I was at this game and the relief at winning the game was unbelievable.
I honestly thought Luton had us until Sheedy waved his magic wand and scored from the free-kick.

My my, 33 years ago. Was there with my Dad. Roof came off when Mountfield got the winner. Imagine that team on a modern pitch.

Luton should have been out of sight before then

Was at the game and to this day we were lucky, Luton played well and Southall earned us that win.

Ricky Hill - he was a terrific midfielder back in the day 👍

Steve Foster was also some defender, and could play at international level (3 caps)..He should have been bedded into the England team around a year earlier than he was..(1981)..He was ruthless in the tackle, good in the air with some pace, read the game very well and his distribution solid..

That team is one of the best I've seen along with Liverpool 1988, Man Utd 1999, Chelsea 2010 and Barcelona 2011-15

Thanks David - high praise indeed being compared to that Barcelona side! I felt the side that was most like that Everton team was the Utd treble team. Didn't know when it was beaten. Plenty of top class players. If we could have had a bigger squad and more subs like Utd in 99 we would have got our own treble. We had already beaten utd twice that season 5 0 at Goodison that should have been 9.

Apart from my own club MCFC, this was my favourite team of title winners in the last 40 years. This 1985 Everton team was magnificent. They would have had a right go at the European cup the following season, and we all know why they were denied that don’t we? Derek Mountfield, a brilliant CH, very underrated, didn’t he score around 15 goals from CH that season? Pity you couldn’t complete the double against the rags in the final.

I was there and in 1986. We were second best in both, but won and then lost both finals!

Felt so sorry for John Bailey - not sure Psycho gave us anything extra and there was no bigger blue than Bailey. Kendall felt Van den Hauwe was the better defender. As for this game, Luton were beaten once we equalized.

Probably the worst game we played all season and we still won! Oh, and Luton’s goal should have been disallowed for a foul on Stevens.

In what way were Luton robbed? They were the better side for large parts but failed to take their chances and teams who do this get punished and that's what ended up happening to them.

Let's be honest, the quality of football in those days was pretty poor. Lots of long balls hoofed up by the goalies, etc., head tennis, and effort, but not much passing on the floor. Mind you, the pitches were awful. I wonder how that team would fair against today's Everton. There is no doubt some of those players back then would be straight in to today's team.

Disgraceful racist abuse by Evertonians when Stein conceded the free kick, but expected from them.
