I think Martin’s Voice perfectly matches CGI Thomas’s face. It’s bubbly, lighthearted, Round, but clearly not a kid, more a teenager. Now, the acting on the other hand is not so swell

John Hasler and Eddie Glen are my favorite Thomas voices too! What a coincidence!
Also, I wish Eddie Glen was given a proper interview about the role of Thomas in TATMRR. I mean, we got previous interviews with Neil Crone, Susan Roman and Linda Ballantyne regarding their fond memories working on the movie, but never Eddie Glen (no the bonus archival interview does not count). There was one interview with Eddie Glen at one point, but I was very disappointed that they didn't think about talking to Eddie about the film. The live-action actors get all the credit, but the voice artists had few interviews somewhere in between, and seriously, everyone SHOULD know who the voice of Thomas in the film really is and deserves more recognition!
And given how Eddie tours theater productions in Canada and the UK, who'd have thought his English accent is SOOOO good!

Gotta say, it's true that I'm nostalgic for Martin since I grew up with the US dub of HOTR, but yeah, Eddie Glen is the definitive Thomas voice for me, though there's no doubt John Hasler slays his VA work, especially musically. I thought Joesph May was good up until JBS as well. And being extremely partial to Carlin, my ideal Classic Series cast would have only Angelis voicing James because it's absolutely iconic.

The British accents are so fake in the final cut, provided by Canadian voice actors like him and Neil Crone. John Bellis’ voice sounded more natural for him despite how some people think he’s too old. For me, I think either he or Ewan McGregor were fine. I much prefer Thomas characters being voiced by real British actors (Sometimes Australian) than American or Canadian ones.

Thomas would have been 96 when The Railway Series books came to a close in 2011

While I do agree that John Bellis' Thomas is a bit deep. But, I will offer an alternate opinion on it. Thomas has matured since season one and is 84 years old in Thomas and the Magic Railroad. He is not a young, energetic, annoying tank engine anymore. He grew out of that. Now he is older. Yes, he can still be cheeky and does have bit of an ego. But, he is the one who took Lily back to America through the magic railroad.
And to anyone who says "BuT TatMRR iSN't CaN0N" or "TatMRR TAkeS PlAce DurIng SeAsON 2". Both of those are incorrect
TatMRR is in it's own timeline that is separate from the UK timeline. I see it as taking place as a finale to the shining time station series (although unintentionally)
Plus, TatMRR canonically takes place in 1999. You can tell by the vehicles and buildings.

Eddie Glen is without a doubt my favorite take on Thomas (2nd being Ringo Starr if you're counting narrators). Not only because I grew up with TATMR, but generally I just think it has the best mixture of young and maturity in a Thomas voice. John Bellis is pretty good too, but not exactly the best fit for Thomas.
Thoughts on the other Thomas voices:
Martin Sherman: Bland and generic. Nuff said.
Joseph May: Not a bad take, has some of the youthful-ness from Eddie, but maybe a lil too raspy-sounding at times.
Ben Small and John Hasler: Grouping these 2 together cause I haven't watched the UK dub as much, but going off just this vid and some episodes I saw... they ain't too bad. I like em.

How is that justified for goodness sake, I hate how all of you just to ignore John Bellis with High Pitch Voice from TATMR Original Trailer that literally sounded very young and not old, also this youtuber never addressed that AT ALL. Come on, I can do far better researched than this and I'm want to be the Thomas Fan Version of Elvis The Alien.

I knew John Hasler would be number one on the list but seeing Eddie Glenn in a tie actually surprised me. Eddie was a much better fit for Thomas in Thomas and the Magic Railroad, more so than John Bellis.
John Hasler is just fantastic from start to finish. From speaking to singing, Hasler nailed his performance as Thomas. His voice for Thomas is just unbeatable.

In my opinion Martin Sherman was better than Ben Small, because Ben has a really high pitch voice, which absolutely does not fit Thomas. Martin on the other hand, is more mature. Just like Joseph May. Really Useful voice actors.

I’m quite surprised that you didn’t put that ‘middle aged man off the street’ in 6th place. 😃 The 6th place guy sounds much more fitting on Thomas, even if the accent is American (although I agree with your point that Thomas is a very British character - I can’t stand George Carlin for this reason). From a professional standpoint, the 5th voice would most certainly be last (although it isn’t bad)
Hm.. most of the ‘emotional’ clips shown are all shouting sequences, didn’t see much sadness, anger, fear in there. Not just Thomas but you’ll find that American VOs in general are less intense than British ones. The British voices seem to be more theatrical most of the time.
Surprising ranking though, I never did realise that there were so many Thomas voices.

I agree with your list, I'm not going to lie, I slammed my fists on your placement for Joseph May, but now I understand and agree with your placing because your reasoning makes a lot of sense. I get where you are coming from when you say "Thomas is a British train, he should sound British" but honestly, I don't mind? I'm speaking from a biased perspective considering I grew up with the US dubs haha. Also, I have to admit, I have ALWAYS imagined Thomas with a Liverpudlian accent, I just think it really fists him.

i personally believe john bellis to be a good voice for thomas, and if we're going with the critique that he sounded too old for him, i refer to the director's cut of the chase scene in the magic railroad. within the video, you hear bellis attempt a higher pitch. this was also present in an old promo trailer for the movie. though i do agree with mark being the perfect voice.

I may have to go with John Hasler as the best. The last time I watched the show was 8 months ago, and I was too busy watching every episode ever to take note of voice actors. The only thing I remember is that I didn't really care for John Bellis, the original Magic Railroad voice. He's probably a nice guy, but voice-wise, he didn't do anything for me...

I flipping LOVE John Hasler’s Thomas! I’ve recently got back in to Thomas and oh how much I’ve missed it! I was of course a huge fan as a child, growing up with some of season 1 and the early HIT era, along with the season 12 and 13 change, though this was close to when I left it behind, don’t know why I ever did. So I remember hearing Ben Small as Thomas back then, I thought it was nice, but MAN John Hasler is just perfect! For me at least, especially when he singsđŸ„čand I’m so glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t like the US dub, mainly because they are from the UK, and I just can’t stand it. Anyway, those are just my opinions😊

Ben sounds like an elf. Martin sounds like an adult with a teenage ring. It really depends on whether are from the UK or US. If you want Thomas to sound like a kid then go with ben. If you want a more natural sound then do Martin. Ben sounds like a man trying to sound like a kid whereas, Martin's real voice actually sounds pretty close to his Thomas voice, an example would be Adventures on Orsum Island he played the young man character.
