I have a 2018 silverado and so far I been towing a 4500 lbs trailer for 4yrs with no issues, I love that truck I get between 12 to 15 mpg when towing, great mllige.
The best Half ton Truck is the one that has all the right numbers to fit your needs and that's different for everyone . 👍 for me it's Ram because I love Ram Truck's and I live full time in my Jayco sense cov hit and I gave my house to my youngest son . I got a new Ram 4x4 off road package and my Jayco 195 RB the same day and I hit the Road living 99% off grid tax free . 37 states later I'm still living full time RV life . I'm the happiness I've ever been debt free and tax free .I'm impressed with this Jayco its been great 👍 , easy to pull and it pulls good . The only problems I've had with it is simple trim fixes but heck I've pulled thousands of miles and some bumpy roads too . It's warm and easy to heat , a space heater or The Propane heater can run you out .lol
Nissan Titan XD with a fuel transfer tank is the best 1/2 ton tow rig on the market. That's what I did to relive the small tank for long tows. Thanks for giving the most under rated truck on the market a shout out!
Did you put an in bed transfer flow tank in or replace your tank down below with a bigger one? I would buy a Nissan if they made one for down below.. I can’t find one…
I have a Ram with the 3:92 axles and the larger fuel tank. I tow a camper similar in size to yours, and also a flatbed car hauler with a Jeep onboard. I do use a weight distribution hitch for both. The Ram has done very well towing both. My Ram does not have the air ride, but i have seen many reviews of that suspension setup. I think that with the air suspension, it can squat for initial hook up as well as it keeps the truck level, it elevates the Ram above the others for ride both loaded and unloaded. As of 2022, the towing chart for Ram shows a 4100 pound axle rating for Ram 1500 truck. I have been pleased with my 2019. I have 75 k on my truck with nearly 35 k of those miles towing. Enjoyed the video, and would love to upgrade to an Airstream.
I had ram 1500 with air suspension and 3.92 rear end loved it, could lower truck when loading stuff in back, towed a 10,000 pound camper with no issues, air suspension always kept truck level
Great comparisons. I am quite happy with my 2021 Tundra and it’s 38 gallon fuel tank while towing our Arctic Fox 22G rv trailer. One thing I wish you would review is the brake controller in the Tundras. I get little support from either the Toyota service department or the RV service folks other than I need to adjust the controller properly…whatever that means!
@KedRevs - which Airstream do you have, I forgot (I think you have shared before). I have a 2020 CM 4x4 Limited and love how it towes my 5500lbs camper but we have been looking at an Air Stream Flying Cloud and wonder how different towing that will be. FYI - I love my Tundra!
I have a 23' Airstream Safari 6000 lbs GVWR, typically loaded to about 5500-5700 lbs when we Travel, but towed a Lance 2375 with a GVWR of 7200 no problem across the country several times. Anything up to the '28 Airstream shouldn't be a problem.

Rear axle weight rating on a half ton is important. But there are more things that, in my opinion are equally important. Wheelbase, number of lead springs, aftermarket improved sway bars, shocks are all part of the equation and equally important. Not to mention engine, transmission and rear axle ratio (can’t forget the obvious) lol.
I'm a Ram guy, but the Nissan Titan is intriguing to me. Especially the XD model. Unfortunately they are killing it so it makes me worry about long term serviceability. But that towing and payload 👍🏻💪🏻
My local dealership, who i do trust, has told me that serviceability will not be an issue. It cannot be. One can still find parts for nearly everyhting old. Keep in mind that Titan has a 5 year/100,000 mile bumper to bumper. I have a fifth wheel that i pull with my XD Pro4x Gas and it does amazing. The stability is great, power is more than adaquate. My father in law, and brother in law both had the silverado 1500 with 6.2l, and in two summers, both had catastrophic engine failure, at less than 30,000 miles. Pistons went right through the engine block. They were both told that they would not be able to get an engine for about 10 months. ANYWAY, they both decided on Titan XD, and are blown away how good they are. They had previously never gave the titan the time of day, and are not in love with them. The brake rotor sizes, are huge, the frame is crazy bulky, suspension is great (though stiff when not towing). The payload on mine, accourding to the door sticker is 2387lbs. Thats pretty crazy good.
Excellent points (again). For me, while a larger fuel tank would be nice, it is not a game changer since I carry about 14 gallons of extra gas that is easily added (bringing me to 40 + gallons). I also have a storage pod for my generator and lithium power station in my trailer, so bed height would not be an issue, but it is not anyway with my tall aerodynamic shell which also improves my mpg. For me, the rear axle carrying weight is important, as is reliability even more so. This is where I question the new Tundra and likely will stay with my extremely reliable gen 2 Tundra
Are you talking about the titan xd? How do you carry the 14 gallon fuel? I am thinking about the XD and to alleviate fuel issue, I would also think about getting an external portable fuel tank that I would use to fill up but would have to stop at rest stops etc.
How have you augmented your suspension on the 18 Tundra to help with hitch droop? I see you have a wd hitch. But what else do you recommend to heavy towing? Thanks
I have a Rear Sway Bar, and Firestoe Ride Rite Air bags in addition to the WDH. I think the WDH is most important, then the Ride Rite's. The rear sway bar on the truck is just because the tundra has a lot of body roll.
I have towed over 100 TT’s and have used all the trucks including your Tundra; my favorite towing experience is Turbo; When have you heard of a Diesel Turbo fail? Truth is you don’t! I hear a lot more naturally aspirated V8 fail then I do Boost. In high elevation Turbo is your best friend! And I tow just as heavy as you with my 2nd truck being a Turbo is not always boosting. Love the low end torque of the Turbo which makes it smooth and flawless on grades while the V8 is asking for lower gears for torque over 4000 RPM’s
We picked up the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 3.0 DuraMax Diesel, crew cab with short bed and with the Max Trailering Package. We currently have a 22 ft travel trailer with GVWR of 5500 lbs. we will eventually upgrade to a bigger trailer but wanted to see your opinion on how much bigger/heavier can I go? With the Rear GAWR bumped up to 4150 lbs and Convetional TWR of 13,100… in your option, what should be the max weight of my next trailer?
The increased cooling and GRAWR are huge benefits. Still, for personal reasons and knowlege of physics, I wouldn't want a Travel Trailer behind my half ton greater than about 8,500 to 9,000lbs under any circumstances.
I’m eyeing the Titan XD for its towing capacity. I saw a comment where they added a spare tank on the titan XD. My last question is, since I only tow my camper a few times a year, would a set of overload springs do the trick. I really want to keep my Tundra, new trucks have doubled in price since I bought my tundra in December 2015, thanks

I added airlift airbags and this trip lowered the equalizer bracket to take some tension off, then put 55 pounds of air in the bags, helped a lot. Before 45-50 mph and bumping roads were just too unstable. Now much better, not perfect but better. Had some smooth roads and got up to 60, that is probably too fast pulling a 30 foot camper anyway, lol
I have a 2016 tundra that I love, but struggling with towing my Jayco 263 RBS. It’s within the towing capacity but I’m concerned my cargo capacity is too light. I have a camper shell (fiberglass) and a bedslide which probably adds several hundred pounds that kill some of my cargo capacity. I use a top of the line equalizer hitch, but rough roads, construction zones, back roads, it just seems squirrelly. The tongue weight of the trailer is around 700 pounds. Do you think if I removed my bedslide, probably 100 plus pounds, it would help? I just installed airlift 5,000 airbags to give it a little support. Any suggestions so I can keep my favorite truck, lol
Man, it's hard without seeing the setup, but I would go through the CAT scale with the truck hitched, and then unhitched to see if you are returning enough weight to the front tires.

Does anyone have information on getting the trans cooler added to a ‘20 Tundra? Will Toyota do it… or go to a 4wd shop? Also… by adding it… does the truck’s computer have to be reprogrammed?

I have an old ‘02 f150 that I tow a small boat with… but I retire this year in June and we just had our first grandchild born in Denver ( we live in PA)… so we plan on getting a TT about 23 -25 feet 6-7000lbs gvw… this will be a new adventure ( traveling cross country with camper) … going to get a used with low mileage 20 or 21 Tundra… and will add the cooler, larger gas tank if not the bigger toyota… will get a 46 gallon one from transfer flow, airbags, tow mirrors etc… YOUR VIDEOS HAVE REALLY HELPED ME THINK THROUGH ALL I NEED TO DO!!!! Thank you so much… I may here and there have a short question like my oil viscosity one I also just sent… just like to hear opinions from people like you who have been living it. One idea of a video… when you are traveling ( like when you went cross country quickly to sell your bigger Lance tt) and you stayed at places just for the night… where do you stay? Do you need to reserve campsites, stay in wal mart parking lots 😊…. Just some pointers on how to do that quick travel on your way to a destination would be great! My point was that anything you add to your truck, counts against payload. Thank you for the video. Talking points were well summed up. The Titan XD is a great machine, and i don't deny that it should hold more fuel. I guess a positive to a smaller tank, is that it gives me the illusion that i am not spending as much on fuel. HAHA A bigger tank would cost me more, at each fill.
Yeah , I second that . I just like the Ram looks best and Ram seems to tow best for me and I've tried them all over the past 30 years . I did have a Ford regular cab 4x4 in 2017 but my friend kept after me to sale it to him and he offered me 4 k about what I paid so I let him have it, I only kept is 40 days lol . I got a new Ram when I sold that Ford , the step side Chevrolet silverado 1500 was ok with the 4.8 engine... I 've been buying Rams sense 1987 and I trade every 3 years on my birthday 🎂 I'm 63 now and I got my Ram 1500 in 2020 and I haven't traded it yet because I've waiting to see how the new In line 6 engine Ram just came out with . My Jayco is single axle just around 3k Dry and I bought it new in 2020 the same day I got this Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi .I live off grid tax free the 4 years in my camper .
I think it’s a large part, trying to reduce the weight of the vehicles relative to achieving your EPA numbers. I think the other part is the Payload wars, reduced fluid weight Equals increased payload
You said you like to keep up with traffic when you tow, trailer tires are not rated to tow 75 to 80 mph. When you tow, take your time, slower is faster. I max at 70 with my drw ram diesel when I’m towing my horses.
GM Duramax has to have the belt changed at 200,000 miles at $2500. No thanks! I have the Ecodiesel and got 19mpg towing, 32 mpg at 60, and 26 around town.
I totally agree with your assessment when it comes to 1/2 pickup trucks, but I would still put the current Titan above the current Tundra. The GM/Chevy twin with 3.0L diesel is probably one of the best option, but they have two big issues that makes me not consider buying it. They have really bad seats and long drives are impossible, and the second issue that I cannot go around is the waxed frame. The F150 is probably tie with the GM/Chevy twin. It has great ergonomics and options, but because of prior bad experience with Fords, I had three, I promised that I would never buy a Ford again. The RAM 1500 is an amazing truck too, but their dealers and their corporate culture sucks. So no bueno too. The new Tundra is the biggest disappointment - I am a big Toyota fan. So absolutely this is the worst new pickup truck. The Titan is okay, but it will most likely be discontinued. So to me, if I was in the market for a new 1/2 ton truck. I would not buy any of them.

I’m keeping my 19’ Tundra till the wheels fall off!. As far as towing goes, i have a 16 foot cargo trailer for ATV’s and an 18 foot camper on occasion. Both tow perfectly. We all know the 2nd gen Tundras’ are the worst in MPG, But in the shop for recalls and repairs the least. I don’t trust those turbo’s for the long haul.. Ford or Toyota. Never was a huge fan of Ram or Nissan (I’ve had both) … long live the 5.7V8. 👍

Change every 5K at maximum..i also live in Pennsylvania… it gets cold here so 0W-20 synthetic, I’ve heard others switching to 5W-30 in warmer climates.. any thoughts on that?

TITAN fuel tanks (the names are coincidental) produces a 50-gallon tank to replace the original one in the Titan@@Danny-tk3rs

I have the 3.0 duramax with the 6 foot 9” bed. Love it. Wish I had a 30-35 gallon fuel tank. Front seat is so uncomfortable.

For my curtains, and even just won’t suffice. I think they have a roll, but it’s not in trucks that tow and haul.

Toyota definitely won't do it. Several aftermarkets produced with online demos of DIYs

I have an old ‘02 f150 that I tow a small boat with… but I retire this year in June and we just had our first grandchild born in Denver ( we live in PA)… so we plan on getting a TT about 23 -25 feet 6-7000lbs gvw… this will be a new adventure ( traveling cross country with camper) … going to get a used with low mileage 20 or 21 Tundra… and will add the cooler, larger gas tank if not the bigger toyota… will get a 46 gallon one from transfer flow, airbags, tow mirrors etc… YOUR VIDEOS HAVE REALLY HELPED ME THINK THROUGH ALL I NEED TO DO!!!! Thank you so much… I may here and there have a short question like my oil viscosity one I also just sent… just like to hear opinions from people like you who have been living it. One idea of a video… when you are traveling ( like when you went cross country quickly to sell your bigger Lance tt) and you stayed at places just for the night… where do you stay? Do you need to reserve campsites, stay in wal mart parking lots 😊…. Just some pointers on how to do that quick travel on your way to a destination would be great! Got the 38gallon tundra 2wd. Tows at 11mpg roughly. Paid $32k for a 2020 sr5 with 50k miles

One thing to keep in mind, is that the bigger the tank you have on the truck, the less the available payload.
Or another thing to keep in mind, You don’t have to top off a bigger tank, but a smaller tank can never hold more.
@@kedrevs4037 i guess... but i one is not goin to fill the bigger tank... kind of makes the topic of "lack of fuel quantity... a moot point to discuss. My point was that anything you add to your truck, counts against payload.
Thank you for the video. Talking points were well summed up. The Titan XD is a great machine, and i don't deny that it should hold more fuel. I guess a positive to a smaller tank, is that it gives me the illusion that i am not spending as much on fuel. HAHA A bigger tank would cost me more, at each fill.

Yeah , I second that . I just like the Ram looks best and Ram seems to tow best for me and I've tried them all over the past 30 years . I did have a Ford regular cab 4x4 in 2017 but my friend kept after me to sale it to him and he offered me 4 k about what I paid so I let him have it, I only kept is 40 days lol . I got a new Ram when I sold that Ford , the step side Chevrolet silverado 1500 was ok with the 4.8 engine... I 've been buying Rams sense 1987 and I trade every 3 years on my birthday 🎂 I'm 63 now and I got my Ram 1500 in 2020 and I haven't traded it yet because I've waiting to see how the new In line 6 engine Ram just came out with . My Jayco is single axle just around 3k Dry and I bought it new in 2020 the same day I got this Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi .I live off grid tax free the 4 years in my camper .

We think a lot alike. It baffles me that they put a gas tank less than 30 gallons in these trucks.
I think it’s a large part, trying to reduce the weight of the vehicles relative to achieving your EPA numbers. I think the other part is the Payload wars, reduced fluid weight Equals increased payload
You said you like to keep up with traffic when you tow, trailer tires are not rated to tow 75 to 80 mph. When you tow, take your time, slower is faster. I max at 70 with my drw ram diesel when I’m towing my horses.
I assure you that 15" Goodyear Endurance tires on my trailer are rated to 87 mph. But I never travel that fast.

GM Duramax has to have the belt changed at 200,000 miles at $2500. No thanks! I have the Ecodiesel and got 19mpg towing, 32 mpg at 60, and 26 around town.
The earlier (2014ish) ecodiesel had some real issues, but by the time Ram killed them, they were really good

I totally agree with your assessment when it comes to 1/2 pickup trucks, but I would still put the current Titan above the current Tundra.
The GM/Chevy twin with 3.0L diesel is probably one of the best option, but they have two big issues that makes me not consider buying it. They have really bad seats and long drives are impossible, and the second issue that I cannot go around is the waxed frame.
The F150 is probably tie with the GM/Chevy twin. It has great ergonomics and options, but because of prior bad experience with Fords, I had three, I promised that I would never buy a Ford again.
The RAM 1500 is an amazing truck too, but their dealers and their corporate culture sucks. So no bueno too.
The new Tundra is the biggest disappointment - I am a big Toyota fan. So absolutely this is the worst new pickup truck.
The Titan is okay, but it will most likely be discontinued.
So to me, if I was in the market for a new 1/2 ton truck. I would not buy any of them.
A used 2nd gen Tundra would be the answer
@@kedrevs4037 I agree, the 2nd gen Tundra is the best 1/2 ton truck, but people want new tech, massage seats, all the comfort that they can get in a truck. Then use it as a daily driver and complain that trucks now are north of $60k - 100k.

I’m keeping my 19’ Tundra till the wheels fall off!. As far as towing goes, i have a 16 foot cargo trailer for ATV’s and an 18 foot camper on occasion. Both tow perfectly. We all know the 2nd gen Tundras’ are the worst in MPG, But in the shop for recalls and repairs the least. I don’t trust those turbo’s for the long haul.. Ford or Toyota. Never was a huge fan of Ram or Nissan (I’ve had both) … long live the 5.7V8. 👍

@@kedrevs4037 not to sound “anal” but i check my oil constantly, its always clean and always to the top hole on the dipstick. Change every 5K at maximum..i also live in Pennsylvania… it gets cold here so 0W-20 synthetic, I’ve heard others switching to 5W-30 in warmer climates.. any thoughts on that?
I live in PA also… but was wondering if the 5w-30 is better for towing than 0w-20?
