  • With wildlife photography, they often say that size does matter. So, how does a 70-200mm Canon rf lens hold up with wildlife photography in Africa?

      Hi @BrendanvanSon what would you recommend between the 200-600 or the 70-200 f2.8 gm oss II with 2x teleconverter on aps-c sonya6700 ??

    I love that no matter what photography question you have, camera, lens, accessories or whatever, there is always some legend who has made a vid answering that question. Cheers.

    The tree and the elephant and the final bird sunset photos are wonderful. Lovely work.

    haha absolutely fantastic! :) Such an epic journey! Greg is still talking about that sun creaming, a true bonding moment :p The wildlife encounters are pure magic and worth the journey alone.

    Great video really makes me want to go on a safari trip. yeah i could definitely see the 70-200 being better for backup or second camera for the close stuff. you definitely need more reach for a trip like that. would love to take that trip with my 100-500

    Hi Branda, very cool pictures. I am myself shooter larger framming to give more life to my pictures. Following your video, I've got a few questions. Most of your pictures shown in this video are within the range a 100-400/400 covers. So was the extra 70-100 range allowed by the 70-200 usefull? Did you cropped these ones so at the end they were shootable with a 100-400/500? And last but not least, do you think that you had a significant advantage of 2.8 aperture for your daylight pictures once again compared with the same pictures shoot with a 100-400/500wide open? Thx for your great job and your feedbacks.

    More than anything technical: that is an utterly amazing place! It looks like, whatever lens you pick, you’ll miss something. In addition, at least one of your shots shows the heat wave degradation you get with longer lenses on hot days.

    Thanks for this video. I was lucky enough to get to Rwanda last year and go on a trek to see the gorillas. In that setting in the rainforest and in close quarters, I was grateful to have the 70-200 f2.8. The 100-500 L would have been too slow and too close/tight in a lot of scenarios.

    HI, I'd like to ask a question regarding lens. Can you have 85mm angle with the lens? because I can only have 84mm or 86mm. This is the first time that I bought zoom lens so I don't know this is normal or malfunction of lens.

  • @montanaylago
    @montanaylago Před rokem

    It’s kinda fun! I remember the time when your longest lens was a 70-200… now is not sufficient!!!
    I feel you brother, now I’m trying some birding and my 100-400 is not enough!!!
    Hopefully the lens goddess will bring me a 600 soon… I’ll just keep dreaming!

    What a beautiful soul you are, Brendan, to lend that lens to Greg and settle for a bit less! You mentioned cropping--how do you feel about cropping and Gigapixeling?

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  Před rokem +1

      Haha. I'm nice right. Cropping is fine if you have the mp for it. I think gigapixeling can be really cool in the right situation

    I sold my 100-400 L about two years ago when I switched to the Canon EOS R (I now have a R6), I do miss my 100-400 L. I did pick up the RF 100-400 on sale and it's okay, but just seems to be missing a little that the L lenses have. Miss your videos!

      @satyayoga Před 5 měsíci

      I had an EF 100-400 L when I shot on a 5D Mk2. When I switched to an R6, I got the RF 100-500 L and it has been a great lens. Took it to Tanzania and got tons of great stuff.

    Did you use the 600mm when you shot closeups of the elephant hide? Too long. On previous trip.

  • @MarkAlderson
    @MarkAlderson Před rokem

    I just returned a rented Canon RF 800mm and I found it too long for some things. I would like to get the RF 100-500mm, but it is pretty expensive.

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  Před rokem

      The rf 100-500 is a really nice piece of kit. I just wish it was a bit faster, to be honest. It works in Namibia (and probably most safari situations), but I like to shoot wide open so much, and I missed f/4.

    @sophietucker1255 Před rokem

    Nice challenge but realistically I try and match my challenge to what is possible for the area I’m at. So no 600mm when shooting landscape and no 70-200 for wildlife that is generally in the distance. Still that being the case the 70-200 makes you look at the environment more than just that killer head shot that could have been taken at the zoo.

  • @johnfranzenphotography

    P.S. @gregsnell needs to clean that spot off his sensor in the B-roll

  • @MeAMuse
    @MeAMuse Před rokem

    If I were going I think I would probably take 2 bodies. My 100-400mm, and I would rent/get a 400mm F2.8 (ideally with an integrated 1.4x tele). If I could only take one tele lens... I would be tempted by a 200-600 and then maybe take a standard zoom. It all comes down to how much you want to pay and carry I guess.

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  Před rokem +1

      For me, the ideal lens on safari is the cabin 200-400mm +1.4x built in. I hope they make an rf version!

    • @MeAMuse
      @MeAMuse Před rokem

      @@BrendanvanSon ooh that sounds amazing! Sadly I am Sony so miss out on those kind of lenses (I feel we miss out on any fast tele zooms, or anything with a built in tele). We can hope though! It may be something that actually gets me to purchase a $14K lens. Question though. You have two cameras…. And you have to choose 2 lenses to take out there (you don’t want to change lenses because the dirt etc). What are your top 2 options?

    Nice images, of course. I will forever associate the music in the first half of the video with Thomas Heaton. Up until a couple of years ago, he used it extensively on his videos. Understandably, it's a catchy tune. Looks like you may be catching up to real time. OR, you've scrambled the order enough to make me think so. ☮ Rock on! 👍🥂

    There will image for all focal lengths. If you restrict yourself, you will be forced to work within that constraint.... maybe you invent a bit more creativity in that focal length ...
