recently just learned how to add two ppa's to Linux Mint to install mainline kernels and updated mesa drivers and I played Starfield all weekend long with no issues. Wish I would have learned these options a long time ago when I had issues with an old kernel and/or driver on Mint because it would have totally stopped me from distro hopping. Oh well, I know now.

Given your background and knowledge I'd love to see you going in on the custom ini files. Specifically the customizations for making sensitivity feel relative to games like Apex or Overwatch. They have some weird xy scaling where horizontal is more then vertical making the shooting feel bad. Alot of people who play Fallout 76 have been using the ini customizations in Starfield. It's just a mess and hard to understand what each thing is doing and I know your the guy to figure it out.

1:27:50 you mentioned about supporting 4K and that really piqued my attention. I just bought a new TCL tv. Supposedly 4K 120 HZ. Indeed, 1080p runs at 120 hertz no problem but as soon as I set the resolution to 4k, it immediately drops to 30 Hertz maximum. I can't find a whole lot of information about this particular TV online, whether it's marketing and 120 hertz is only supported at 1080P and they just don't tell you, or if it's a Linux issue. Is there a way to Force higher refresh rates in Linux? I'm running Zorin OS (Ubuntu/Debian based) with gde. Fairly new to Linux which is why I'm running a build instead of straight up Debian.
Xorg is also one of my running processes, I'm thinking some of the window transparencies that I've enabled are probably the reason for that.
To be clear, I am running an RX 480 graphics card. It does support 4K 60hz so even though I can't get the full 120, I still don't understand why it's only allowing me to go as high as 30 hertz.

As much as I love Linux, I just ran into too many issues whether it be performance, or just weird artifacts and crashes if I wanted to use Linux as my only gaming platform. That as well as there are just some games that will not run under Linux what-so-ever.. As great as Proton DB is, I think a lot of it is users getting it to work at first but not verifying if it works throughout the game. We can't tell if they were able to play a game completely through with little to no glitches/crashes at all other than how much time they spent on it. Most are an hour or less, or just a few hours.
I can say that I was able to play Resident Evil Village completely through on Linux though with some minor graphical glitches.
I will say, trying to get some games to run on Linux makes me feel like when we were all on DOS and had to create multi-configs to make a game run. Remember all the himem.sys and config.,sys tweaking? Multi-config booting was a godsend back in those days. :)
In any case, I will constantly be trying out Linux to see if it will work, but I can't make it my daily driver unfortunately right now. But I do use it for development training as I mainly do Java and C# Web development. I can't use it at work because work has us stuck on Windows and doesn't really give us Linux workstations. My choice is either Windows or MacOS.

As much as it makes Chris cringe, you should use a gaming distro on a newer kernel like Garuda that will have everything you need out of the gate. I have zero problems playing games, and I'd say its been stable for a couple of years now thanks to valve, proton and wine. The only games you can't play are the ones developers block you from playing on Linux with anticheat. Not a linux issue.

Should probably run btrfs or ZFS with that disk corruption, it'll give you a much clearer indications as to what's going on and whether you drive is failing. They're slower filesystems, but they do all the checksumming to tell you early when your data is corrupted. You've probably been having silent data corruption piling up for a while.

I know it sounds weird but, if I update my Windows partition, the permissions get written over on my Linux drive, this makes it impossible even to download anything in linux as files are locked to windows, open your own file browser and you should see padlocks on your filess, the issue you are getting is a side effect of this. I have to go back into windows and enable fast boot. run some commands in cmd to restore fast boot, once back into windows it is all restored to normal.

I had the same issue with Steam corrupting my installs a little while ago, only on my secondary SATA SDD drive, but my primary NVME drive was fine.
First, I thought I broke something on my Arch installation getting wireless VR working, so I just did a fresh installation. Still was still was having corrupted steam installations ONLY on my secondary drive; Then I thought it was drive failure on the secondary drive, completely wiped and made a new ext4 filesystem, still having corrupt installations just on that drive.
From there I had to make sure it wasn't just steam being weird, copied 200 GBs of media on the secondary drive, all copied fine and run with no issues; I've run a couple of fsck's from a live USB on my drives over the last couple days and everything comes up clean. I have to assume it's steam being strange at this point.
EDIT: After further testing it is definitely a stick of failing ram I had, after removing the problematic hardware the issue has been fixed.

Arch if when updating to often like every will receive many untested of beta updates, so yeah it will be prone to break, mb try reducing the update cycle a bit?
i myself use kubuntu 23.04 so breakage so far, but i admit there are bugs and weird things happen like freezing, or some service failing to shut down, rarely tho.
I would say if u like u using linux and u don't have problems trouble shooting over weird issues and go around configure the OS to your liking, linux is really good and makes u learn a lot, like improving research and improve skills on using a PC.
Otherwise if ur not on for that and you want to get an OS that at least "works as advertised" then well don't force yourself, there is no problem with going back to windows, maybe come back some day in the future or just use linux on a 2nd less important machine, etc.

I moved from windows (10+ years) to Mint and have had zero issues, still on the same install after two years cause I'm too lazy to fresh install...but the point is, it doesn't need to! TOTALLY stable and better than windows.

I haven't experienced breaking my Arch. I followed Titus' advice. Used lts kernel, timeshift, etc.
I'm just using NVIDIA card, and it sucks.
I learned to use what drivers to install, etc.
Moving from Debian to Arch after 3 days was a dumb idea for a beginner, lmao.
Im planning on maybe trying Endeavor or other Arch-based distro first since I'm only a week to GNU/Linux, so I would see what I like and install it on Arch when I get back.

@rodrigo.55 it's why I came to Arch, I wanted to learn by breaking things. That's how I gained skills in Windows more than a decade ago. Learning the hard way is sometimes more effective for me :)

For people who use the GPU for more than gaming and viewing the browser use Nvidia. The Nvidia drivers on Linux are incredibly good, if not better than AMD's, and everything Nvidia offers is included. With AMD you must switch between the small and simple Open Source driver and the Pro-driver to be able to fully use the GPU.
I would say that now that Wayland works so well (at least with Nvidia) you are not a real Linux user if you use the extremely insecure X11. 😊

Lol all the windows fan boys in the comment section. I ran starfield with not a single crash on Arch using the BUDGIE DE. It ran better on linux then it did on windows. People just love to trash on linux. Only thing that upsets me about linux is the AC situtation.

what is AC? I tried searching on google `linux ac` but all I get is `ac - print statistics about users' connect time`

also things bad with linux for me is nvidia proprietary driver:
x11 vsync only properly works full-screen, no windows in front, otherwise screen tearing
`qemu-system-x86_64 -display gtk,gl=on` shows black screen on x11
xwayland glx is terrible (especially in android studio's emulator)

It was definitely a hardware issue that is causing the corruption. I even mentioned in the video that my steamdeck just works and I don't have any issues on it.

    • @methos1024
      @methos1024 Před 9 měsíci

That install was with btrfs. i saw a section in the video - installing arch - where he uses btrfs commands. The corruption was probably (uneducated guess) because of btrfs together with steam. some incompatibility shit. I had that problem myself in the past with btrfs, ext4 is fine.
But i am not completely rouling out a hardware issue.

linux isn't only made for servers, sure it's not ready for gaming, but for example programming? by far the best option. Web surfing? sure go right ahead. Doing some office work? with office 365 having a browser version you don't even have to use libre office and can use what your coworkers use. Just because linux isn't supported for gaming doesn't mean that it's only for servers, there are more uses for pcs than just gaming and servers

In general, people seems to like Linux and the flexibility with all distros, themes, window managers etc... but running MS apps in the browser, not really Linux. About programming yes, creating C++ programs in Linux is great but running Visual studio in an Windows environment is still superior among most companies.
