Opening Day River Finn 2016 Atlantic Salmon River Ireland

Opening day on the famous salmon river, The River Finn at Glenmore, Ballybofey, Co Donegal, Ireland. Opening ceremony and toast to the river. While other rivers build their reputations on either their spring salmon run or their summer grilse run, the Finn is almost unique in hosting a steady run of fish from opening day on March 1st until well after the last day of the season on September 15th. When water conditions are just right on this spate river it has to be probably the most prolific fly water in Ireland for salmon.
This spate salmon river runs east through central Donegal from the Blue Stack Mountains, joining the tidal River Foyle at the border town of Lifford.
Bad weather and high water spoil this year's opening day but the anglers look towards the rest of the season.

Great movie. A little bit more productive than my 'River Tyne Opening day 2017' Take a look at that if you get a chance! At least you ended up in the pub! I'd love to get over to fish the Finn. Can you just book fishing via day ticket here or is this private/club water? I'd be bringing my other half over so where would you recommend staying? Looks a stunning river.cheers.

Great movie!
I'm going to be in Ireland for 3 days but only have a #6 rod. I it possible to fish for salmon with this? and where would you go. We arrive in Dublin.

Hi Tom, for most rivers you could use a 6wt although something heavier would be recommended. If you email me at [e-mail] I could put you in contact with some people. You will probably need to head to the west if it is Dublin or south.
