This SUV has some surprising issues: Honda HR-V Vi X 2023 review

  • There is no denying the new-generation 2023 Honda HR-V Vi X looks the part, but it is seriously let down by a few key things.
    The engine is a dud, according to our family reviewer Emily Agar. She spent a full week in the car, did a couple of big road trips, and found it to be lazy and underpowered - largely due to the CVT automatic robbing the power from it.
    That wasn't the only thing that frustrated her during the test. It is incredibly loud inside the cabin, and there are only four seats instead of five.
    Now, there are some really impressive things about the HR-V, too - watch the video to find those out - but when you factor the cost of this model into the other considerations, and think about rivals like the Toyota C-HR, Mazda CX-30, Kia Seltos and Hyundai Kona, the 2023 Honda HR-V Vi X already feels like its behind the pack.

    1 big thing that is missing from current Honda is : the excitement of wanting to buy and owning a HOnda , any HONDA MODELs, like it used to be with Honda in 90-2000s.

    Ouch. Good honest review. I think Honda has completely lost its way. The previous model's 1.8ltr is a slug, so the new 1.5ltr, with less power, is a strange decision by Honda.

      I have a 2021 HRV RS and while the 1.8l is no firecracker, it's adequate. Put a 1.5l non-turbo under the bonnet and it's just sad.

      Not to mention losing an extra seating space. I use to love Japanese vehicles back in the 90s and early 2000s but they definitely have lost their way. This car is also uglier than outgoing model.

    6/10 is one of the lowest scores I've seen a car journo give out. If Honda isn't trying to eke out every cent it can before it departs Australia, its product strategy sure is leading it that way.

    If you drive the car in a sensible way, it is fine, these car reviewers are possessed about power and putting their foot down, what's the rush! With increased speed comes higher risk!
    It's a great all round car.

      Sometimes when merging on to a motorway having something that has better acceleration just makes it easier. Also if the car is fully loaded for a road trip it will feel even slower.

    Thank God Stephen Collins has retired. Only 4 seats, a smaller boot and a puny 1.5l engine for $37k can have only one goal in mind .... minimal sales, a Collins trademark.

    I have seen 7 reviewes on this car and you are the only one who gave 6/10. All the others gave 8/10. I drove the car and fell in love with it. The motor doesn't give that kick because it's a FULL HYBRID! I drove the Toyota Yaris Cross (I am 183cm tall and the wheel hit my knees). I also drove the Kia Niro, XCEED, and Sportage and felt best in the Honda and that is why I chose it.

    • @adi2082
      @adi2082 Před 2 měsíci

      The version reviewed in the video is not the hybrid and is just a 1.5 cylinder non turbocharged engine, which is why it makes so much noise.

  • @stevenbradford1662
    @stevenbradford1662 Před rokem +4

    Good review. I test drove the petrol only model this week. Underpowered and noisey. Cheap looking interior and it even has an awful vinyl covered steering wheel cover. I understand there is a turbo model overseas. Honda has lost its way in Australia. The exterior style is good but that is about all.

  • @shaunihead
    @shaunihead Před rokem +3

    I've been a passenger in one of these and the driver accelerated to 100 up an on-ramp. It was taken at medium throttle and the car does take a longer to get there but it seems pretty normal inside the car just slower.
    Yep, this car deserves more oomph, but seems if you accept the lack of outright power and ease back a bit on the loud pedal things are not so loud.
    Pressing hard brings the noise for no reward.
    Cruising at 100 was super relaxed - this one didn't even have mats and conversation in the front was normal at 100.
    To understand my perspective I drive 2 fast accelerating premium cars - it wouldn't be for me, but I quite liked it.
    Big downside is the manual fuel cover release - the position is awful

    • @cityplanner3063
      @cityplanner3063 Před rokem +1

      That’s just what a CVT is like, which I hate. If you accelerate hard the rpm just stay near red line. Plus only 1.5L engine it is ok on the Highway but after test driving it I wouldn’t feel confident overtaking with it on a Highway

    • @kenphillips7594

      Philippines and Malaysia can have the 1.5 turbo's and their distances and open spaces are less than our's. Is this another Stephen Collins stuff up?

    Why can't Honda get it right with cabin noise? A loud cabin just screams low quality budget car which is just not good enough

    • @abaj006
      @abaj006 Před rokem

      Actually all Japanese and Korean cars in this segment and price point have very loud cabin NVH (I drive a lot of rentals). I can't speak for Eruopean or Luxury cars, because I have not driven them.

    File the 2023 HRV as "Things that are Junk."
    Same steering issues as the Civic. Turn off the lane assist and you'll find it's not the lane assist, it's the steering unit.
    Don't use the rear defrost because it will cause the back window to shatter.
    Some already have peeling paint
    The back brakes are always rubbing

    I just sold my brand new HRV hybrid advance which we only did 3000kms from zero.. it was bloody horrendous. The hybrid system is beyond terrible. The thing just revs like crazy.. constantly high rpm revving even sitting at lights. Driving slowly in traffic or slowing at a roundabout, all of a sudden it rev'd so high people would turn around and wonder if there was a problem.. you know when you accidently slip it into neutral? Yeah that sound constantly.. honda said it was normal as it is recharging the battery.. basically never ran on the battery and the fuel economy was so bad Im assuming due to the tiny engine which rev'd its nuts off constantly.
    Hated the ACC which cant be switched off to just conventional cruise control..
    Point of story... dont buy one. Run away, save your money and buy something else. Seriously.
